I have fluid filmed since new, once a year. I drive anytime the weather hits and all winter long. Three salty winters now. Control arms and every other part of the vehicle underneath looks like it just came off the boat.

Will this type wrench work on a 2018 Off Road, or do I need one with the slots in the side (like the Motivx)?

I can’t even begin to tell you if it will or won’t. I imagine if it fits over the housing with no play and goes up it far enough it’ll work.

I’m also a firm believer in the right tool for the job and have two of the filter wrenches. One in the tool box and one in the vehicle with me.

4x4Runner, you didn't say which wrenches you have. AST, Motivx, other...? Do you recall if they have slots like these:

Here are the two I have. The matco one I had to drill out to accommodate a 3/8” extension. Helps to get the drain plug off if it’s over torqued.

PTR43-00079 TRD Oil Filter is on national back order. As of last week, there were 364 on backorder nationally and still no ETA.

That's the same one my dealership sold me. Haven't used it yet, waiting for the temperatures to come down before I do my first oil change.

I'm hopefully going to get to my first oil change this week. Dealer wants $106 to do it now that the free ones are done.

Watched a few videos and ended up ordering the aluminum Toyota OEM filter housing to replace the plastic one, and ordered a very nice filter wrench that is 100% American made and very nice for $25.

Those filter tools have shitty torque and tend to frustrate.

The thing that is pictured. Torque causes rotation of the filter when you supply the push and the ability to rotate it depends on where that force is applied. Door knobs are always on the opposite side of the hinge right?

So, you're saying that the oil filter wrench is not designed properly because the point of which the force is applied is centered and not offset??

Sort of. It is indeed offset by the socket opening (half) width. I am saying it is just not a very big amount. Very often that tool will not turn a very tight filter. That said, the tool is very convenient if you can turn it because some places the strap is very tight for space.

I use WIX. I haven't had any trouble with them. If you can't get OEM, this is a good option.

Just keep an eye on your skid plates after they change your oil.

My last "free" oil change they stripped two of the forward skid plate bolts and left the oil drain access plate off the aft skid plate.

I drove 25 miles back to dealership to get the plate they left off and the genius cross threaded the two bolts that hold that plate on.

Not trying to be a Debbie downer, just sharing my personal experience as a heads up.

While my Runner was in for a new engine harness, they changed my oil. No damage but I got chocolate rain the next time I changed my oil. That's a broken off piece of the drain housing tool.

I've changed twice since I got mine, and I use the Wix option. Engine doesn't seem to mind.

I ordered 3 from that guy on ebay, but they never shipped. Typical ebay, they advertised in stock, but they didn't have any, so I had to get refunded. I got 1 from Amazon for $24. The box smells like moth balls, but its totally sealed in plastic wrap, so it must have been sitting around a long time. I have 5 on back order with my dealer for $14 each from a July 4th sale.

Was going to change my oil today, finally, but the upgraded aluminum filter housing is in Post Office jail. Ordered it from Amazon on August 7th and it showed up yesterday. I went to go get it from my PO box, but there was a slip instead saying to go to the counter. Counter was closed. Maybe I'll get to it tomorrow...

And, for those wondering about the filter wrenches with the slots, the slots are designed to fit over the "ears" on the housing. Some people have been breaking off the ears on the plastic housing due to them being over-tightened. Motiv eliminated the slots to prevent damage to the ears and increased the tolerances so the slots aren't needed.

Just got done changing the oil. Was more of a pain than it should have been. The next one will be easier.

Good thing I upgraded my oil filter wrench, because the dealer monkeys tightened the plastic housing down so hard that I had to use a breaker bar on my wrench to get it off. But, at least none of the skid plate bolts were stripped or over tightened.

Upgraded to the new Toyota aluminum housing...

    IMG_20210823_120434667.jpg

You have to remove the filter screen from your old housing and install it on the new one since the filter is a bit taller for the 4Runner rather than the Camry.

Yes. Replaced mine two weeks ago at 5K oil change. No special reason as dealers won't be doing my oil changes anyway. But I'll take metal over plastic for engine parts any day.

Threads were perfectly machined and it fitted smoothly by hand before tightening.

Nope. You still use the 4Runner filter. You just have to swap out the shorter screen in the metal housing for the longer one in the plastic housing, then you can use the 4Runner filter.
