Roof Rack

We have a 2014 4Runner, and we're going to be doing our first camping roadtrip the end of December and with that, we would like a good quality roof rack. We've looked at the Gobi however, it appeared to be a little pricey. Does anyone else have any good recommendations?

I had looked at these as well... but when I found this in their description I changed my mind...

"The RPMFAB rack has laser cut side rails constructed of 1/4" 5052 aluminum plate. These rails have 3 mounting tabs per side that will allow you to bolt the rack into the 2 factory mounting locations and one nutzert (REQUIRES DRILLING) on each side of the roof for the front non factory mount."

--after having another look... it looks like they have a "no drill" option as well.

 

LFD Off Road makes strong replacement cross bars for the factory rails. Add as many as you like. If you decide you need more capacity, you can upgrade to their longer racks and then keep the bars you already bought.

I think this is the best system for those who are unsure of what they're looking for in a rack. Low introductory cost with room to upgrade later, without spending money twice.

 

Excellent alternative... even for their full roof rack.

Rago makes crossbars also but doesn't have the longer rail or rack option LFD does.

Rhino rack. Lightweight most add on options and 700 lb static capacity. No drilling.

 

Right now its on sale for 870. the quarter rail on the rear is an add.

There is a non drill option as well. I installed mine this weekend and it is awesome. Absolutely love it. It was pretty easy to install and only needed help lifting it from the ground to mounting on the vehicle. Would highly recommend.

Any comments on wind noise or mpg loss with the racks pictured?

 

There is no noise from my rack, however there is some whistling from my LED bar. I'm in the process of changing that, however.

 

I really like my Baja Racks Flat Utility Rack with cross bars (not the mesh). It sits very low without the cage or a front bar sticking up. If I'd bought a taller basket rack it would not have fit in my garage once I installed the lift. Because it's flat with no cage or front bar it's very easy to load on a canoe, lumber and other long gear. You still have to tie things down, like you would with any rack and it's easy with the cross bars.
I had mine custom made to eliminate the rear cut-out loop for the shark fin antenna and it fit very close without touching. It's easier to load lumber that way. I often have house projects on this old house that require bringing lumber home. I once had 7 sheets of 1/2" plywood on top (~280#).

From the reviews I have read from people that have one, yeah it's fine. I don't think there is a bad ladder as they are all basically the same.

 

Baja Racks ladder. Yes, it's close and I adjusted the position to clear by about 1/4". Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

 

I fond another photo of the Baja Racks roof rack that shows the cross bars (no mesh floor). You can also see the wind fairing that sits below the top of the rack, so there's no interference with long loads. This is before I installed the ladder.

I just installed the Rhino Rack Pioneer on my 2014 Limited. I was just wondering if there was anyway to seal the area where the backbone attaches to where the factory rails use to be? It seems a little bare compared to the rubber sealing and cover plate of the factory rails. Where I live it rains a lot.

 

I never thought I would need a roof rack, but find myself in the gulf coast these days. in the event that I'm ordered to "bug out" i need to grab my two 90 lb GSD's and roll out. Of course Gobi was the first option i looked at, but is way over kill for my needs. I just need something that I can mount up quick load up a few essentials, some bags, tent, collapsed dog kennels and maybe a fuel can or two. Right now I'm looking at:

This is a concern of mine with most racks, maybe getting the factory rack delete kit and working it into the mounting process.

 

Will work great and not cost a lot if that is what you need. As it sits, without the crossbars, it's completely useless IMO. For the price of the cross bars you at least have another useful way to carry things if needed.

I don't know what you mean by "sealing" but those rubber rails/cover plates are not water proof and the 4 uses that area to channel water off the vehicle. You do not want to hamper that water from flowing through those channels. As long as the holes where the rack mounts are sealed correctly and allow water to flow around them, it should be fine.
