Adding Garage Door Buttons

I have most of my wiring done for dual garage door buttons. I am just waiting for a low profile add-a-fuse to tap an ACC circuit so they light up when the power is on. I will be placing these in two spots to the left of the steering wheel.

Very nice. I've been thinking on how to do that but to have it set up to work only with ignition on ( so if it's parked in driveway no one can break in and hit the opener to access the house). Haven't been real successful since the openers aren't 12v.

What do you use the 3 buttons on your overhead console for?

 

How are you going to install the switches in the knock out holes, since you seem to have already attached the opener to them which is too big for the switch holes?

 

could be wrong but i think the wires unplug from the back of the switches

Thought the same thing you do not have the three buttons up near your eyeglass holder? If you do they can be programmed to open garage doors, turn on lights, etc. Obviously as long as the light has the two way capability that the opener does.

 

You could accomplish that with a relay. Good idea.

 

They do unplug from the rear.

 

No, I am a base level kind of guy.....with weird upgrades and sometimes funny smells. My mother is the fancy Limited one in the family.

 

All non Premium, SR5 and Off Road (Trail) did not have this feature. I taped my receiver inside the small STORAGE hole next to the USB & 12v power. It truly boggles my mind what creature comforts Toyota took out of the Gen4 to make the Gen5. Gen5 looks awesome but tech and comfort not so much.

 

This was a surprise but I went with this to turn my dumb door into a smart one and now no need for wiring or to have the garage clicker in the vehicle.

I did this a bit ago on mine. Super day and very handy. I did not connect the switch such that it lights up though. What are you connecting it to and what size relay is required? Thanks!!

 

All I did was ground the ground wire and used an add-a-fuse to the fuse box for the yellow illumination wire. I used an accessory line so it lights up with the ignition and is on any time the truck is on. I have them placed next to my left knee so they are in a dark spot even during the day.

 

Hell, what i need is how to repurpose the three homelink buttons. Nice set-up, guessing you didn't have the bum warmers.

 

My goal is to keep my house as dumb as possible for as long as possible.

I have three Homelink Wireless buttons, drives me bonkers for un-useful buttons since I don't have a garage. The problem, I think, is that the HomeLink buttons are momentary buttons, not off/on. So have to find a way or device that will keep relay closed until another signal. I've seen a couple of examples like this by Jeepers and large truck/Suburban drivers. Might take some creative wiring/modifying but better than those buttons taunting me.

 

So is the need to wire this into the car simply to illuminate the light on the momentary switch? Watching a couple videos of people just wiring the momentary switch to the circuit board of their openers and it seems like the only downside is no light for the button and you have to be able to replace the coin cell battery on the opener board when it eventually dies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGHI3vgkV8w doesn't seem like any mod like this will actually remove the need for the opener to actually be powered by the coin battery.
Am I missing anything on this?

 

I believe you are correct, wiring it in is simply to have it illuminated.

 

This thread was double necroed lol, and Im glad it was. I keep my opener in the cubby next to the usb and 12v socket, and Im sick of it falling out. Especially when I’m wheelin

Now that I know how to wire a momentary switch to the opener, it just dawned on me and I dont even need this switch! Any old momentary will do. Throw in a switched relay, and Bob’s yer uncle!

Just curious what is the difference of using the home link buttons vs just having the garage door opener fob in the vehicle ? Do people with garages carry the fob with them?

 

Well in my particular instance I have the opener concealed. It's zip tied to the hole in the metal backbone of the steering wheel adjustment lever on the bottom of the wheel, basically just inside / above the plastic surround of the steering column. I don't think a casual thief would look there.

But yes, if you have the opener clipped on the visor there's really no difference in security between that and the Homelink.

 

yeah, no difference. I haven't even programmed my homelink, since my remote is right next to it on the visor. But i admit a button in the dash looks cleaner and fun to build.

you would just need a step down converter/regulator from 12V to 5V DC and an unlabeled momentary switch, i would think. I haven't looked into that much, but seems feasible (sp?). But that's a good idea where you have it on the steering column, which you might want to move it now that you posted the position on the interwebs. LOL.

 

My wife hooked up the Home link in her new 4 Runner , to 2 of our garage bay doors ( we have 3 doors and 4 bays), she likes it..I do not have homelink in my Tacoma (2019) and I keep 2 fobs (on the visors) in my truck..we have a Tahoe with Homelink too (I think that's what it is called). I have no issue with the fobs.

 

In the past, I've wired Genie garage door opener remotes in line with the high beam lights on my vehicle. You flash your brights and activate the remote; door opens or closes. Very stealth.
I suppose if the remote uses a lower voltage then some step down measure has to be taken but this can be a great solution if you don't have anywhere to add buttons. It took me about 10 mins to do this on my Honda S2000.
