2019 4Runner TRD PRO - MPG thoughts

I'm averaging ~15.4 MPGs in my '19 Pro. Typical driving condition is rush-hour traffic as this is my DD. Just passed 700 miles; bone stock.

 

Increasing your highway cruising speed from 55mph (90km/h) to 75mph (120km/h) can raise fuel consumptionas much as 20%. You can improve your gas mileage 10 – 15% by driving at 55mph rather than 65mph (104km/h).

 

another variable is what octane gas the driver is pumping as well, can't beat paying $1.89 for for 89 octane in Houston

 

I live in LA. We're just happy when things are moving at all.

 

Do you live in an area that's flat? I'm on 285/70/17 and I'm averaging 16.3 with a little over 6100 miles. Best tank so far was today when I filled up at 17.3 MPG

Man not sure if mine is ready wrong or I'm just lucky but still averaging 21 according to the read-out. I don't have a lead foot or drive like a "blue hair" either usually set the cruise at 70. Right now it's garaged a lot as it's not my daily driver when it is the MPG will probably come down.

I am averaging about 17.5 but no highway driving for to long of a distance

 

Hi Guys,
Just joined this forum. Bought a 2019 4Runner TRD Pro this past Tuesday evening. I am currently on LESS than a quarter tank and averaging only 14.9MPG after being given the vehicle with a full tank. My vehicle has a roof rack and running boards. From everything Ive read, I should be getting between 17-21. I brought it in yesterday and the sales guy didn't have an answer and said I could leave it with the service department, but I didn't have time. I am kinda freaking out since I drive a lot and have no problem with 17-20, but not 14.9....I bought the vehicle with 3 miles on it....ANy thoughts, recommendations for me? All help is appreciated!!!

 

i have an 18 trd pro. I purchased it in Mississippi and drove home to Texas, I think it was about 10 hours total driving time. I drove like a grandpa that had illegal drugs in the car and got 19-20. I now have 6000 miles on the 4Runner and I get about 17 city/highway. Driving in eco mode is not realistic, this vehicle is way too slow. I’ve gotten use to the bad mpg

 

So you never got 14.9 like Im getting? Do you have a roof rack and running boards?

I would be happy (I expected) with 17-19, but not 14.9...

 

Adjust your driving style.

I think I drive pretty good, and mostly highway...

 

If I drive like I drive a car then that's what I'll see in terms of MPG.

 

Hi Dr I have a new '18 (last September) and mine's been probably 65-70% highway and my dash is reading 20.4 I believe right now. I also have a roof rack and dealer installed running boards but I do not think those two things are the reason. Your mileage does sound low but I'd be willing to bet they say nothing's wrong. Dealers aren't the best unless you bring them the problem on a silver platter they can't investigate to find much. All they seem to want to do is oil changes and $1,000 brake jobs.

 

No, my mpg never dropped that low. I have the stock roof rack which is different from the 19’ roof rack and I do have oem running boards. Try using the eco mode function, it will get your mpg up but it’s not realistic driving like that. Everyone will be passing you and most likely flipping you off for driving too slow.

 

Also, make sure your tire pressure is set correctly. That could help

 

I see the ECO green light periodically pop up then leave. Is there a way to turn it on?

 

I believe the default from factory is turned on, I turned mine off because I found it distracting. It will turn on when you’re in optimal eco mode and turn off when your not. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that’s how it works.

 

Also, if your doing short trips around town that will kill your mpg also, I’ve only noticed great mpg while driving long trips.

My first trip with the vehicle was on a highway and it was registering 14.7-14.9 MPG and I know something was wrong. I will take it to the dealer..ugh

 

My wife gets 14-15 around town and 17-18 on the highway but she drives like a get-away driver sometimes. I am more conservative and get 17-18 in town and 20ish on the highway. These are not the what I would call the pinnacle of efficency. haha! I will verify when I am home and get the manual out, but I think the ECO light is only an indicator that you are driving "environmentally conscientious" on the runners and keeping your foot out of it. Some Toyota models the ECO mode limits things like AC and other things that cause parasitic drag on the engine (large elecrical loads).

 

My wife's 2019 Pro averaged 16.0 mpg on her first tank of gas and 17.3 mpg since. She has >1000 miles to date with 90% of her driving stop and go.

 

On a trip from Los Angeles to Mammoth Lakes and back I averaged 16.8 MPG, all highway driving. That's with 3 people, a baby, two pit bulls, and all of our stuff for a 4 day stay. My truck has 275/70 KO2s (in E-load), sliders, and a full-length steel roof rack loaded with junk.



4Runners get terrible gas mileage, and it's even worse if you don't drive them smoothly. Adjust your driving style. Or don't.

 

WOW, something is definitely wrong here.....I am getting like 14.7 even with a light foot. I have heard that it will improve over time but it seems like nobody had the problems I am having. Hopefully the dealer/service guys can shed some light on this.....I hope I don't have a lemon. Would not have bought this if I knew it was getting UNDER 15 MPG

 

Where are you located? Cold temps and winter gas will make mpg take a hit. When you get some hours on the highway to balance out your city driving, I bet you'll see the mpg gauge get into the 16-17 range.

 

Miami, Florida....Weather has been PERFECT....When I took it to the dealer yesterday (didn't have time to speak to someone in service), one of the sales persons said the roof rack and running boards can affect MPG but I don't buy it; not from 17-20 as advertised all the way down to 14.9

 

Short answer, you don't have a light foot. Drive so that this little green eco light is on at all times. That's a "light foot".



Long answer, no car gets the same mileage as the sticker. The Ford Ranger is in the news right now because, like all Ecoboost engines, they aren't so "eco". Here's an article on Edmunds about it.

Turned my ECO light off, before i left the dealership. Drives me nuts. Wish i could perma remove the little light bar too. I, myself, hate it. But, i dont complain about my 15-17mpg either. I knew this, when i purchased it/looked at 4runners.
Gas milage wise, adding my auto start, was the worse thing i could do lol.... but, i love to have it....
