Snow tires and wheels for a 2018 Limited

I run the grey TuRD Pro wheels with 255/80/17 Ridge Grapplers and Blizzaks on the stock 20” wheels.

 

Do you have a lift or are you stock?

 

I used 275/70/17 and the blizzaks when stock. The 255/80/17s are with a lift but with the 4Runner IFS a lift has no effect on tire clearance.

 

All, First time 4Runner owner. It is time to put some new tires on my 16 4Runner. I want to put bigger/AT tires on it. What do you all recommend. Stock tires on now with 20" rims. I plan to at least level it in the future just not ready to do that. Going to get some new rims as well but haven't found what I am looking for.

So looking for feedback from the group.

The Limited comes stock with 245/60/20. Width is 9 ²¹⁄₃₂". 255/75/17 width is 10 ¹⁄₁₆", so tire is ⁷⁄₃₂" closer to suspension components and will stick out ⁷⁄₃₂" farther. Can't say for sure, but that's less than 1/4-inch difference inside and outside, and it seems like there would be enough room for that. The speedometer will be off by about a mile when driving in the 50-70 mph range because the circumference of the stock tires is 99.1" and for the the 255/75/17 it is 100.7, so the new tire revs 10 less revs per mile. Dealers near me routinely recommend replacing the 20" Limited tires with a 7" wheel and 265/70/17 tires, which increase the width even more. An earlier poster said he did that to his wife's Limited and it rubbed--so I don't know what to make of that. Seems odd that a dealership wouldn't know that by now. Anyway, the 265/70/17 doesn't throw the speedometer off at all, since the circumference is only 0.1" different and the revs only 1 apart.

 

Old Grumpy, you put 265/70/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers on a Limited with the 7" TRD wheel. Does it rub?

 

sfoffroad, thanks for your reply. So do you have any experience with 285/70/r17's nitto ridge graps? The chart show some minor mod as I guess they will rub on the front. I am planning to level the front so not sure if they would help.

Blakendall...I'm assuming you have a 2016 Limited, with 245/60/20s...that will be a big jump in width, from 9.6" to 11.2". What size wheel are you planning to put them on, and, if you have a specific wheel in mind, do you know its offset?

 

Blakendall ... also, that tire is pretty heavy, even in the non-LT version of the 285/70R17 Ridge Grappler, the weight is almost 49 lbs. I really like Nitto tires and the Ridge,according to veryoneI've talked with, is their sweet spot right now. I've tried a 51 Lb LT tire on a Limited and the feared rougher ride seemed nullified by all that extra rubber we get going from the 20-inch to 17-inch.

 

This seems to be a question that never gets once-and-for-all resolved in any forum where I read it being discussed. Here, Grumpy Uncle first sounds like he and his wife are running them without a problem, but later says they rub at full turn. Many participants in various forums say they are using them without a problem, but others, as happened here, claim that you're limited (no pun intended) to replacing the 20-inch tires with 245/75/17s, if you want to be sure they won't rub. Running the numbers on this website's calculator ( ) yields a perfect speedometer match, but doesn't specifically address rubbing at full lock. This website ( ) includes offset and concludes: "Tire will stick out ²⁷⁄₃₂" farther [than the stock 20s do]. Rim will stick out ⁷⁄₁₆" farther. Make sure that you have enough room under the fender." It's funny. So many owners appear to consider and/or make the switch to 265/70/17, you'd think we'd have conclusive evidence, one way or the other,

 

I have seen where some are running 275/55r20 on 5 Gen Limited and have no issues. I want to run 255/75r17 and don't know if they will rub or not, but looking at the offset calculator it might work. I just would like to be 100% sure that they will not rub before paying all that $$$ for new tires that will not work.

 

Would it work to find a tire shop, where you ask them if they are certain that a specific tire won't rub. Then, if they install it and, right there, you turn the vehicle fully, forwards and backwards, left and right, either they were right or they were wrong. If they were wrong, they remove the tires. Does that sound plausible? I know my dealership routinely recommends to Limited owners that, if they want the TRD wheel, the, they should put 265/70/17s on them. I can't imagine they all rub and the customer is simply screwed.

 

I doubt you will find any tire shop that will do that since its not stock. If you can call the dealer and ask them what they do if anything to keep them from rubbing. Maybe they know of a secret that keeps them from rubbing.

 

Well, that certainly would make buying this category of product as difficult and complicated as many of these forums illustrate. I've done part 1, so far, by which I mean I put that question to my dealership's parts dept, a Big O tire shop (where the manager identified one of his employees as "our Toyota guy," and an America's tire store. To be clear, when I asked: "Are you sure these tires won't rub on my Limited?", the dealership parts manager answered "yes"; the Big O guy answered "yes, I'm telling you it's one of the 4Runner's stock tires and the one that fits that TRD wheel"; and the last guy said "we've done it many times; so, yes, I'm certain they will fit without any rubbing." I'm not saying I know they are right. Only that, and here I might be wrong, it seems to me that in any other category of product, if the customer asked such a question and was told, unequivocally, "yes, I'm certain it will work for you," and then it didn't, the customer would have some standing for returning them or not wanting to drive off the property with them rubbing.

 

If I had a place that told me that and would guaranteed 100% money back if they rub then I would go for it.

Well, this weekend, I'll be able to answer that. I've got Continental TerrainContact A/T LT245/75/17s (52.3 lbs) on TRD Pro wheels (7x17), which replaced the OEM Yokohama Geolandar G96B 245/60/20s (that were on the OEM 7.5x20 rims--the 2019 Limited came with 7.5", rather than 7" wide wheels). Continental has a 60-day "exchange for any other Continental or General tire. The local America's Tires store (the brick and mortar part of Discount Tire) has ordered a set of General Grabber AT/X 265/70/R17s (44lbs). Believing that these tires will fit my 2019 Limited, with no rubbing, even at full turn in reverse, they have offered to put their time and energy "where their mouth is," and mount them, this Saturday, and, if they rub, take them off and put my current 245/75/17s back on. So, I'll follow-up Saturday or Sunday.

I will do that. While this discussion (and similar ones I've been part of on other forums) was unfolding, I noticed that many tire stores (online and brick-and-mortar) offer no-questions-asked returns. Since, the reason for this return of 265/70/17s, which end up rubbing the fenders/wheel-wells of 5ht generation Limiteds, would be immediately detectable, I'm wondering why I (and others) have kept angst-ing about the decision and exchanging endless posts ("I did it and it didn't rub" vs some form of "that's impossible" or "I did it and it did rub") rather than just going to a tire store and finding out?

 

With that big a jump in width, I'd consider American Racing's AR931, Size 17x8.5 (27.55 lbs), offset = 15mm (same as OEM 20-inch wheel) -- or Ultra Bolt 17, size 17x8 (25 lbs), offset = 10mm

 

I talked to my tire shop and they are willing test fit tires to make sure they do not rub. So here in 2 weeks I will be going to find out if 255/75r17 or 265/70r17 will rub or not.

So my tire shop tried the General Grabber ATX 265/70/17 and they did rub. Since I’m using Continental’s one free exchange (the Continental I tried weighs over 52 lbs) I can’t keep experimenting and the shop could have restricted me to either a Continental or General 245/75/17 (which only come in LT 49-52 lb range) but kindly offered to get me Falken Wildpeak AT3W in the 245/75/17 size that we know fits and weighs in at 41 lbs.

 

255/75R17 on average will stick out 16 mm (0.6'') farther than stock 245/60/20, if mounted on 7x17 TRD wheel.

 

265/70/17 is usually estimated to stick out 21 mm (0.8'') farther. On my 2019 Limited, that was just enough to rub slightly

Resurrecting an old thread. I have a 2017 LE, bought TRD Pro wheels for my winter tires (Blizzak 265/70/17), and the front passenger tire rubs on full lock in reverse. Nothing that bothers me too much, and I’ll probably take a heat gun to the fender liner when I put them back on for next season.

I was planning to get a second set of TRD Pro rims and mount Cooper AT3s in 265/70/17 size for my summer tires. Having read NUMEROUS discussion threads and after many conversations with various dealers and tire shops, I’m now re-thinking that idea (since the consensus is they’ll rub). Can someone confirm that an AT tire in 245/75/70 mounted on TRD Pro won’t rub? Ideally, I want to mount Cooper Discoverer AT3s, but if there is another tire that won’t rub with the set up, I’m open to it!

 

If I was in your shoes I'd get the 17" TRD rims (they look great and you know they fit and that they're good quality) and put Blizzaks on em. The rims aren't even expensive.
