Thank yo, I was on the fence between a Tacoma and a 4Runner. I thought two of the same Gen might be considered excessive haha.

 

Nah just be in good taste! They both look amazing I just prefer the utility of a truck.

 

Having owned a Gen 3 (2017) Tacoma and a Gen 5 (2018) 4Runner... 4Runner all day everyday. The engine/transmission combo in the Taco drives like shit.

That was the day I said farewell to the Taco and hello 4R.

 

I can appreciate that. It is a little wonky sometimes but I don’t normally tow and only carry a couple hundred pounds of tools in my truck. It was an adjustment coming from my V8 4Runner as a daily to this 3.5 V6 and to be honest I was worried about how it was gonna drive. I did test drive an off road and then put in my “allocation” order, however the month and a half that I waited was nail biting. I started reading threads on how horrible the truck was and almost cancelled a few times. Now that I have driven it daily and the newness has worn off I am still happy with my decision. With that said if I lived in a mountainous area I could feel differently about it. In 2017 we took her 17 4Runner to South Carolina through the mountains and I hated that truck. Always hunting gears, I ended taking it out of overdrive all through the mountains and even at 75 plus highway speeds. Morale of my long winded story...the 4.0 and 3.5 suck compared to the 4.7 haha. My wife claims my taco is faster than her runner..it’s all a matter of perception.

 

My Taco constantly wouldn’t down shift to get into the highway unless you pretty much floored it. I never experienced the Tacoma after the service bulletin in regards to the transmission needing ecu flashed. So I cannot comment on how it is after. But before that my god it was the worst transmission I have ever had in a vehicle. It was a battle on the highway every time. But people claim they fixed it for the most part now, so that is good.

 

I must have received the updated map on mine. As stated earlier I was on the fence between the taco and 4Runner. I would take my wife’s 4Runner over my Tacoma if I had to choose so I agree with your reasoning. Better build quality all the way around just a little outdated.

 

Outdated is an understatement.... shame on Toyota for just leaving the interior pretty much the same for the last 7 years. They could have at least put in an updated hear unit and gauge cluster.

 

No reason to change it when sales keep climbing year in and year out. Old school rules!

Definitely my favorite gen!

 

I have driven my 2016 TP all over the country and it has never "hunted for gears". If you think it is hunting then use the sport mode.

 

2 years & almost 50k miles later I upgraded to a T4R from a Tacoma. Transmission, leaky differential, howling noise, grinding noise, replaced differential, & finally a bad speed sensor got the best of me. I miss my truck but damn the 4Runner drives so much better. Hopefully I have no problems with it’s reliability. On a positive note, Tacoma resale value was phenomenal!
