92 wont smog snifter goes up and down with no pattern

could it be the computer as I have replaced most everything . also trany starts out in third sometimes . help would be greatly appreciated thank in advance

I’m thinking he means it won’t pass the smog test and that the shifter/trans sporadically pics random gears with no consistency

 

Look up shift solenoids maybe?

 

Thanks guys I am still working on this . I took it to my smog friend who told me it is not usual problem. at idle it is clean but goes up with the revs.
also I brought it in without an appointment and it was snifting great but he didnt have time to run me through then when I went back later it was bad again
when it is good and warmed up it may start off in third. what controls the shifting? the ecu? also replaced the trany oil temp sensor but still have the light on at start up and while driving. small miss going on after warm up. the o2 sensor is new and the knock sensor has been bypassed. the ck engine lite wont go on until it is in gear
I will do a compression test next weekend . should I try another ecu? any ideas out there I would appreciate any help

 

Sounds like you need to go through the whole vehicle fixing what has been bypassed or is broken. Not sure why you would bypass a knock sensor and starting off in 3rd is just not good especially if it’s only a 3 speed auto with O/D. I’m surprised it even moves. Miss could be fouled leads or plugs. You may also have a fuel issue. Start from the basics and move forward. (Air, fuel, spark, compression, and timing) Good luck

 

thanks ,I have put plugs ,wires, hoses, dist cap . plugs were ok no oily ones one was alittle black but that wouldnt throw the snifter that much.I will replace the knock sensor and put in a new injector. it starts in third by itself after its been driven . it is erratic thats the problem .it also wont throw a code unless its in gear . sensor is new but says trany oil is hot at start up . does anyone know if the ecu controls .the shifting I will have some time this Saturday to play with it again.
