    Helo all,

I'm curious how long the factory alternator are lasting on your 4Runners. Mine seems to be crapping out after 5 years (I have 2018). How about yours?

Sounds unusual. I’ve had two other Toyota’s, one with almost 300k and the other pushing 200k, both with the original alternator.

Agreed. Still on original alternator my 2003 Tacoma with 200k.

My 07 original crapped out last year at about 200k.
My 18 is still on original 104k.

Definitely not normal. The alternator on my previous 4Runner was original at 257K miles.

Do you do a lot of deep water crossings or mud?

In my experience, replace brushes near 200k miles and you’re good for probably another 200k.

Not the OP, but also maybe(?) having alternator problems.

Is the alternator in a 2021 4Runner a Euro 5/6 aka "smart" alternator, or an old-school fixed-voltage alternator? Inquiring minds want to know...

I'm sorry guys, this is OP. I had issues posting logging in after I moved. But it wasn't an alternator problem, it was the battery. But I did buy the brush for when it really fails. Thank you guys.

As a friendly tip (when you get near 200k miles), find a time at your convenience and replace the brushes. Otherwise, it might fail at its own convenience, such as during a downpour. Then replacing won't be as much fun. :(

Glad you got it figured out!

I learned this week that Honda doesn't give you the option of replacing brushes. My son's GF had her alternator replaced on her Fit. I told her to bring me the old alternator so I could look at the brushes. Nope - can't. If the brushes wear out, your only option is to replace the alternator.
