Not to be Capt. Bring Down , or anything, but, . .. The mpg wont increase in a way that moves the needle because of a "first oil change". Nor break in, or anything else. Do you think after a oil change, hes going to get 25??

Wait till he loads the rig down with some larger tires, some protection, bumpers, winch, camping gear, goes up a canyon incline for 3 hours, against high wind,.. or anything besides just tooling around on a straight, paved road. 16, sounds just right for a 2 and a half ton, 4wd vehicle, with a ton of crap on it. Edit- Dudes gonna get 12, when he actually uses the thing, or drives faster than 50mph on the highway.

My mileage improved after a few thousand miles. :notsure:

I'm sure the actual mileage is going to vary greatly depending on each owner's driving habits. I highly doubt 25 is going to be the norm. But, I'd still bet that the 6th gen will see a slight improvement over the 5th gen.

did yours improve by over 30% after a few k miles? That's the gap between 16 and what Toyota promised as 21mpg combined, 25 on the highway.

Where did I suggest that that would happen?

The post I replied to said that fuel economy would not improve due to break in. I said that mine improved after a few thousand miles.

How much did your mpg improve? I can’t say I’ve ever noticed my mpgs getting better on any vehicle I have owned. It’s usually the opposite.

How many brand new vehicles have you owned?

This was my first, and probably last, brand new vehicle. I don't recall exactly how much it changed. I just recall that it got a little bit better than it was new.

So how much did yours improve after the first few k miles, since you were so eager to offer first hand experience?

    Answered already in post #66.

Sorry if I don't have documentation of the exact fuel economy.

On the new vehicles I owned some got better mpg, some got worse. He has sample size of one but of course no details so clearly he knows more than anyone else.

All I said was that my mileage improved a little bit. I never said that everybody's would, or by how much. So if you're going to criticize, stick to what I actually said.

Again, if you read my comment, all I said was that mine improved. I never said that all vehicles do or will.

Do you also have an issue with the guy who said that the mileage would not improve? What are his credentials I wonder?

Three new vehicles for me. If you can’t remember how much it changed it must not have been too dramatic.

    It was enough to notice.

If you read through some of the older gas mileage threads, you'll see that others also experienced an improvement after a few tanks.

But a few actually saw a decrease. This seemed less common, though.

Given all of the variables that affect fuel economy, it's hard to say how much is actually normal.

Thebassguy is a funny guy (like ha ha funny and amusing as well) since he was in fact arguing with kyblack76 who said pretty much what you said that.
But of course when asked for details Mr. Basspro can't recall the specifics and he never said anything in particular.

Where was I arguing? He said it wouldn't improve. I said that mine did. Obviously it's a different drivetrain, so we don't actually know yet.

Not sure if you caught this, but I actually was quoting him. So, his post was not a reply to anything that I said.

    So,
(I started this Thread) 2025 4runner trd off road premium.
I drove it 1400 miles from TX to MN
I used the fill er up, record mileage, fill er up and do the math method to get my mpg. It should be noted that the dash MPG said I was averaging 18.2 mpg, so that dash reading is worthless.
Using non ethanol added fuel at 87 octane I got 22.5 mpg. I drove 75 - 80 mph on the interstate and frequently passed people who were annoying.
I figure my mpg will improve as the car breaks in.
I can state for a fact that the 10 % corn alcohol blends will cut your mpg by 4mpg.
Once I got home I pulled the back seats because I am a retired widower. The cargo room advantage was amazing. The dang seats weighed about 300lbs. I can only imagine my mpg will increase by 1mpg. They only took 20 min to remove.

I also want to say that soooooo many 4runner people laugh at people who want good mpg. But seriously, 95% of my driving will be non off-road, which is pretty typical for people who own a off-road vehicle.
Actually, 95% is high. That means at 100,000 miles, 5000 were off road. I would say that 98% is probably more accurate.

Glad to hear that it's improving.

Did you pull out the seats just for extra cargo space? Or, are you thinking about doing some car camping?

I pulled the rears out of my '19 to put in a full sleeping platform. The seat bottoms were fairly light, but the seat backs were definitely heavy!

Some people cannot understand the difference between wanting good fuel economy, and wanting the best fuel economy you can reasonably get. When I bought my 2019, I knew what I was in for. But, at times I will adjust my driving habits in order to save a little fuel.

I am in a similar boat. Lots of highway driving, a fair amount of dirt and gravel roads, and very little actual miles of technical off-roading.

Where do you live that you can get ethanol free fuel and is it more expensive?

I live in MN. 10% ethanol blend is very common in the Midwest. It is usually associated with the cheapest gas you can buy. You pay a bit more for non ethanol blend , but you get get better mpg. About 20 cents more a gallon. Its a tricky math problem that depends on what your after. When I’m traveling on vacation I want max miles out of a tank so I always go with non corn alcohol blends.
When I was in Texas I saw no ethanol blends. Go figure, Texas , land of oil.
As I got into Kansas and Oklahoma it was more common at the cheap price.
My mileage went significantly down. So I always purchased non ethanol gas.

Ethanol has about 30% less energy density than gasoline. Comparing 10% ethanol with ethanol free gasoline would give you 0.3 * 0.1 =0.03 or 3% increase. 3% increase from say 20 mpg would bring you up to 20.6 for a 0.6 mpg improvement. It's not going to amount to anywhere near a 4 mpg difference. Ethanol free where I live is priced closer to premium. The math doesn't make sense.
