just bought a 2025 TRD off road premium. I love it. My first 4Runner.
Does this thing need time to break in to get best mpg?
I have been driving it like a baby, mostly hwy so far, in eco mode, and the dash display tells me 16mpg. I can live with that. Just wondering.
I just purchased my TRD off road premium in Corpus Christi Tx for a dealer price of 60,500.
FYI, I could not find the trim I wanted anywhere near where I lived in MN so I flew down to TX to get the red one I purchased

    Damn. 4Banger getting 16mpg?

Edit: Not a lot of 6th Gen owners on this site yet. I'm curious what the actual fuel economy will be

That was probably unloaded, on pavement. Wait for skid plates, winch, sliders, a weeks worth of gear, traveling 1mph on trails in 4wd, on and on.
16 sounds pretty close mate. High to me in fact,....... thats probably street miles. 4runners arent gas sippers with the weight, and being a brick on the road.
    edit-61k for a 4 runner.... sheeeeesh.
But op, if your stoked, ... happy adventures out there mate. Cheers.

    Hi Ron,

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new 4Runner! We all want to see pictures. There are a lot of folks on this board who are, how should I say it, 6th gen skeptics. Most of us haven’t even seen one in person. So you have more experience than most.

Welcome Rob to the forum and Congrats on the purchase. As captain above mentioned, please bare with some of us. It is a good group of people at the end of the day.

To your question...there are no real rules of thumb for breaking-in properly these units. Just drive normal. I was going to suggest you go to Moab on the way up...and then that would be a proper breaking-in, but perhaps not! Enjoy it.

Welcome and congrats on your new rig.
Question arises when you simply state MPG, we would like to see at what MPH and terrain/wind conditions and vehicle load you arrived at this 16 MPG. Being so new and very little feedback being reported so far. What tires/psi?, things like that can become very important info to know so whatever you can or willing to provide will be of benefit to all.

16 on a new runner, ouch. With the 5th gen, my mpgs got a little better, like maybe a couple mpgs better, but that didn’t last long. On the highway I can get about 17/18 mpgs with no RTT, on back roads doing 40 to 60 mph, I’m pushing 20, again cheap OEM tires and no RTT. Once I put on my more rugged tires, and RTT, I’m down to 15 highway, 18ish on back roads.

Let’s see some Picts of your new ride.

Breaking in as the manual dictates is never a bad idea and fuel economy improving after a bit is not unheard of.

Of course, there's a lot of factors involved. The computer might be optimistic, pessimistic, zooming at 85 MPH will wreck MPG vs 70, wind, hills, etc.

Calculating by hand or app at the pump is the best way to see true fuel economy and see how it shapes up.

16 sounds low, one of my 23 ORP has very low miles and I get 21 cruising at ~68mph on the highway. Do you hit a lot of wind when driving?

Also 60.5k is gonna take me some time to get used to, mine was 46.5k just 2 years ago...

16 mpg definitely sounds low. I consistently get 19-22 On the highway and average around 18 mpg overall in mixed driving on my 24 ORP. I recently test drove a 5th gen SR5 4x4 and averaged about 21-22 on a highway test drive, but that was with babying the throttle.

What I noticed on this new gen, is that the MPG’s tank as soon as you have to put your foot on it for anything. At the end of the day, these are large, heavy vehicles, and that 4 banger doesn’t like having to work.

Turbo tax: lean into the pedal and summon greater boost, use more fuel. Spare the turbo, and get better results. The old six-shooter just guzzled regardless, so there’s some adjustment. The variance in reported real world mileage for Gen6 we see is more a function of individual usage and driving styles.

People knock the hybrid for not putting up eye-popping epa numbers on paper, but the electric motor intervening at the right times helps to flatten out mpg peaks & valleys, especially around town. Well kept secret that it actually is worth the extra dough.

So the 5th gen's 20-22mpg highway is somehow "guzzling" but still ends up being faster than the LC250 that's functionally identical to the hybrid 4Rs. If that's your "secret" you can keep it, lol.

Exactly. When I think of “real world” fuel economy I imagine that number being generated by a large sample size over a long span of time. We have neither with the sixth gen. I think the only people who can help Ron with his question are other 6th gen owners with their own anecdotal fuel economy comparisons.

I have a 25 4Runner TRD Sport 4WD and initially I was getting between 16.5-17 mpg. I have a 25 mile commute to work which is 80% Highway. I now have 1300 miles on it and my mpg has improved to around 19mpg. One thing I have noticed is if you keep it around 70 and baby it your gas mileage will improve but here in Florida if your not going 80+ you will get run over lol and your mpg will suffer. Enjoy the new ride

Initially I was getting around 16 @80mph or faster. I will say it has gotten better and I get around 18mpg at that speed now. Not exactly sure why but my commute home I get around 19.5 and in the morning I am at around 18

Not sure if it has anything to do with it but I do have the OEM crossbars and 20 inch wheels with Nitto Ridge Grapplers so I am sure that adds a little extra weight. I ended up moving the average MPG off the main screen so i am not staring at it and I have enjoyed the 4runner more ever since I did that hah

Are you relying on the onboard reporting? You could be getting better or worse mileage but you would only know that via tracking each fill up and see if the overall mpg matches the vehicle lie-o-meter.

Those numbers aren't a dramatic difference yet. Add in variance for computer estimation, driving habits, etc. and you can easily explain the discrepancy.

Fuelly has the 5th gen averaging 17-18 MPG in aggregate and the '24 Tacoma at 19. I expect a better picture to emerge as time goes on and more people get 6th gens.

Heck, my commute has quadrupled recently (home move plus office move) and now I am consistently averaging 20 MPG per tank instead of 18 MPG - all regularly calculated at the pump.

Isn’t it supposed to be getting 25 mpg on highway though? That’s a huge discrepancy.

Looking at Tacomas on fuelly by year 24 is .5mpg and .3 mpg more than 22 and 23.

your commute sounds like it has a lot more freeway driving so of course the mpg will go up. Heck the 23 that I drive more frequently sees 22-23 on all highway trips at 70mph.

Toyota does list 25mpg for 4wd gas models, in fact it's supposed to be one mpg better than the hybrids.

Sounds like Toyota figured out the EPA test cycles and optimized for the test.

The 2.7 in the F-150 and 2.3 in the Ranger have similar city/highway/combined ratings (26 MPG highway if I recall) and Fuelly have them in the mid-18's and 19's respectively so I suspect the 4Runner could be similarly over-performing on the EPA test cycle.

(of course Fuelly is just an average and not a great yardstick for highway only performance)

On the other hand, TFL's MPG test without and with the airdam on their '25 SR5 saw results just below and just above 23 MPG (respectively, 0.8 MPG difference) so that's not as far off of EPA. I've only kissed 23 MPG keeping speed around 68-72 MPH in my '21 so that's probably an improvement already.

18 MPG at 80 sounds comparable to what I'd expect in a 5th gen, but only so much to be done at such speed being they're both bricks.

It was a dealer added option for the tires, not a bigger size just an AT tire instead of the oem all season tire. 275/55/20

I guess it depends on if you consider 8% as close or not.

I would expect to get 23 mpg highway at 80 mph. A 2 mpg hit from epa seems pretty standard for most vehicles. Why they aren’t rating the vehicles at 80 mph when that’s the speed of traffic on most highways is silly.

Yes, hybrid doesn’t shout its virtues, but unless it’s a full-tilt Pro or TH, it’ll achieve significantly better mpg's and feels more refined under most driving conditions versus the base 2.4T. Driven back to back with the old 4R, you’ll think you mistakenly left the Gen5’s parking brake engaged.

If it’s a financial decision, skip the softex on the $55k OR Prem, and take the $52k base OR Max.
