What's the best oil to use in my 4Runner? Most of my driving is at night. Thanks.

Canola. Smells like french fries. JK.

Literally anything that meets factory recommendations. There are a ton of oil debate threads here. Use google to find these threads since this site's search function is... Well it's there.. works sometimes.

I personally only add Penzoil Ultra Platinum. But as mentioned above any oil brand that meets factory recommendations is fine. I also only use OEM oil filters because they're cheap and do a great job.

Depends if you change oil yourself or have a Toyota dealer do it.
Lately I am having my dealer change and I specify Toyota bottle oil. Costs are comparable. The bulk oil dealers use may or may not be as good.
If its an independent shop (or DIY) I provide the oil and filter, its full synthetic 5 qt. Jugs from Walmart plus a couple single quarts.
I usually select Mobile 1 full syn, There is also Pennsoil, Valvoline and others.

My friend's brother-in-law said 0W-20 is better for night driving, especially for 2009-older 4Runners. Any thoughts?

Alright. I can't tell if this is a troll post. I give up.

Use Canola oil. Its the best late night oil. Don't use it during the day though. Swap out to something more heart friendly. I prefer Avocado oil for those day trips, it can stand up to the high heat. Then back to Canola for late night.

I change the oil every evening. No filter replacements ever. Oils always clean

Paraffin lamp oil seams to be the most logical choice.
Won't even have to use your headlights.

If you do settle on Olive oil (which is a great choice) just be sure to use extra virgin at night, but regular during the day.

Also, be sure it's cold pressed and sustainably sourced. Very important to not skip over the details.

Your engine doesn’t see night or day. It just wants the recommended viscosity and regular changes to be happy.

I feel the need to apologize for my assholery. There are just so many oil threads already so these typically get a little funny.

Toyota Genuine Motor Oil (TGMO) is Mobil 1 with an additive package spec'd by Toyota. Many users swear by it.

Depending on your climate you may find it beneficial to move to a different weight of oil though.
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is another good option with a lot of detergents, which helps keep everything clean. Choose the weight based off of your use and climate. Living in Toronto I don't imagine you'll need to change weight. TGMO and Toyota OEM filters will keep the engine healthy for a very long time. (Beware of counterfeit filters on scamazon or ebay. Just buy them from a dealer)

"Mobil 1 with an additive package spec'd by Toyota. Many users swear by it." My neighbor has 520k miles on his 2004 4Runner, he uses the cheapest oil and the cheapest filter.

And yes, I enjoyed your post because there are no less than 1,000 threads on this topic.

Yeah honestly change interval makes a bigger difference than brand. We all have our biases.

If it meets the oe recommendation its good to go. Same for filters.

Now back to it. What's the best oil to use for night driving?

I know it's an April Fools thread, but 0W20 should not be used in OP's 2009 at night. 20-weight oil is too thin in the version-one 1GR-FE.

A Lexus-badged BMW? Now THAT'S funny. (And unnerving at the same time.)

I propose benefits to changing oil brands to get different additive packages. Same goes for fuel brands-different additive packages. The goal is to keep innards of engine and fuel system clean with no gunk.
So I see no harm and possible benefits to change brands once in a while.
