60K Service Not Recommended Until 100k

    OK, so I just rolled in for my 55k service and wanted a quote for 60k service... the technician tells me I don't need any of the fluids replaced until 100k unless I am towing very often.

    Is this what others are told as well ?

    Transmission should be done at 60k. Also, have you done the differentials (front and back) and the transfer case? I think the diffs are every 20k miles. Dont forget to lube the drive shaft as well.

    Engine oil and filter get replaced every 5K. The additional fluids fall under "Special Operating Conditions" which state that if you're towing, using a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading, they should be replaced. It's in the manual. Obviously if you absolutely want it done, it's your vehicle and your money. Make them do it. The technician is basically telling you it's not necessary unless it falls under these conditions.

    Ask five people get four answers. Ultimately it's up to you what you want to do.

    I'm probably going to target 50k but I don't think it's going to really be noticeable if I waited to 70k, but hey.

    1 ) Open the Warranty and Service book came with your 4runner. (If you don't have the manuals, you can download from Toyota.com too..).
    2) Check for the maintenance needed for normal driving conditions. Those are a must.
    3) See if you fall into special driving conditions (per Toyota) , like Driving on dirt roads, towing, having car top carrier, etc..

    I don't know when I went to Dealership for service when I give a list of maintenance items to do and never ask me any questions. They offer additional services if needed and I decide to deny or to do. Now I'm going to a Toyota Specialist independent shop. Same story. I tell them what I need and they suggest if anything else needed.

    They probably wont do the 60k right, nor the 100k. So i wouldnt worry about it.

    What is condition of the under hood fluids? Brake, PS, coolant? How about engine air filter? Any downside to changing early?

    Ask your self who loses from driving with worn out fluids. Fluids are cheap compared to the components they protect. The tranny is an expensive major part of your rig. Why risk damage.

    Unless you tow a lot I would wait until 100K. I also wouldn’t let the dealer do it as they will surely screw something up.

    Ha!! That's no shit.
    Funny that I've gone from "what's diff fluid" on my '86 to anal retentive on my '19. I think on my '86 I never did the tranny (manual), ever, and only did the diffs and t-case when I went straight axle and crawler gear in the t-case at about 150k. And never any problem, but I did keep up fully on the under hood stuff.

    For the brake fluid replacement just wait until your calipers seize up and replace the fluid when you replace them.

    Definitely do diff and T case fluid. I do them very often for folks, and recommend every 30k miles.

    Brake fluid Definitely do by 60k. Even if it looks OK.

    Trans fluid is a toss up. Some say wait. Coolant as well. The newer Toyota coolant and trans fluid are pretty durable.

    This sounds like a snarky comment, but it's the truth. Calipers on these are consumables just like that pads.

    Amen brother. Fluids are cheap a trans/engine or really anything that needs that fluid is expensive. Plus the trans/diffs/transfer case are super easy to do.

    I’m not joking. Some of you guys are insane with how often you change fluids. My Tacoma is at 200K miles and has the original brake fluid. My 4Runner has 120K and just got some brake fluid changed when I replaced a caliper a few weeks ago. It needs another caliper replaced soon too. Replace your engine oil regularly everything else lasts a long time.

    I've never changed gear oil in any manual transmission/differential on my lige unless I was servicing it for other reasons.

    Same. Only diffs when i do/did some long deep water crossings, or gear changing. Im not doing my trans in this rig, unless it scatters itself on the trail/highway. (2018 w/120k and counting up fast)

    My maintenance intervals

    oil change every 5k no matter what
    Power steering flush every 20-30k
    Transmission every 60k
    Front diff, rear diff, transfer case is the real throw up. For me its every 30-60k drain and refill. Sometimes every thirty or 60 if im lazy. Good mark number probably 45-50k
    Long life coolant every 40-50k or so. Doing this will allow the yota a full long healthy life

    Oil change every 10,000 miles, transmission at 100, 000 transfer case and diffs whenever they need service or have been run under water. Never changed brake fluid or power steering fluid unless there was service performed.

    Saying that oil should be changed every 5,000 miles " no matter what" is foolish and wasteful.

    Why in the world do you need to flush the power steering fluid every 20-30k? That’s such a waste of time, money and resources. The same goes for the other fluids.

    Thats just stupid advise to give. Brake fluid attracts water, water becomes rust plus poor fluid impacts braking performance. If it never needed to be changed or in your case 200k mile intervals, Toyota would say that. As for the power steering fluid, there is a post about a guy having to pay $2,200 for a new rack and pinion. It costs $7 and maybe 15 minutes to flush and fill the power steering fluid. Ill pay the $7.

    You are so correct. I do all my maintenance to the "T" and document all of it with receipts. I do my own maintenance. Just think how many "average" owners dont do the differential fluid, transfer case, or lube the drive shaft. Years ago it used to be called Lube, Oil, Filter. Not any more so people taking it to Jiffy Lube (i cringe typing that) arent getting the drive shaft lubed.

    You're so correct about hesitation buying used. Plus I read in a post that the dealership charges $70 to lube the drive shaft. I guarantee the "average" owner isnt getting that done. Thats why I save all my receipts and have an Excel journal with every bit of maintenance I do. If I go to sell it, I know the person will be appreciative of my OCD and the maintenance I do.

    AMEN BROTHER. Looks like you got a good schedule there. Stick to it and you will get a long life out of your 4R. I just checked my records and I am changing the diff and transfer case about every 26k miles. I use redline synthetic. Its not cheap ($27/qt) but I dont care. I just had the front axle replaced (under warranty) because of that known issue (TSB). If I would of had to pay for that, it was $5k. F THAT! Ill keep my maintenance schedule
