I have had my white 2022 SR5 4 runner(Karen) for approximately 4 months. A couple weeks ago I drove to the store-no problem. When I came back my fob unlocked the door, but the alarm went off and I was unable to start the car. I thought maybe my battery was dead. After getting a jump and still not being able to start the car I figured it was the battery in my fob. I had someone bring me the other fob and was able to start the car and get home. I have had no problems since except for today. On our way out today Karen did the same thing. So now I actually changed the battery. I still cannot start the car or turn off the alarm. So my question is- do I need to reset the fob after a battery change? I find it kind of odd that both fobs would stop working within a couple weeks of each other due to dead batteries. I am waiting for Toyota to call me back. Im stuck without a car (on a volleyball tournament weekend!) until I can figure this out.

Even with a dead battery, the key fob can still be detected by the car if held close to the start button. Push the button with the dead key fob and should start the car. Use the physical key to lock and unlock the vehicle. Google if you don’t understand the method described above.

I tried this the first time when I was stuck at the store and it did not work. This time I have changed the battery in the fob so shouldn’t it work now? Any in sight on changing fob batteries and if it should just work or if I need to have it reprogrammed?

Same think happened to me recently.

Replaced the battery in the main remote and nothing changed.

Used secondary remote and all was fine with no issues going forwards.

Made me think it was an intermittent issue with one of the related/tied in systems.

Do you have remote app connected to your car? Did you ever disconnect the DCM with the SOS button through the customer service?

So I got a call from the dealer and he helped me figure out that I had an after market alarm. I guess the kill switch had been engaged. I was able to disable that alarm and my 4 runner starts up just fine. Now I need to figure out how to work the Karr alarm or get the code or something. It would be nice to keep this alarm on because car theft is such a big problem these days and this system obviously shut things down.

So let me preface by saying it’s been a lifetime since I had an aftermarket alarm on a vehicle.
Does your alarm have a separate key fob?
    Was it supposed to?
How does one turn it on or off (without a thief knowing how that’s done)?

    Do you really need one?

If the dealership can’t help you, I suggest contacting…
