I had 3 different Scouts back in the 70's and 80's. Rust was their killer. Otherwise they were pretty good 4 wheeling machines. But the idea of new ones that will be all electric???....hard pass here.

What the return of the International Scout should look like:

    Give us the original back.

Just my two cents though. I'm sure soccer moms and Gen Z snowflakes will love the new EV version

Between the EV weight, the price they are gonna try to gouge buyers for, and the direct-to-consumer model they want to emulate Tesla for, the "Scout" story is gonna be fun to watch.

Shame, I was too young to get in on the Scout action.

I’d give it a shot with a range extender solving that issue. But they’re probably too wide for my taste and I don’t really care about retro styling. (then again, everything is 78-80” wide these days)

Entry models starting at $50K? No thanks!

If (nobody put me in thought prison when I say this) The GOVERNMENT would produce electric or hybrid vehicles that were $15K and had the infrastructure to support recharging stations spaced in 50-100 mile increments out in BFE, and the cars could go 600 miles on one charge, people might be more apt to embrace them.

I see an electric car as nothing more than an inconvenience. I see hybrid vehicles as only slightly lesser of an inconvenience.

We had a good thing going in the early 2010s with many small, compact, CHEAP, gasoline PZEV cars(think Yaris, Fit, Focus, Fiesta, Sonic, Versa, etc) with ~40mpg fuel economy that would have been a good bridge to conserve oil and still allow people to get around while battery tech matures, but the government decided to subsidize expensive heavy EVs instead.

    So here we are.

For the record I own two of those small, cheap cars that get 40mpg, one I recently bought, I did my part.

You remember the 80's models Honda CRX? Those were fantastic! Fun car to drive, got killer gas mileage well into the 40's.

I'm still trying to figure out what Honda was thinking when they brought the same car back (Now called the CR-Z) as a hybrid that topped out at 38mpg. Total waste on Honda's behalf.

I wanted a Toyota Yaris so bad. Test drove them the first year they came out. I think I'd bought my Honda Element by that time and didn't want to trade in. Yaris...the one that got away! Also test drove a Honda Fit in 2014 but opted for the Accord.

Can't speak for Focus/Fiesta/Sonic, but we had Versas for our company cars. Man, they were shitty. Constant transmission repairs. Would never buy a Nissan (maybe a truck). Curious with the Nissan/Honda merge.

I thought the new Scout had a plug-in hybrid option.

That's the nissan CVT for you. Ford had their issues with the DCT in the Fiesta and Focus as well. The non-Toyotas were best bought with the stick which were well tested overseas.

I just bought a Versa with the 5 speed manual. Very fun to drive, simple. The drivetrain has been tested by taxi drivers in LatAm countries so it's got a good service history. A little short on gearing but even at over 3k RPM at 65mph I am getting over 40mpg easily.

And yeah, Yaris was the one that got away. My wife vetoed it at the time because she didn't like the look. Now she realizes the mistake. LOL That 4 speed in the Yaris, not sporty by any means but a true tank of a transmission.

Wife's Yaris sat in the garage for months after she passed, use it to commute to work these days. Fun little 5spd. Seats could be more comfortable but for the price at the time (she bought it new)it's a great little car and I have done little maintenance on it over the years. She loved it and always laughed at me when i fueled up the truck.

    Sorry for your loss.

The seats were the one part of the car that could've used a few dollars to spiff up. But a 20 dollar costco seat cover helps the look at least.

I'm sorry for the loss of your wife. May her laughter ring on every time you go out to the garage.
