My boss had a fun time with the run flats on his BMW. He had a meeting with a client 2 hours away and got a flat/low pressure 3/4s of the way to the meeting. He decided to keep driving on the run flat but it shredded leaving him stranded. He got a tow to a tire shop but they couldn’t find a tire locally. Only option was to stay at a hotel and wait for a tire to be delivered the next day or get a two hour tow home. He chose the tow. A spare tire would have made this a half hour inconvenience.

Is it me or does the new 4Runner have much less legroom than this Honda CRV? I am willing to bet the 4R is much longer than the CRV also.

It’s really strange. I don’t know where all the space went. The overall length is supposedly 4” longer than the 5th gen too.

Assuming the seat attachment points are the same between hybrid and gas models, I assume the rear seats were mounted where they are in order to allow clearance to mount the battery pack.

The wheelbase only increased by 2.4 inches.

If my wife and I go anywhere, we go in my 4R. I want to live longer so won’t ever get in anything with her driving, and she doesn’t like me driving her car, so that’s it.

If that is true then the priorities of the designers are egregious.

Unibody vehicles are much more efficient as far as interior packaging goes. Like a Honda Fit and Element are relatively small, but enormous inside.

Some 4Runner drivers don't commute at all, so the entire vehicle is optional. Just need the badge from the Pro grille:

Never mind a crossover SUV, compare the rear legroom of your 5th gen with that of a Corolla...

^Probably many. People who thought the 5th gen was a living fossil may find the modernized 6th gen viable.

If one doesn't know what came before them, it's easier for them to take whatever comes at them with a smile and ask for more.

With the likes of the fanny pack couple eager to buy the brand, Toyota wishes its long time buyers would just go away and not mention what it used to make.

Will there be enough newbies to keep sales numbers where they need to be or will the 4Runner slowly die.

There is a sucker born every minute. As long as new people keep financing their way into the "Toyota reliability" image and then trade it before warranty is up, the lore can go on for quite a while because few want to admit they ended up paying 100k for a 70k Toyota(counting interest paid) and it was not what they hoped for.

New Camry buyers would not believe me if I told them the maintenance horror stories I have seen with the XV10 and XV20 Camry/ES owners that ended up making it to 400k miles on original motor and transmission. A relative of my wife had an ES300 that made it to 400k doing long freeway commutes and she only did oil change whenever she remembered every year or two.

The outside of the TRD Sport and Limited are growing on me, the color matched everything is far nicer than the alternative. I cant help but notice half way down the new owner took a picture of the 4wd selector, i cant help but see the shifter boot, it already looks bad and its only a few days old? Meh whats that thing going to look like in 5 years, be full of crumbs and dust.... Meh not my favorite...

^Is there a strong detent on the 4wd dial? If not, with all the fat people around putting that so close to the driver thigh is a daring move.

Why are the wheels so large? 18 inch rims is ridiculous, it lowers fuel economy, comfort, and capability and increases the cost of new tires. Off road vehicles should have 17 inch rims max.

Also do the new 4runners SR5 and Limited have metal skid plates still

unless they use different brake rotors for upper trims, it's all vanity since the SR5 still comes with 17 inch wheels.

And the only way to get body color fender cladding is now mandatory 20 inch wheels via TRD Sport or Limited.

I recall someone mentioned here that the SR5 is losing the front metal shield along with power seat, spare tire, and gets weaker driveline parts if it follows the Taco path.

Now I am 2nd guessing myself if I should have gotten a 24 SR5. Might have caused tension in the marriage if I got a 3rd new 5th gen though...

At least SR5 has 17 inchers so hopefully it's an easy swap.

As for metal skids, it's not on the spec sheet anymore so I bet it's been cut but no images I can find yet of an SR5.

    I think so too.

I believe there will be a lot more people buying the 6th gen as a "pavement SUV" compared to the 5th gen.
Not that every 5th gen owner see dirt either, but people that didnt need a rugged vehicle would look at the Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, or even Cherokee/GC. Now these people might also consider the 6th gen with the modernized interior

You think this looks like a modernized, well thought out interior?

Yeah that shifter boot looks terrible. I still think a gated shifter looks more clean.
That location for the 4WD knob looks like you could easily bump it or spill food and drink on it. That’s right where you want to put your lunch.

They did that with the 3rd gen Taco, if you want to see an unsightly shift boot, check out a 3r gen with the manual transmission.
