I always thought the purpose of overlanding was to take a break and get off the grid for a few days. Maybe I was wrong.

You can’t make YouTube content and let people know you are “overlanding” without the internet!

Exactly. How else can you flex on Instagram or upload your bro-landing video's to YouTube unless you have constant internet access!

Attention economy requires post-scarcity society and seeing our economic backsliding, there will be less of it in the short term and maybe even medium term. That is, you can't make a living attention whoring if everyone cutting advertising budgets.

Don’t be surprised. I’m betting websites serve up custom home pages that will appeal specifically to you based on your online history.

By now, with all the AI being used in the advertising world, it’s very easy to create custom website imagery specifically tailored for each user’s tastes.

This is all made possible by ad-trackers, and cookies, and other online data. Companies, political organizations, and media soak up this data. Knowing what a user thinks (based on what they consume online) allows any organization to not only target content, but it allows them to create specific opinions inside the heads of the users.

To some degree, it’s always been about the ability to convince others to think in a certain way, but it used to be easier to tell that somebody was trying to persuade you to think something. That’s not the case now, technology allows for this to happen in much more subtle, hidden, and deceptive ways. It’s not just custom web-pages for individual users. All content on-line is pretty much driven and created using these techniques. It’s a brave new world.

If you value your own individuality and your values, best thing to do is be extremely dubious about everything you look at on line. If you’re experiencing strong emotions at what you’re looking at on-line (positive or negative), chances are those feelings have been precisely engineered.

It's probably AI generated. I just typed in "camp fire in front of a 4Runner at night" and Google Gemini popped this out.

Unfortunately, it’s been an actuality for a good while now. I had to actually stop using pretty much all newsfeeds many years ago when I started to recognize that I was getting very specific types of stories, that always elicited the same emotional response. I had a very clear sense that I was being played with, and in very specific ways. Content is designed to play with your head for different reasons, to get you to spend money, to get you to like someone, or to get you to think something. The big problem is that increasingly, on-line content is designed to do all those things at once! And it’s been very successful doing that!

Just curious, what if you did the same query, but add “with front tire on fire” lol

Lol! It needs moar molle panels and spare tire swingout.

Wait, don’t. We have a huuuge AI processing farm near me that uses a massive cooling loop that goes into Lake Michigan. Everytime somebody plays around with the AI picture makers, Lake Michigan becomes a little bit warmer. You’ll kill all the fish! :p

Plausible and likely the way of future advertising.

I tested to see if this is AI. I had my husband check this website. He’s at work so different location, different IP, does not use his work computer to look for 4Runner stuff since he doesn’t drive my 4R. He has a GMC so never looks at any 4R forums.

Same image of the Starlink 4R is on the website at his end.

Yep. I feel bad about the fish but not that bad. I was able to retire last year, a full 12 years ahead of plan, because I worked in tech for the same chip maker since 2007.

Starlink is basically the only realistic internet choice in my neighborhood.

Fixed wireless is like 25 down/3 up, unless you get some seriously expensive version that requires you to occasionally climb on the roof to change SIM cards.

i have had Starlink for almost 3 yrs. I actually only use it as backup for my cable ISP which shits the bed every month or so. We live in a very rural area and all the power lines and cable above ground. On a roam plan I have Starlink on-demand and pay by the drink when needed. It’s a godsend and I recommend it to anyone who’ll listen. I get about 800mbps down with my cable isp and about 200 with Starlink.

There is no cable run for TV or internet in my neighborhood.

Thank goodness for Starlink, because I didn’t manage to figure out the internet situation until we were under contract to purchase.
