I've posed this question on other TPMS threads in the past, and don't think I ever got a definitive answer.

Will a matching spare wheel & tire with a TPMS sensor be recognized if rotated into the mix, or will the system just keep seeing the OEM 4th sensor now in the spare location? Keep in mind the models up to 2019 only have the TPMS idiot light that goes on if one tire (or more) gets low. I just recently purchased this wheel with TPMS from a fellow member (thanks @wax poetic), and am looking to add a 5th Falken Wildpeak AT4W tire to match the other 4 and am curious as to the TPMS readability if used in the rotation...

I suppose this should be in the Tire/Wheel section, though...

    Oooh look, another mod.....
This thread may help. Check post #20, I think that guy said he got it to work?

Says he got it to work using a maestro unit with his aftermarket head unit, so I'm not exactly sure what that is. He also said it only displayed 4 pressures, so I am guessing it's the 4 mounted on the wheels in use, but I cannot confirm that.

Heck, I wouldn't care if the 5th TPMS didn't get picked up, as long as the one rotated into the spare did, and the idiot light wouldn't come on. I suppose I'll just have to get the Falken tire and see for myself. I wouldn't need to deal with it until the next tire rotation...

I have an '18 SR5 that only shows the single tire icon, not the individual pressures of 4-5 tires. My spare does not have a TPMS, it has an old school valve and the tire light never came on, no matter what the tire position was.
Yesterday I had new AT4's installed on 6 newer wheels (going to Alaska and I want 2 spares). I drove the 25 miles home with 10 active sensors and no issues. Hope this helps

EDIT: I did keep the old tire/wheel combo as there is plenty of tread, just not enough to get to Ak and back.

If you rotated the spare in without the TPMS sensor, and the other tire with a sensor was in the spare location, and the light did not go on, it sounds like I will be good doing the same.

Did you have the tire shop activate the other 6 sensors?

Yes, the shop said the new sensors were active.

I read not all 4runner trims can read more than 4 tpms.
If not supported by the OBD2 you might need a independent system.
My Scanguage 2 shows 5 tire positions, but I have not tried a 5th tpms yet to find out if my OBD2 can read a 5th.

On one hand, I'd like to be able to scan all 5, but I'm also good with 4 being scanned as long as the tire light doesn't go on if the 4th in in the spare position.

This may or may not help.

I have a 2015 limited. The spare has a TPMS sensor in it. If I look at it with techstream, I can see all 5 sensors, but not their locations. The instrument cluster does not show locations. It just shows when one (or more) is low. If I did a 5 tire rotation it wouldn’t matter to the TPMS where the tires are, just how much pressure is in them.

My daughter has a ‘22 RAV. After tire rotation, a reset button is pushed. After driving, the car figures out tire location from steering wheel angle position and wheel speed.

My 18 with the maestro rr does not show them on my Alpine spot for it. Still only the dash light.
