Depends if you drink Toyota's marketing Koolaid that says the new OR is at the same level as the old Pro.

I mean, wasn't the old OR essentially at the same level as the old PRO? 1" lift and fancier shocks was the only performance difference.

Definitely not $7k worth of difference between the two, which we all knew back then as well.

Well the 5th gen Pro didn't have any sway bar disconnect, while the new ORP has a new sway bar disconnect set up, so one could argue the new ORP is better value than the old Pro?

I don't know. That's all I can come up with to encourage people to move on to 6th gen so the market for 5th gen gets a little softer for my next build.

My 2023 TRD Pro listed for $56,490, the same options on a 25 comes to $71,542.

To be fair the hybrid system is included, however since they didn't give the customer an option of a gas only Pro so the prices are indeed what it is, before the Pro markup of course.

I am curious to see how much fuel it saves the customer, considering LC250 testers are reporting they are struggling to get over 20mpg on the highway with street tires, maybe it will improve when more worn in. With a 4 gallon smaller tank, I would hope it's more than a 15% improvement.

At some point these manufacturers have to be liable for these BS fuel economy numbers. How can they market 25 mpg and then the vehicle struggles to get 20? That’s a huge difference.

Maybe when the engine breaks in and it's mostly pulse-and-glide driving under 45 miles per hour, I can see the hybrid getting close to 25mpg without too much aero drag and the electric motor able to pull the weight more of the time. But personally if that's my typical driving I would rather drive a Venza or something that's more road oriented.

I did the hypermiling test for a couple of weeks, basically driving like an old man, coasting, rolling stops and I got 21 mpg with my 4Runner. When I run pure gas I get 20-21. My 2018 Tacoma Trd Pro was about the same numbers. When I look up the Tacoma on fuelly, I'm not impressed with the 24 Tacoma mpg's.I would imagine the 4runnerwill have the same results. The motor, transmission, and driveline being equal the 4Runner will weigh quite a bit more with the heavier SUV body from the C pillar back, so it would stand to reason the Taco's numbers will be the 6th Gen 4R's ceiling.

My mpg when cruising at 70 is about 21-22mpg. The new ones should ideally get 26 or better with the significantly smaller tank to get the same range for me.

I keep seeing mention of smaller fuel tanks in these newer vehicles and I now have a new conspiracy theory. "They" are lowering the range of gas and hybrid vehicles so there is less range anxiety over electrics once they are fully forced onto the population. It's like slowly boiling a frog...

By regulation the automakers are required to advertise the EPA rated fuel economy numbers. That's a whole boondoggle with dyno testing in climate chambers then applying fudge factors to account for drag and rolling resistance.

The EPA hwy test cycle is done at 40 mph... Blame the gub'ment.

I’m willing to bet that the manufacturers have an influence on the mpg testing “results”.

^Mfrs do testing and submit the supporting calculations and data to the EPA for certification. It's an absolute boondoggle akin to aircraft certification. However, if the EPA test cycle doesn't match real-life driving profiles, it isn't the mfr's fault.

In the past my Toyotas got what was advertised, my wifes 21 Rav4 Hybrid gets 40+ mpg's in the summer, winter gas and cold weather drops it down to the mid 30's. I check out fuel economy in Fuelly, I figure that's pretty accurate, real world numbers from real people.

    3rd gen’s had a 18.5 gallon tank.

Total range wasn’t so much the issue as charging time/convenience is (not to mention all the apps and shenanigans) and with some hybrids blowing through 600 miles ranges plus Ford making the 36 gallon tank standard on the F-150 also torpedo the idea.

    it’s 100% a packaging thing.

Toyota hasn’t exactly been doing great on vehicle packaging this generation too. See: Battery placement, Sequoia’s shelf, tumble seats make for a never flat load floor on two row models.

Yeah, anyone who owned a 3rd gen remembers how much it sucked to have to fuel up constantly due to the same tank size as a contemporary camry but 2/3 the gas mileage.

You are right that even today I think Camry's have ~600 mile range with its ~50mpg combined.

It’s crazy how the Toyota designers don’t care about functionality anymore. These weird decisions that kill storage space, the ability to have a flat floor and larger gas tanks and super annoying.

Can you list the specs for everything on that $71,542 2025 build? Your 2023 is equipped exactly the same as that 2025?

Yeah, I was only joking... and looking for an excuse to use the kick ass site emoji that never gets used.

I do like having a bit more range but it's weird how the vehicle computers calculate the range to empty display.

For example, my wife's '14 JGC has a 24.6 gal tank and will consistently show 450+ miles after a fill-up.

However, I don't ever remember my 4runner ever showing 420+ miles after a fill-up of the 23 gal tank, even before I killed the mileage with mods and was getting similar MPG. Maybe it did and I just can't remember since I've been getting 15 MPG for so long...

Either way, a range of 300-350 miles is fine for family trips since they usually require potty breaks. When I'm by myself though, it is nice to only have to stop once vs twice on some trips.

But I agree with you, charge time for electrics is the real killer when they have similar or shorter range.

Since Toyota doesn't offer the 6th gen pro with gas only, and the hybrid option on OR, ORP and Limited run 2800 dollars, it stands to reason if a comparable gas only TRD pro existed, it would be 68,742 dollars.

FWIW the OR Premium i reserved base price was $54,970, packages and options of $5,050, dealer fee of $1,450 = $61,458. Options listed are, 3/4 ARB roof rack, moonroof, tow tech package, mud guards, TRD 18' wheels / all weather mats. Unless I'm missing something the difference between this and the Pro outside of the hybrid is fox shocks, some leather, better skids, and misc cosmetic things.

oh silly me I didn’t even pay attention that you were the poster! :anonymous:

I’m curious how range is calculated in different vehicles since I’m sure it varies. In my last vehicle when some towing cut range to around 180-220 miles, the computer stubbornly stuck to a ~315 mile estimate despite several tanks passing through so clearly Kia programmed in some minimum.

on the other hand, something tells me Toyota won't be making too many of those base trim GX550s at least the first few years.

You can't post the build sheet from the Toyota website or you don't want to? I am guessing there are things on that 2025 that are not on your 2023. Not disputing that the updated, modernized 6th gen costs more, just want to see what specific items make up that price jump you mentioned in your post.

I used the same options in the build sheet on toyota.com that my 23 Pro came with. I understand it's a hybrid and has more safety features, but the price increase is ridiculous.

True. It doesn’t seem like they are making many of any of the GX Trims. I rarely see them on the road or the Lexus dealer I drive by. Still, if I was paying $60K for an SUV I would wait for one of those over a fricken 4Runner.
