Yep- happened to my 2024 with 2400 miles. Went into vehicle customization menu and FOB quit working remotely. Bought the Carista EVO OBD2 on Amazon- used the free trial and fixed it. Wireless door locking was disabled- selected enabled and fixed it. Payed $79 on Amazon and received it in less than 24 hours. I did have to sign up for 30 day free trial. Unbelievable Toyota hasn’t fixed this issue. I will admit I haven’t gone back in to the menu option to try again. I’ll leave well enough alone

Wife’s 2024 ORP just had this happen with less than 3k miles. I recently installed an accessorides remote start about a month ago and have had zero problems until now. Though it might be related until I saw this thread. I can recall using the fob the other day no problem then the wife noticed it wasn’t working not long after changing settings. Going to see if the dealer can fix it and not mention the remote start. If not I think I will go the Carista route like others have. Totally unacceptable for a vehicle at this price.

edit: Carista did the trick. The wireless fob setting was actually disabled like others have stated. Changed that setting as well as a bunch of others.

I’m having the same issue. Recently tried adjusting the door lock volume setting and now key fob not unlocking/locking doors but proximity sensors still work.

Went to the Toyota service center and made them aware of this issue as all have reported on this forum, but they are saying it is caused by my after market remote start that the dealership installed when we bought it. Hmmm…

Anyone else have an after market remote start installed?

No way they made you pay $100. Contact Toyota corporate if they don’t want to give you a refund.

also in the future, if they really won’t bulge and plan on making you pay, just say no and do it yourself with carista, it’s $10/month and you can cancel anytime

I just ordered the Carista EVO and 12 months coverage for $80 with free shipping on their website with a leftover BF discount. Seems like a good tool for my new to me 2024 4R Limited with 1026 miles being delivered next week, potentially for more issues like this. Thanks for all of the great information in this thread. You guys are great!

    New user here.
I can confirm this issue is still present in the 2024 4Runner.
    I owned a 2015 4Runner SR5, and just traded/upgraded to a 2024 4Runner Limited. Both remotes worked fine at delivery.
I started adjusting the settings, including the chirp volume level. Both remotes stopped working. The exact symptoms described in this thread.
Based on the information in this thread, I decided purchase the Carista interface to the OBDII reader (on sale for Black Friday), and purchase the 12-month subscription (on sale for $29.95). I reset the setting, and now both remotes work again.
A big THANK YOU to the users of this community!

I can confirm that like everyone here, I made one change to the vehicle customization menu changing the beeper volume and both key fobs stopped working immediately. Thanks to this thread, I purchased a Carista EVO Bluetooth via Amazon for $55.99. I then signed up for the one month $14.99 membership through Carista. Paring the app to the OBD was super easy via Bluetooth. Once I was in the app, I found that wireless door locking was disabled. So I re-Enabled Panic Function on remove under other, Wireless Door Locking under Locking:Automatic, and Beep when locking/unlocking with remote under Locking: Beep & Blink - all of this is under the Customize More menu option. I think it is criminal that I had to spend this money to fix a Toyota known issue, but I saved myself a trip (hopefully) to the Dealership and and taking time out of my day off to fix something that should have never broken.

A lot of owners seem to have serious issues with the beep volume on the remote, as this seems to keep coming up. I guess I never paid much attention to this, or it's a 2020+ MY issue...those that are adjusting the beep volume, are you trying to make it louder or softer?

I was just playing around with the sound and went from a volume of 7 to 6 (so softer) and bam, there went the key fobs.

Both fobs quit working and I didn’t adjust beep volume but did mess with other buttons. When the dealer “fixes” this issue is there a firmware update or do they just enable the fob like Carista does?

Sorry to hear about both fobs failing. This forum plus others makes it seem like the dealership just re-enables the fobs with their software. I haven't seen or heard of any firmware updates (I'd be interested in the answer) but my 4 Runner does get the newest software features and updates so one would think- why is this still an issue after all these years? I wish you luck Rnrdani! My two cents is - if you have Carista, at least you can fix it yourself but if it doesn't work, well then at least you know there's larger issues that need fixing.

What'll be very interesting is whether the '25 model year, with all its newfangled whiz bang features still has the remote quit working when future owners adjust settings. We know Toyota never fixed this issue from 2000 thru 2024.

It's already known that the new drive train on the '24 Tacoma, which will be in the '25 4R, still uses the same ol' DS needle bearing in the front differential. How many years has Toyota had to fix that, but has ignored user input and continued using it?

It’s a whole new interface so I doubt this glitch will exist. Not to say there won’t be any other issues though

Thanks for the update. I did use Carista and am only at 2200 miles. Seems silly. Do the software updates happen through the cloud or is it a trip to the dealer to update?

The sad thing is, we've heard time and again about owners going to a dealer to get this fixed, and they have to tell the service writer how to fix it. Which they learned here.

It's apparently a thing with the GX as well, a person with a 22 GX (which has almost the same head unit interface as the 20+ 4R) posted essentially the same issue on the GX-OR Facebook page. I linked them back here for the answer... but they never acknowledged the post... so fuck 'em!

Hey all! I posted in another post I created earlier asking about how to fix this on my Lexus GX and the fix from Carista worked. This should also work on your 4Runners. I wanted to share this fix as it was very annoying. I spent hours researching this fix and I wanted to share the knowledge.

Do all of this at your own risk!

    1. Download Carista app
    2. Either use their dongle from their website or you can use an OBDLinkMX+ like I have
    3. Connect your vehicle after connecting the dongle > connect via bluetooth
    4. Launch the Carista app and search for your car
    5. Go to the customize settings once Carista is logged in (you will have to pay for the Carista app, I just paid the $14.99 price as this was worth my time. I promptly canceled the subscription afterwards)
    6. There's a setting under Locking: Automatic called Wireless Door Locking - change this to ENABLED. Mine was disabled.
    7. Turn your car ignition back off and exit the vehicle. Lock the vehicle and then use your remote "remotely", it should now work

I hope this helps out anyone who's having a hard time with this issue. The $14.99 it cost me for the app was well worth my time and effort. Now, I don't have to go to the dealership!

See photos below, one shows the Lexus vehicle dorr lock customizations and the other two are the Carista app settings I mentioned above.

This fix using Carista has already been discussed on this very thread.

although you’re the first one going through the process step by step. I’m sure it’ll help a Toyota or Lexus user in the future :)

Mind blowing that Toyota doesn’t do anything to fix the issue and that some dealerships make people pay to resolve it.

You should put this latest update on your "Key Fob Disabled..." thread.
