What was the mileages when you do the first oil change and your current mileages

im sorry is this an actual legit question? I dont know anyone who lets their 4runner idle for an extended period of time before shutting it off

 

What am I being dishonest about? If anyone is being dishonest it’s people like you that are constantly trying to scare people into wasting their time and money by unnecessarily changing their oil. Your engine doesn’t care if it’s oil is changed early or at 10K. It’s just going to keep on running.

I hadn't seen that. I guess it's a downside of turbo engines. I've heard of letting them idle after hard driving to cool the turbo and/or oil.

That's actually a very common practice for turbo engines. You don't want the turbo to spool when you shutting the car off.

Your truck is absolutely fine. You have no reasons to worry. I had the first oil change at 10,000 miles. I currently have 128,000 miles on it. Bought it brand new in 2018.

 

I think it’s actually to give it time to cool down.

 

It was surprising for me to see since I thought the idling/easy-driving before shut-off for turbo vehicles was still a thing of the past but evidently not.

But I imagine it’ll probably be most relevant for rest stops or side-of-the-road stops.

 

I’ve owned two turbo vehicles and rented a bunch and never let the engine idle before shutting it off. I didn’t even now it was a thing except for extreme driving on a racetrack. I think Toyota’s lawyers have been busy trying to limit their liability from as much as possible with this wording.

Bought mine with 80k on it, been changing between 9 and 10k, a few times a little over. I'm at 186k now, no leaks and it doesn't use any oil between changes.

I do mostly highway, 60 miles a day. If I mainly drove around town and/or lots of off-road, I'd change more frequently. Even with a 10k interval, I'm changing it every 5 months or so.

 

That is correct, the 'cool down' time is supposed to prevent coking of the oil in contact with hot components of the turbo (bushings and impellor shafts). 1 min. of idle time isn't bad, some turbos/engines list 3 mins. of cool down. 77 secs. works!

This guy may know what he’s talking about. That being said, I’m sure we’re fine with almost whatever we decide with these machines, within reason of course.

 

It would be nice if they could set it up so that you can park and lock it and it would just idle for a minute and shut itself off.

Definitely not convenient for anyone who parks in a garage.

 

I’m wondering if the auto start stop would just turn the car off when you were trying to keep it idling anyways.

 

I thought some engines kept coolant and/or oil flowing after shutoff but it seems I may have been hallucinating on how prevalent or not it is.

Toyota’s start/stop system is pretty smart, taking interior temperature, HVAC settings, brake pedal pressure, engine temperature, battery condition and more into account so I’d wager that’s been taken into account too.

I don’t remember which vehicle I was in but I do remember some systems turning the engine back on when shifted into park.

 

I wonder if we'll have a button to disable it. It seems a little ridiculous to recommend idling the car after being driven, but then have the engine shut down at stoplights.

 

That sounds more than a little ridiculous. Engine stop start is the dumbest new feature of the past decade.

 

Agreed. I can't imagine it saving any significant amount of fuel for the average driver. And, the extra wear on the starter hardly seems worth it. I shut it off in my Chevy every time.

From my interpretation of the manual, a minute's only recommended immediately after higher speed/heavier load use. I would expect the time spend coasting, the stop sign at the end of an off-ramp, pulling into a gas pump to generally be sufficient.
