This is true. Use a clay bar to get any and all dirt/dust/iron/etc... off of your vehicle. You should also use them on the windshield and head lights. I do. I clean my windshield and back window every 6 months with a clay bar.

Griot’s garage works well. Can be found at some parts stores. The spray helps the clay glide across the paint.

Clay bar is as easy as wiping off your 4Runner. There is nothing magic about using one. I use soapy water (2-3 drops of Dawn in a 16 oz spray bottle) for a lubricant.
I bought the cheapest clay bar I could find and it worked great. Dry with a micro cloth as you go, then seal with a spray-on ceramic.

One day I got distracted getting gas and left the gas cap off on a 300 mile roadtrip. It scuffed the side around the gas door. Will a clay bar clean this up?

    No.

A clay bar is a soft, malleable material used to remove contaminants from a vehicle's surface. It's often used on cars to remove dirt, grime, and other pollutants that can build up over time. What you need is a buffing/rubbing compound to polish out the scratch/scuff mark you have.

I thought like most newer vehicles it would throw an EVAP code if the gas cap is not on tight?
