Happened on my Tacoma but same smell with the 4R.

Could of been pretty bad thankfully co-worker noticed oil under my truck this morning.

Wife checked and no oil in my garage so must of happened on my way to work sometime. Luckily I'm assuming it was close as I was only 1 1/2 quarts low after changing the filter. It was just pumping out even at idle.

Anyone else had O rings break like this? Was completely broken when I took off the oil filter.

Glad you caught this before it got worse. These barrel type o-ring seals worry me. Sometimes they are super hard to spin on for no apparent reason. Even if they are lubed up well before install.

Interestingly, I changed the oil a few days ago and once loosened, the canister took a lot of turning force all the way until the o-ring cleared at the bottom. Once it was out, I realized I put on an aftermarket filter last time (probably mobil 1 brand). I replaced it with a factory filter and o-ring, and it seemed to turn easier when I was spinning the housing on. Spinning is the wrong word, but it was not excessively difficult to turn. I also backed the housing out to test the force required, and it also seemed easier than the aftermarket o-ring.

My guess is that maybe some o-rings are a tiny bit bigger than others which result in tons of compression and friction as it turns inside the barrel. To the point that, even if the o-ring is well lubricated, it could end up being torn as it turns inside the barrel. In other words, they get compressed so much, they squeeze out the oil film, bind, and tear. I’m always a bit paranoid when they take a lot of force to turn within the barrel.

I was just surprised as I've never had this style filter leak on me. Nor any of the older ones.

At the rate is was coming out it would be dry after almost any drive I think.

Not saying it couldn't be my fault but just skeptical since I've always done my own. And its been about 1k since the change so it was good for a bit.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
Years ago I had an annoying fuel filter/o-ring leak on my diesel that stunk all the time before I located the filter leak, I thought it was an injector line for awhile. Cleaned the o-ring real well and under bench lamp magnification I could see cracks from aging. I had bought several filters and they all had cracks in the supplied O-rings. I contacted the manufacturer(Baldwin) and included magnified photos of the o-rings. After moving my way up the food chain that rep sent me all new filters(4) along with a bunch of new o-rings for my filters and they aren’t cheap filters.
The very first rep I talked to tried to blow me off and said “oh it didn’t leak much, no big deal”….I replied potential engine fires are no big deal?

I change my own engine oil and filter on my 2022 T4R Premium 4WD. I buy the Toyota oil filter from my Toyota dealer parts dept.

I lubricate that new O-ring before and after stalling it on the end cap. Once I fill the engine with oil and start it, I let it run for 10 to 15 minutes and inspect for leaks under there before buttoning everything up and replacing the skid shield. So far so good. I’ve changed my oil twice so far on mine since purchasing the truck pre-owned / certified.

Isn’t there an adapter part (aftermarket?) that one can screw in to the engine to enable one to convert over to using a conventional spin-on oil filter? I might be interested in getting that conversion part.

Baker engineering makes a spin on adapter. It's about $300

$300.00!!!!!???? That's outrageously ludicrous! But, thanks for your reply. Looks like I'll just stick with using the standard element cartridge for that kind of money.

Sorry, I ment baxter but had a brain fart. Good reviews and will fit if you put on the trs skid. Not sure if it will fit on the sheet metal skid. A friend in Charleston SC has had one on a couple of 4runners 5th gen.
