    Hi All,
I can't get my pre-collision to work at all unless the cruise is set. Can someone explain to me the way the system is supposed to work? 2021 Premium.
    Thanks!

    What do you mean?

Are you getting an error or warning light?

Pre-Collision is supposed to be out of the way until the computer thinks you’re on a collision course with something.

The PCS uses the radar to detect when a collision might be imminent. It will first flash a warning to apply the brakes, and if they are not applied by the driver the brakes will be applied automatically.

The PCS system can be disengaged using the display between the gages and the buttons on the steering wheel. PCS is automatically turned on whenever the motor is started, even if it was disabled the last time the car was turned off. The PCS sensitivity can be adjusted, and the car remembers the adjustment.

Under normal circumstances you should never know the system is there.

Have you tried full on into a brick wall? How would you know its not working? Cruse is different and will slow accordingly. Anti collision is a separate thing i believe.

What kind of scientific testing are you using to prove this assumption?

I think it’s sensitive to distance and speed. In the video it seemed like you were closing on that car pretty quickly.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

The pre-collision sensor in my 2021 Tacoma saved my life. Literally.

I was driving to work one morning and had the cruise set at 66MPH. I wasn't paying attention very well, because a vehicle was coming alongside me very fast. They jumped right in front of me and almost immediately after, they braked. They braked hard.

They weren't brake checking me and it wasn't road rage. They got over into my lane to change lanes I guess? Then discovered they had to jump over ANOTHER lane so they could exit. But that lane was blocked. So they braked and waited to get over.

Now, all of this happened in the span of a few seconds. My Taco's dash lit up like a Christmas tree:

BRAKE!!! followed by very loud beeping over and over and over and over.

Then my brakes locked up (okay, they didn't lock up, but they were applied very hard) and the nose of my truck took a deep dive. Because of that, I didn't rear end him. Thankfully nobody was behind me at the time. The entire incident was over before I even realized what had happened or was happening. I sped back up and went on with my commute.

Until that moment, I thought the pre-collision system was dumb or annoying. Then that happened. I haven't complained about it (much) since that day.

    Borracho,
When I was a teenager I used to own very fast, very modified cars. When I got caught for speeding (80 in a 60mph zone, so I actually pulled over this time) I was able to defer my ticket if I passed a defensive driving course.
I took that course seriously and developed some very good habits because of it.

If you haven't taken this course, I highly recommend it. :p

Edit: Just giving you a little grief in light of the recent fender bender and now this story. All in good fun man.

I'm with Borracho, the only "incident" my 2013 had was in a free flowing on ramp leaving a hospital. The vehicle in front of me locked their brakes/brake checked as I was looking left to gauge my spacing to merge. They then left without waiting for the police who told me it was a known scam at that intersection - despite the multiple signs stating free flowing turn, do not stop - to get insurance money claiming they had injury. Little did they know I took a pic of their license plate and the cop was pissed, so they were getting cited for leaving the scene of an accident. If I had TSS it would have most likely prevented it, so to me its a plus on my 2023.

To be clear, my incident wasn't road rage. It was a case of "A bad driver never misses their exit". The guy who braked in front of me was trying to exit and needed to get over multiple lanes at once, but he couldn't because of the car to my right.

My situational awareness wasn't great that day. I won't make excuses why it wasn't, because to be honest...I don't remember. Maybe my dog died, maybe I was day dreaming about winning the power ball lotto. Who knows. But the Pre-Collision was there, and it worked.

I prefer not to enumerate any questionable incidents which may or may not have occurred in my youth so as not to sully the reputation of my bogus anonymous online persona.

    Touche.

The pre collision system seems to work well when needed, although I've never had it apply the brakes for me. Just an alert.
This has happened twice. Both times at around 35 mph, the car in front was turning into a parking lot and I had already started to let off the gas to let a larger gap form.

Honestly, the first time I heard the beep I thought the rig was broken.

on 4Runner pre collision system activates at speed above 7 mph. it is designed to reduce collision damage not to prevent it. prevention is for driver. otherwise driver will try to blame Toyota for not preventing accident

Looks like @kmeeg 's 4Runner came to a complete stop to avoid an accident. Is that not normal?

Wondering of you had the right turn activated and whether or not that causes any change in the response from the system?

The reason I ask, Is my wife's Subaru did the exact same thing in that same type of turning lane, that merged, with no turn signal and it shocked me of how quick it activated. Was just, internally wondering if other inputs could challange/change the auto activation.

The only time mine has ever even flashed "brake" at me was coming around a tight corner in a parking garage. Wasn't going to hit anything, and wasn't speeding. My Raptor on the other hand was a PITA and constantly beeping.

I have never had a light, beep or anything when cruise not engaged. I can pull right up to something and never see a light or get a notice. Guess its hidden until needed?

I think it has to do with approach speed. As others have commented mine has been triggered when someone in front of me is turning and I let foot off the gas slow deceleration but object in front of me. The computer just views a fixed object approaching at X speed sensing a collision.

Computer does not know the obstacle will be removed in a second after turn completed. It's startling the first time it happens.

In my experience, it will not activate if you already have your foot on the brake until you get very close and are still moving too fast. Seems to give you as the driver more time if you have activated the brake even a little.

My older Mazda just about slammed my face into the steering wheel the first few times it decided to brake for me. First time was another driver going at least 20 over cutting me off and speeding away. No real danger of rear ending the guy but the Mazda decided to slam on the brakes and come to almost a dead stop on the freeway. ABS and everything. Much happier with the 4Runner implementation
