When I bought my 4 cyl V-TEC (yo) 99 Accord, I remember my younger self feeling ecologically-conscious once I noticed the classy but subtle “LEV” sticker on the window. This was a federal designation man! I just bought a Low Emissions Vehicle! Take that Greenpeace!
That was a sweet engine, I got about 25mpg average. A few years later the accords started getting ULEV stickers (ultra low emmision vehicle).

Anywho, I’d guess that the 4runner actually would qualify under at least the LEV category. I’m thinking I should get some big LEV stickers made to display prominently on the hatch. A chrome leaf with green inlay would tie the whole theme together quite nicely. :p:D

We joke but the 4Runner is probably one of the most eco friendly cars when you take into account its entire life cycle emissions from production to use to end of life.

And that's mainly related to how long they last and not having to use fuel and resources to make more because of inferior parts/engineering.

I'm of the opinion that deserves an HOV sticker.

That is something that the people making the laws refuse to acknowledge. It’s similar in the building industry with the new energy codes. All that they care about is how much energy is used during operation not how much is needed to create the products.

Longevity sure but its mpg when used as a commuter dings its energy use credentials..

My bet is on the 1992-2001 Camrys and 8th and 9th gen Corollas. Those things are still EVERYWHERE in my area and many with >400k on them, 30mpg/40mpg easily on the highway, economical everything including tires.

By the time your 4Runner dies, battery technology will hopefully have improved to the point that it's useful, and then you can buy an new electric 4Runner....for probably somewhere around $150,000. lol

A decent gas compact like the Corolla (or Versa - even tossing in a CVT or two) would certainly blow away the 4Runner. Less lifetime fuel use, smaller tires, smaller components across the board, fluid fills, etc and can certainly still last.

Of course not on a trail, but for a runabout we can't beat scaling down.

Here's a chart by The Drive comparing estimated lifetime emissions for a number of different vehicles.

    https://www.thedrive.com/news/electric-pickup-trucks-are-dirtier-than-you-think

While pound-for-pound, BEV's are a lifetime plus over a comparable gas vehicle but we'd go a lot farther by looking at downsizing.

A lot can fly under the radar as they aren’t omnipotent, if you think something is inappropriate, give it a report.

    1. It wasn’t my statement
    2. If you actually read it, you would have seen it was about lifetime emissions from manufacturing to end of service life, not efficiency/fuel economy solely.

Didn’t read the entire article but does this take into account stuff breaking and needing to be replaced? I assume not given the steady slope for the GM and Rivian :D

I wonder what it looks like putting the 4Runner vs that EV Hummer when batteries, motors, etc start failing on the EV while the 4Runner powertrain plows on at 400K miles.

The fact that few of these EVs ever make it into multiple six figure mileage range without very expensive repairs/rebuilds makes it unlikely that we’ll know the real comparison of one to some 4Runner or LC at a quarter to half a million miles.

Yeah, I got it. And I thought it was funny. But not everyone has my sense of humor. I also thought it was funny your name is Noodles and brought up weiners - we used to call a guy in high school noodle dick. But that was kinda an inside joke for me.

Most people seem to get banned because of politics but I haven't really seen any in the recent thread before the guy said he was surprised others weren't being banned. I just figured he felt your comment was crude and ban worthy since nothing else seemed to come close to crossing any lines. Because, you know, some people just can't take a joke. At least you weren't asking about sniffing seats

I would assume the 4Runner mpg's will be very close to the Land Cruiser, I get this with my 4Runner. Plus, our 5th gen's have a lot less to go wrong with them.

Considering the Land Cruiser is hybrid only, the 4runner non-hybrid will probably be less than this.

Although, I think Toyota said the hybrids are set up to give more power, not better MPG. So maybe I’m wrong, and maybe the non-hybrids will have better fuel economy because they’re a lot lighter. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.
