You're probably talking about fuel economy, not emissions. Which, agreed, there isn't much improvement in fuel economy.

Emissions standards are related to the level of pollutants in the exhaust, or the quality of the air. That's the driving force behind the small turbo engines; it's easier to make them burn more cleanly while still making the same power as the larger engines (more complete combustion).

I was surprised they put the 2.4T in the 4Runner and LC.

I was thinking they would do a single turbo version of the 3.4L for each paired with a hybrid for certain trims.

I fairness, the LC250 is hybrid only, and a lot of the driveability complaints seem to stem from an unrefined transition between engine only and engine+electric drive.

My dad has a 24 Highlander with this engine (non-hybrid). It actually feels quite smooth and pulls very nicely in that application. Let’s see how they fare in a 4runner. I think it will take a while for enough owners to give their real impressions of non-hybrid 4runners before we really know how good the non-hybrids engines will be.

Doesn’t the Highlander weigh quite a bit less than a 4Runner or LC?

Yes, that’s why I think we should wait till there are enough “real” 4runner owners out there before we really know how it works in the 4runner application. Personally I’m mostly interested in the non-hybrid drivetrain. Then we’ll have to see how it does when it’s loaded up with all the goodies.

Once you get into hybrid, it gets kind of hard to judge the gasoline engine. Since all the software magic can easily result in these engine feeling better, or worse than it actually is. For example, I heard there’s the possibility that the engine in the LC could be throttled back to protect the drivetrain components. If that’s the case, then we won’t really ever be able to get an impression of the engine. But we would be able to know that the rest of the drivetrain components were not properly engineered for the application.

    I guess the base model SR5 for $43k is a 2wd?

My prediction is that once you add more aggressive tires and fill it up with gear and people that the mpg at highway speeds will be no better than a 5th gen and it won’t feel any more powerful.

The testers of the 24 "LC" are already reporting they are having a hard time getting over 20mpg with the hybrid system even with street tires and driving economically. The chance of it being more fuel thirsty than a 5th gen when loaded down is...significant.

60k for a "Sport" is absolutely ridiculous.

Also, such a useless trim in general.

TRD Sport was the budget option for people who wanted a Limited but couldn't finance that last 5-7k on their credit.

Now it costs more than a 22 GX460.

In case you haven't seen it, Cammisa's review of the new LC is absolutely savage. Pull no punches savage. This does not bode well for anyone holding out hopes for the 6th Gen 4R. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlhSgUh_6VY

I can confirm the MPG advertised for the LC250 is almost unobtainable, disappointed to say the least.

I'm sorry to hear that. I had high hopes for the hybrid system since Toyota has more or less perfected it incrementally improving it for about 25 years now.

I’m not surprised. The city mpg for my 2024 Tacoma is 18. Slightly better than my 4Runner.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
Cheers and a Happy New Year!

the creators of the CAFE and emissions standards know exactly what they are doing, all part of the plan.

The voters have been blind to it while bickering on the internet on which accessories are best for _____.

They used the tnga f platform on all their models and wanted to go the cheapest route possible to maximize profit reliability and quality are no longer are priority to Toyota but profit is. Just go check out the new Tacoma it’s 100 percent identical to the 4Runner interior included you’ll see how cheap and janky the build quality feels same goes for the Land Cruiser such a shame

The motor downgrade the 3rd gen taco got didn't dissuade buyers so it's only logical Toyota pushes the new Taco motor to the 4R and LC250, figuring the name plates and still being made in Japan will allow buyers to feel some sense of superiority paying GX prices for Taco drivetrain and interior.

The planners at Toyota are probably right about it too.

I'm aware of the sharing of parts.

That's why the 3.4L made sense to me in the Taco, 4Runner and LC. Offer it as a single turbo and the Tundra, GX, and Sequoia get the twin turbo. Maybe there wouldn't have been enough of a difference in hp/torque.

Haven't sat in a new tacoma but I have sat in the new LC. It didn't feel cheap or janky.

It’s crazy. A better use of $60K would be to buy another manufacturers SUV or truck for $40K and use the other $20K to buy a camper, boat, side by side, etc.

in what universe do you see them putting the same motor as the J300, LX600 and LS500 into the Taco?

Go sit in a new Taco.

you are not making sense. the Taco must get a lower tier motor than their LX/LS lines. Your idea is akin to expecting a 6.2 liter V8 in the Colorado.
