    Hey guys.

Has anyone noticed that the interior build quality kind of sucks? So far Ive had the steering wheel plastic break and the second row door light covers just fall out. Its just my wife and myself and we never even use the back doors. The plastic on the steering wheel cover just cracked and i am beyond myself how that even happens. It just seems like the build quality/materials could have been better. Yes, both of my repairs were easy, it just seems like there would be better build quality. This is my first 4runner and I absolutely love it. I guess I could look at the bright side and know the engine and trans are both solid.

To answer your question, no such issues on my 2022. I understand your frustration and I hope you have no more of those issues.

No interior quality (or exterior quality) issues or complaints on our 2022 SR5 Premium 4WD.

According to the decal placard on the driver’s door jamb, ours was built “04/22” (April, 2022)

And wifey and I are in our late 60s, so no kids in our vehicle to beat the crap out of things either. And no pets. I expect this entire vehicle to last me the rest of my driving days.

Sorry to hear you have some minor sounding issues. They can probably be easily corrected for, and probably will never repeat. I suppose anything man-made can be subject to some bug-a-boos at times.

Did you buy your ‘22 from new, or used? There’s a possibility, if you purchased used, that someone previously had those areas you mentioned taken apart for some reason, and then they re-installed them incorrectly and broken or damaged something.

If you’ve already corrected your issues, I don’t think I’d worry too much going forward. Enjoy the best-built vehicle on the planet.

thank you. Yes, both were very easy fixes. If those are the only issues I have to deal with, I am blessed. I love my 4Runner.

its funny you said that about hopefully being your last car. I am hoping for the same. We love to travel and in 2 years the rig has 77k miles. The only other issue I have and its common are the camber or caster bolts. Those seized so its impossible to get an alignment. Its not a regional issue (salt) I guess it is just a very common issue. Was quoted $350 to repair it.

My steering wheel top has degraded but that's about the only issue I have in my 19.

We live in central TX. The Texas Sun is brutal. We use windshield Sun shades in both our vehicles when parked outdoors. (This is whenever we’re away from home. We keep our vehicles parked in our garage at all times when we are home.)

In addition to using the windshield Sun shade on mine, I also keep and use a white towel in my T4R and drape it over the steering column / steering wheel when I have to park out in the Sun. Over-kill you say? Whelp….. That’s just me. lol!

I use a sun shade when parked but still happened. I need ceramic tint on my windows.

That’s probably a good idea to put a towel over the wheel in the sun. I have seen so many steering wheels discolored and worn even in MI when I looked at used vehicles

Hey here’s a little tid-bit for y’all- I forget now where I read this, but I’ve indeed read somewhere that hand sanitizer (the alcohol) will wreck leather steering wheels over time. So don’t have your hands WET with hand sanitizer and go using your leather covered steering wheels! And of course, don’t USE hand sanitizer (alcohol) to clean your steering wheels! Pass this info on to your spouses if this type of thing may be a concern to you.

This has been a public service announcement. Lol!

Thanks! Good advice. I guess that’s one positive of not having a wife or girlfriend

Mom suggested it as a measure to reduce how hot it is when getting in but with a sunshade usually used I forgot about that until this thread

So far on my 2021 I haven’t had much issue other than the plastic trim that the headrest slides into seemingly a little higher than the rest of the seatback. (so there’s a slight gap)

I don’t know what happened with your 2022. 70,000 miles later, not a single “build quality” issue on our 2020.

No issues like that on my '22. Just the known paint issues which were repaired under warranty. And the creaky driver's seat trim which is bad in cold temps. Keeping my '22 for the long haul.

No issue on my 22. If anything I find the interior of great quality compared to most modern cars.

And I don’t baby my 4R as I have used it in the snow, skiing, off-roading, camping, and I have dogs

Not Toyota specific, but plastics in all auto manufacturing have steadily declined in quality and durability for the last 15+ years.

interior plastic panels incredibly scratchy. even slightest nail contact leave a mark. I think this is a compromise between mechanical reliability and cost-saving policy. scratched interior - and the owner wants to buy another Toyota. To bad Toyota management changed for the younger generation. The new platform may have better plastic, as of reliability it remains to be seen. 5th is the last.

I put one of these U-Haul furniture cloths over a WT liner to prevent the plastic wheel wells from getting all scratched up. It seems to keep stuff from sliding and a bit more quiet too without stuff bouncing around as much. For me it works, depends what you want to keep back there I guess

The ONLY issue I have with the interior of my 22 4R is the godawful black color that shows every bit of dust and makes me feel like I'm in a tomb!

Ceramic tint is amazing. I did not do it on my Tacoma, but decided to bite the bullet on my 4Runner. Way cooler than regular carbon, and even easier to see out of which is nice when it is dark outside.

Yeah I messed up and got regular tint on my side windows. I just need to pony up the funds.

When I did my Tacoma, I did not know any better. The shop simply asked me if I want carbon or ceramic, and the price difference. When I did the 4Runner, the shop was great and explained the differences to me and educated me on the benefits.

I have been using the same guy for years on different vehicles. He does an awesome job but I don't think he messes with ceramic.

Edit: Looks like he does now.
