285/70R17 C Load Falken Wildpeak AT4W

Hi friends!

I wanted to make a quick post for anyone considering the 285/70R17 C Load Falken Wildpeak AT4Ws. I drive a 2022 ORP with Bilstein 6112/5160 shocks, medium-duty coilovers, BMC, and a Gobi roof rack. My previous set of tires was the 285/70R17 C Load KO2s, which lasted me about 55,000 miles and served me well. Before that, I ran 275 KO2s.

Since I have an upcoming road trip to the Seattle area in a few weeks, I decided it was time for some new tires. Like many of you, I started researching and came across the Falken Wildpeak AT4Ws. I’d seen a lot of great feedback on the AT3Ws and decided to give the new version a shot. One non-negotiable for me was a strong sidewall for off-road protection.

Living in Southern California, I frequently head to the mountains for some wheeling, and while the KO2s handled everything I threw at them, I wanted to try something different. I was especially intrigued by the AT4Ws' performance in rain and snow, which sealed the deal for me. Another major factor was the AT4Ws' 65,000-mile warranty, which gave me extra peace of mind compared to other options.

I picked up a set for $280 per tire, totaling just over $1,700 out the door, including the spare.


Initial Impressions
The moment I got the rig back from the shop, I noticed how heavy these some-bishes are. At 65.4 lbs per tire compared to the KO2s' 51 lbs, the difference was immediately noticeable. I also had some rubbing at full lock on the front bumper side.

I’ll admit, I had some instant buyer’s remorse because of how heavy they felt... at first.

I called Evans Tire, and they were super helpful, offering to let me switch to something lighter. I considered the AT4Ws in 275/70R17 or 255/80R17, both of which weigh 58.1 lbs. However, the 255/80R17s come with the Duraforce sidewalls in E Load, while the 275s have a standard sidewall.

Despite the weight savings, and due to the lack of 4runners with AT4Ws'in 255's out there, I stuck with the 285s because I wasn’t a fan of the narrow "pizza cutter" look of the 255s I did see out there. Sure, I could add some spacers or buy some wheels with an offset, but I rather just save that money towards gas lol. I know there’s plenty of data showing the skinnies are just as capable, I personally prefer the wider stance. Plus, my mileage reimbursement and car allowance from my job helped justify my decision.

Performance So Far
The AT4Ws have been very quiet on the road, which is a pleasant surprise given their aggressive tread. I’ve noticed about a 1 MPG drop, going from 16 MPG to 15 MPG, but that was expected with the added weight. They do look badass though

I appreciate your review . I’m getting ready to replace a set of LT265 C load KO2s on TRD Pro wheels

I was primarily looking at the P285/70 Toyo AT3s which weigh about the same as my current KO2s. But also looking at the LT255/75 C-load KO2s. Again weight is about the same (46lbs-ish).

according to tire rack, the 255/75 KO2 is only about a 1/2” narrower and 1/2” bigger than the 265/70. They’re about 1/2” smaller than the 285 Toyos, but actual designed for the 7” wheel, and clearance should not be an issue.

I have Falken AT3s on my Tundra, and really like how they ride. That weight tho…

Actually I believe it is the only AT tire of that size that is available in a C load

I would have gone with the P loads, but I didn't want to risk them tearing on the trails. I too considered Toyo's, but heard iffy things about them. I'll see if I give them a shot on my next set. At least your Tundra has a little more "umph" lol. I'll probably get a regear down the road.

You’re right! I meant to type “C load instead of E” but it doesn’t matter anyways because I just realized you were talking about sidewall rather than load range

 

All good! Yup, I wasn't too concerned about load cause my shocks do a decent job with making the ride comfortable.

 

I bought the exact same tires, c load in 285/70/17. I ordered new tires in less than 1k miles because of how dog shit these are in the snow. Coming from AT3Ws I had high expectations and was majorly let down. Replaced them with Mickey Thompsons Baja Boss ATs and they are night and day better in snow conditions.

 

That’s interesting. I have the AT4Ws, same size and load. I’ve used KO2s, RT Trails, and now these. My RT Trails were the least impressive.

 

The TFL Off-road YouTube channel recently did a snow test of the AT4Ws vs KO3 vs Firestone XT. The AT4s were significantly worse than the others, with almost a 100' greater stopping distance from 30mph.

Meanwhile, the Firestone and K03 test results were very close, with the XT accelerating a tad quicker, but K03 stopping a few feet shorter.

Surprising results because the AT3Ws were supposed to be so good, perhaps the change is a result of the new rubber compound designed to last longer.

Also, 65lbs for a 285 is madness. Why are these tires so heavy???

That’s good info. Little late for me but hopefully can save someone else. After my countless issues with balancing and the lack of traction on wet pavement with my KO2s, I probably won’t ever buy BFGs again. But I’ll enjoy my +100 foot stopping distance.

 

I bought the Falken A/T4W 285/70R17 on my 21 4r trd pro this past summer. It is heavier than the other mainstream tires and it may -1mpg but if you've ever driven a truck with other mods or bigger tires, the feel of the climb is not as bad as others may claim. No one buys a 4runner to save on gas lol. No perfect tire but these new Falken A/T4w imo is the thiccest and most functional a/t all-rounder on the market. Just enjoy the ride haha

 

I am getting my Dobinsons put on today and am agonizing over which tire to get. Love the look of the 285 Falken but damn that 67 pounds for C seems insane. Ten pounds more than the ko3 in C. Ack! I need to make up my mind. Worried about the wet performance of ko3 living in PNW.

 

The AT4W is fantastic in wet conditions. The weight comes from the beefy sidewall. It's worth it imo.

 

Looks awesome! I'm not worried about MPG but mainly how much power it saps. I live in a mountainous region. I guess I just need to learn how to step on the gas a little harder.

 

I have the Falken Wildpeak A/T4W in stock size SL 265/70R17. Previously had Michelin A/T 2 in same category. They are 5+ lbs heavier than the Michelins and I’m getting 2 MPG less. Plus, as they age, they are getting louder. But I do like the way the Falkens perform.

 

I run them in 275, going on year two. I would be curious as to how much weight was needed to "balance" them in 285. It's been a struggle with the 275's. As posted above, they have gotten much louder. They almost sound like a mud terrains on the highway, making me look at replacing them. They are wearing well and still have plenty of tread on them. They work well in all weather conditions, just loud.

 

I love my Wildepeak AT3's. Was going to get the AT4's. Snow performance is priority #1 for me, and I found that the AT4's are iffy in snow. I have spent a lot of time researching tires in the last 6 weeks. I want a 255/80 17 and was surprised that not every tire manufacturer makes one. Mickey Thompson Baja Boss was at the top of my list based on the snow reviews, but those are a 255/85 tire and I'd need a BMC for them to fit. I'd get the Goodyear Ultra Terrains if they came in an E-rated tire. They only come in SL. I settled on the Goodyear Duratrac RT because I have a set of those on my Silverado.

 

a good tune helps a lot. I have the OTT tune and it made a hell of a difference. I was very skeptical at first but I’m a huge advocate of them now

 

Actually LT285/70R17 C AT4W has not gain much weight. It was just over 1lbs. But they are true 33in now. I think this is the only Load C with 33in. All other 285s 33in or 33in+ are Load Es.

Are you planning to trim the front fender to prevent the rubbing? I recently bought the same size tire in the KO3 and had the fender rubbing as well. Trimming the fender is very simple and you can do it with a utility knife. This is how I did it, starting at 6:26 in the video.

 

I’m trying to find a place with 285/75/17 at4ws in stock. Tire rack is out of stock. Want to get them in C load. If I can’t find them I’ll be getting the same size in the KO3 but they’re E load unfortunately.

 

I was tire shopping a few months ago and made a table (using Discount/America's Tire site) noting sizes and weights.

Here's some test results from YouTuber TFLoffroad snow comparison video.. I based my decision to skip the Wildpeaks for my next tire based on the video and results. The stopping distance was just too extreme. The results didn't pass the smell test, but I could not find any info to refute them. After many hours of poking 'round the net, I decided that I'll get Goodyear Duratracs.

So do I trust a frequent U-Tuber who has a pretty good following or the Joe Lunchbox that shows real world results. Duratracs are a lot more expensive than the AT4's.

 

i saw this video before and still would choose Falken over the other 2 tires. I bet I could make the other 2 tire brands look bad and the Falkens look stellar if I wanted to. Wouldve been nice to repeat the results with another driver or another vehicle.

 

Where are KO3s available in C load. Where I am I'm told they are only available in E, at least until later this year.

 

They are available in C load in the 285 size.
