What is the story with the 2.7 Ford motor? I am not aware of this.

Probably because they start nickeling and diming you after 100k.

I think a Ranger Raptor would be awesome but I wouldn't own one much past 100k.

Why I trade around 70-80k mi.When I can still get good trade $$$ & not have to worry about break downs.

My opinion is that Toyota's start this somewhere around 200k.

4runner or tacoma. If you can afford a 65k truck you can afford an 80k truck. If you can't, you shouldn't be buying a 65k in the first place and stick with something old and used.

I'm a lot older than most on here, but, in 1980, for my 16th birthday I purchased a 1979 Ford F150 XLT, 2 tone paint, sliding rear window, am/fm radio , a/c and white spoke wheels. I paid $6000. The prices today are ridiculous.

    Nope.

I'm with you on these prices. I just have to shake my head when I hear some of these numbers thrown around as commonplace.

I agree, to an extent. $15K is still a lot of money.

But, If you're already spending $65K, but the truck you really want is $80K, you should definitely get the $80K truck.

When I bought my 4Runner, I got the trim I wanted, with the features I wanted. I could have saved a few thousand by getting a different trim, or skipping KDSS. But, why would I spend that kind of money on something I don't really want?

Please define a "few thousand". 3k? 5k? 15k? I agree you should get the things you want, but that might mean waiting. I would not have purchased a 4runner without the OR package, but I didn't get or care about Premium. Certainly not a Pro. But if I had wanted those features I would have had to budget for it. And waited. Otherwise this is how people end up with 96 and 108 month loans. To me 65 to 80 is a big jump.

Just googling it, it looks like the SR5 premium was about $3K less than the ORP. And, KDSS was around $1800-ish. But, it wouldn't make sense to spend ~$35K on something I didn't really want.

And, yeah, $15K is a lot of money. But, spending $65K on a vehicle that you don't really want is insane. I'd rather wait a little longer than settle.

From what I can tell it’s a fine motor but IIRC the 2.7T EB and 5.0 went to an wet/oil-bathed oil pump belt instead of the usual chain or gears for the 2018 and 2021MY’s respectively. (?)

Unless it’s recently changed I think the 3.3 and the 3.5T are still using a classic gear/chain drive.

So far they haven’t been stripping teeth and clogging up the oil pickup or outright failing like the infamous 1.0T EB’s wet oil pump belt - to their credit.

But the fact is what was once an engine lifetime component (and not just the weasel “warranty lifetime”) is now a maintenance item.

It’s something like every 10 years, 150k miles but don’t quote me - note that the 1.0 belts were failing far earlier than the maintenance interval but the truck engines don’t seem to have followed suit as of now so they’re probably built better.

I wouldn’t be complaining so much if it was reasonably easy to inspect and get at them like a timing belt but they’re often buried in there to bend one over with labor.

(cough Duramax 3.0 cough - it’s been reliable as far as I can tell but wet oil pump belt replacement when due is a transmission-out job, the others probably aren’t so bad but you’re likely pulling the timing components on the way to get at it.)

Edit: I think my issue boils down to this change effectively and artificially limiting the upper lifespan of these engines as when it’s up there and needs a few thousand in work, why not buy another?

For sure. But, if I hit the lottery, I'd probably import a 70 series Landcruiser for shenanigans. :D

It is indeed a big jump. Over 20% cost increase. For someone that is already pushing to close at 65k, expecting someone to drop another 15k is wrong.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Just started looking at this. I just watched a TFL Ike Gauntlet video and he calls it the best mid size as of right now with this engine. Obviously though not a long term review. I have to say the aesthetics look so much better on 2024/2025 vs the earlier rounded models. I may need to see how one fits in the garage next to the 4R

I guess I'll never get with the times. I paid $41k OTD for my OR in 2019, and that was only due to being able to sell 2 other vehicles. When numbers like $65k, and for only $15k more, you can get "what you really want", get tossed around as doable, there's no new vehicle in my future, nor do I care.

What is going on in this world if $15K isn’t a big deal and paying $65K-$80K for a pickup truck is normal? o_O

$65k is the starting price for the highest trim Tacoma.

The lowest trim starts at $32k.

For a mid sized truck. My son recently purchased a GMC Sierra 1500 Denali, the msrp was $85k, after rebates and incentives he paid a little over $62k. His company does business with the dealer, so I don't know if that helped.

$23k off the MSRP is a fantastic deal! It would be hard to pass that up.

Yeah I'm with you, I don't relate to the idea of 15k being tossed around like pocket change.

I paid 25 for my 4R used, and I thought even that was a substantial amount of money for a vehicle.

Counter point: unless one already has the cash lined up, and extra 15k financed at current rates over 60 months means it costs 25k or so paid over the life of the loan.

Not sure how that's a counterpoint.

I said that $15K is a lot of money. Obviously even more if you're borrowing it.

But, that doesn't change the fact that spending $65K on a vehicle you don't really want is dumb.

Mine is near 186k and I feel like it's about to start nickel and diming me.

I'm quite frustrated with it lately because I'm starting to lose the "get in and drive it anywhere" type trust.

Plus, being in New England it's tough keeping older Toyotas nice.

How is the frame on that vehicle after East coast winters etc? Just curious if you have treated it and how the years were on the frame ?

Yes, I keep after the frame and it looks good, it's just everything else attached to it that gets rusty.

It was already 6 years old when I got it 6 years ago, so unfortunately I didn't get to start from scratch.

Nobody really said anything about that though, with the exception of Turd PRO vs Raptor, and those are different vehicles.

Buying the Turd PRO when you really want a Raptor may be dumb, but buying a 65k Lariat when you really wanted an 80k Platinum would just be sticking to a realistic budget.

That's exactly what I was responding to earlier. Why would anyone spend $65K on a Tacoma if they really wanted an $80K Raptor?

As far as setting for a Lariat rather than a Platinum, that's up to the individual. If the extra features are not that important to you, then buy the cheaper trim.

But, spending $65K to settle for a vehicle seems bananas to me. I'd rather buy used, or wait until I can afford what I want.
