Its nice looking. Thats a crap ton of weight behind it, far less than anybody with one of those will ever tow. Would have been much better in manual mode, it really started losing MPH when it started bogging down into the 3000rpm range towards the top and wouldnt downshift. Kinda crazy he put it at 60mph and put it on cruise control.
I've towed up the Ike before and its a pretty big hill that most people dont understand until they are towing something heavy. Its a big long climb and it certainly tests your vehicle. Would have certainly been in manual mode going up and down to control RPM, thats what i do anyway.

The 5th gen 4Runner's reputation surpassed even the LC200's. But Toyota ruined that reputation with the 6th gen. GX 550 should have been the 6th gen 4Runner

 

the 6th gen gas only 4R *could* continue to shine in its own ways if

1: the 4 banger turns out to be as bullet proof as the 1GR. Ford is doing alright with their 2.3 EB used in Rangers and Broncos, so there is no reason why the 2.4 in the Toyota can;t be well made in similar roles.
2: the 8 speed gear box proves to be as durable as the 5 speed in the 5th gen, being 2 less gears than the 10 speed in the GX550. there are a lot of good 8-10 speed gearboxes out there so it is very doable as long as Toyota doesn't pull a Ford 10r80/100/140
3: comparatively less electronics compared to the GX allowing it to be less troublesome once out of warranty.
4: doesn't price creep to be as expensive as the LC Prado if someone wants crazy extreme space age features like power seats or dusk sensing headlights.

I won't say it's not possible that the 6th goes all of the above but....you know.

Nevertheless we can certainly hope.

I agree but I’m glad that it’s not going to be the 6th gen 4Runner. The used ones can be had without the 4Runner premium tacked on.

 

We will see. The 2.4T has been in BOF application for only 1 model year so far, and Taco's 8 speed transmission is having some teething issues already.

As far as I can remember the 10R80 transmission in the Ford has been okay, so the 2.3EB/10R80 is doing its job in the Ranger/Bronco application pretty well, at least far better than the 2.7EB.

 

Toyota will fix the issues in a year or two. Toyota's quality on a bad day is better than Ford's. Park a Toyota and Ford side by side, open their hoods and the difference is obvious.
I do believe these Toyota turbo motors can rack up big miles if you are on top of maintenance. But the days of abusing and neglecting Toyotas are over.

 

I have a 23 Bronco with the 2.3 Ecoboost. It’s a surprisingly potent engine. I prefer it over the 2.7 issues. Engine sounds weird, but has plenty of power and the 10 speed is great.

If Toyota could provide equivalent performance with the traditional brand reliability, it would be a no brainer, but so far I’m not convinced based on the Tacoma roll out. The obvious cost cutting worries me compared to the Gen 5 4R.

 

I hate how the body on these sound like tin cans. Close any of the doors and the sounds is so hollow and thin.

This is how I feel about my 4Runner vs my '07 Volvo. The Volvo is just so freaking solid, you can really feel the difference when closing the doors.

 

Stopped by the yota dealer today. To sit in the 250 first time.. lol more underwhelming that what I was expecting. Closing the doors - the tinny and rattly sensation was worser than the ‘23 4Runner I had. I tried a couple 250s on the lot, they all felt very shtty
I expect the gx to be the same, build-wise, but will have to stop by the Lexus dealer to verify the its poor build.

Its shtty ground clearance of 8.7 some how still results in awkward egress( I am almost 5’10” with shoes ), where a step would be necessary. Our Subaru ascent with slightly higher ground clearance, has easy ingress/egress.

 

Your anecdote shows that the 8.7 figure really isn't that important after all. It clearly still has plenty of rocker height, it's probably the rear differential that hangs lower on this, which is really not that big of a deal.

 

haha yeah our family "Take the Kids to see Grandma" car is a Crown Victoria. Imagine the contrast opening and closing doors back to back with a 5th gen 4R....


But, here is me making excuses I guess for Toyota, for a high clearance 4x4 with a very high center of gravity like the 4R, perhaps a bit....weight reduced body is more feature than bug...

Those who have driven an 80 or 100 series LC on an off-camber trail will know what I mean.

 

Yeah, Ford has had a lot of issues lately but the 2.3 Bronco is the surprise hit that is flying under the radar right now. I am waiting to see if their reintroduction of the base trim next year yields more realistic savings, if so I am going to put down an order for a 2 door manual base sasquatch again and see if they can do it this time, LOL.

 

I like everything about the GX except the price. I’m also skeptical that Toyota actually fixed the engine problems.

 

The price is going to be a problem when people realize instead of the mid 50s that most GX460s started, the new normal is going to be north of 70k.
