I got banned on some 5th gen 4runner group for supporting someone else’s photo of them hunting with their deer they shot and a rifle in the photo.

Internet people get upset about the oddest things

I would say this forum is about average for activity. Forums are an old concept but still the best place to get actual useful info and help. FB cant compete, but many don't understand the difference.

I designed a fantastic forum platform and advancement system to encourage long term activity, a true forum Of, For and By the People. But the people revolted against freedom and is now a totalitarian oligarchy with little activity.

I think FB groups are just horses of a different color vs. forums like this. I’m active in a few FB groups, primarily Venture Unknown (fantastic organization, highly recommend) & a Georgia 4Runner group. I find those useful for activities like group rides and fairly simple questions. That platform just doesn’t lend itself to more complex things like write ups on how to do an ATF exchange and so on.

I come here for things like that and to offer whatever info and advice I can. Forums like this one, the other 4R site, and the old Xterra Owners Club have taken me from doing little other than oil changes and such to handling anything short of major engine disassembly or dropping the gas tank. And I know I could do even those difficult jobs with enough patience and info from here, but sometimes paying a competent shop just makes sense. I try to pay all that support and kindness forward every chance I get.

FB groups suck. I use it for my Verado outboard since there isn't much dedicated to those out there. But I avoid it unless I have to.

Reddit never used that thing either.

It's not super active. But, there are some good reviews and recommendations. I really need to get on the ball about trying out more of these places. :hungry:

Although I’m a member of LC and GX forums. I don’t like Gen specific forums like 6th gen 4R or 4th Taco.
Still enjoy the TW platform forums but there is less traffic when trying to sell off parts.

Left Facebook 7-8 years ago, it’s glorious. I have to calm my father down and explain most of the crap he reads is fake. He’s also on it for his Jeep and he says those guys are just full blown gatekeeping AHoles.

I get everything I want from here, built out my 4Runner as soon as I got it…learned what I did wrong here and then built it out a second time :)

Actually, I should be in the last category.

I like Facebook (to an extent), but I prefer forums like this for finding information about things. Facebook groups are fine for BS'ing and socializing, but that’s about it.

I even mentioned that I'm in a supper club group, so it should have been clear that I have it.

I'm usually pretty good about scrolling right past things I don't agree with, which helps. I have definitely seen the bad side of social media over there. Sometimes it's wild how divided and hateful people can be over there. Those are the people you have to ignore.

It can be absolutely terrible if you let it. Ot, it can be a nice way to interact with people you don't see on a regular basis. It's really up to the user.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
That's when I deleted mine also. For a few years, people looked shocked when I would tell them "I no longer have a FB account".

Now, with the nasty stigma of FB, when I tell people that I don't have one they smile and reply "Yeah! Me too! Isn't that place awful?"

I hear you on the personal responsibility aspect. As with most things, it is up to the user themselves to use any product responsibly. Social media, motor vehicles, substances, money, and on and on. My wife has an account and I can see it's potential. Her quilt group organize meet ups and one of the better things is we can get info about the area around our cabin. It's such a postage stamp of a village that we can't really even get weather reports and conditions vary widely there due to elevation changes. Also can hear about fires, road out, troublesome bear, etc.

I joined FB under protest. It was the chosen means of communication for my daughter’s little league team. I joined under a pseudonym with a burner email address and never made a single post. I haven’t looked at it in 7 years.

I can add that I have met in person way more people using overlandbound. In fact all the guys I go out with are on that and only a few have FB. We use it to organize our drives and monthly meetups. A couple bounce in and out here.

    Similar story here.

We have a good sized group of regulars from here and Tacomaworld that get out 5-6 times per year. It's been a ton of fun learning what these things are capable of, camping, and BS'ing with a great group of people over the last few years!
