Loud ass blow offs are annoying.

I think its 10x better to hear that S/C whine. And best part is no one can hear it all the time.

I called Magnuson this morning to inquire about their S/C system for the 2020 4Runner. The current system they have "will" fit, but they do not have a tune for the ecu on the 2020.
Just thought I would pass the info along. We will probably do this when it becomes available. The person I talked to said they hoped to have it released by late summer.

In this application the blower makes the most sense. Speaking from experience, I've run roots style s/c, prochargers and turbos, they each have pros and cons and mostly depends on the application that it's going on.
Of course that's just my "opinion".... lol....

Very late to this thread, but what the hell. I have had the Magnuson Supercharger for nearly 65k on my ‘19 4Runner. Best money I have spent. But … it is not a rocket. It just feels right. It is still a 4Runner but I no longer worry about hills, passing or towing. MPG: the response stating the science of ratios of air/gas is 100% spot on. This means you suck more gas in the city and save gas on the highway (why if ratios are the key? There is no anxiety getting up to highway speed so you don’t have to open it up all the way to merge and then back off sooner). On average I am about the same as my buddy with a standard ‘20. Most important point, for all the talk of tuning and/or warranty: there are still a ton of Toyota dealers who are also Magnuson dealers. I bought mine through the dealer and had them install it. All covered under the Magnuson and Toyota warranties and it gets tuned and checked with each service. Only issue I have had is one belt was offkilter and wore poorly. It was replaced and the angles were realigned during dealership service. Bang. Done. Do it.

I too went the Magnuson rout with my 2023 (5,500 miles on the 4Runner so far). I also have the Banks pedal Monster installed to adjust the throttle sensitivity. I couldn't be happier. It still drives sedate enough that a granny would feel comfortable but lay into the throttle and it rolls in the boost ever so smoothly, all the while exponentially increasing the boost you get. It begins to roll in about 2,200 so no gnarly burn outs from a stop, but holy hell, once the RPM's climb higher it's a night and day difference over stock. Also mostly gone are the annoying downshifts going up hill that scrub speed before catching back up.

When it's on the highway and I want to pass quickly, the supercharged 4Runner makes it happen fast. Three quarter throttle followed by a downshift followed by merging back in front of the vehicle I was passing. High horsepower race fast? Nope, but it sure is easy to live with and puts much more horsepower/torque right where you need it most. @80-82 I get about 14.5 and on country roads going 62 I get closer to 17 and I'm okay with that.

This happened a couple days ago: I was glad my adult son was with me on a drive last Sunday. It was just us and a new f-150 V8 with what was obviously an aftermarket exhaust. We both stopped at a red light with no other vehicles in sight when out of the corner of my eye I could see him edging up and loading the brakes. I grinned cause I felt like I was 18 again, lol. As soon as the light turned green we both nailed it. While it takes some RPM before the Magnuson really starts to kick in, he never got in front of me and his distance from me in the rear view mirror only widened. I slowed down a block later to make a turn and he slowed down even more. I think he was embarrassed that a lowly 4Runner cleaned house! I'm guessing he didn't tell anyone about it but I did :)

    I want one SO badly.

    Price too much.

I'm in at $4K if that ever happens. I can install and tune myself.

It's def a luxury item price. The out the door price from Magnuson with tax and shipping to Michigan was 8k. I did the install myself but it's got sticker shock for sure. I don't regret it.

@engineer90 It does have the supercharger whine. It starts at 2,200 RPM and gets more pronounced the higher you go. Puts a smile on my face every day :)

Hey guys, first post in this group. I’ve been on some of the other 4Runner and Tacoma groups for a long time, just never made it over here. I have a turbocharged 3rd gen 4Runner, and would like to add a 5th gen to the stable in the near future. So naturally I’ve been researching my forced induction options for the 1GR. Actually having a turbocharged 4Runner, I’d like to dispel some of the myths floating around in this thread.

Drive a gas truck that was previously supercharged and is now turbocharged and you’ll understand.

This is a common myth that never seems to die. People who have never messed with turbos instinctively spout off about how they only provide power at high RPMs, which isn’t true. You can absolutely size the turbo so that it spools almost instantly off idle. I have a GTX3071 turbo, which would generally be considered a smaller turbo for my 5vz (3.4L V6). I’m currently running 7psi, and the turbo spools up quick. The turbo is great for towing my boat around and up steep grades.

It’s ready to accept boost. The engine doesn’t necessarily care where the boost comes from, whether it be from a turbocharger or a supercharger.

Forced induction absolutely reduces the life of any motor. To state otherwise is completely naive. Luckily Toyota engines are so well engineered and built that they still last long enough that other parts of the vehicle tend to wear out first.

Because in most head to head comparisons, turbo outperforms a supercharger. More power potential with a turbo than there is with a supercharger, with the turbo still operating more efficiently. There’s less parasitic drag on the motor with a turbo, because a supercharger is being driven directly off the crankshaft resulting in more stress on the engine, less power to the wheels, and decreased fuel economy when compared with a turbocharger. And going turbo on my 3rd gen was cheaper than buying the Magnuson, albeit more labor intensive to install.

The powdered metal rods say differently. The Xrunner crowd were first to start running the turbos and finding the limits of the 4.0 engine. White the block, crank, cylinders, oiling, heads, crank bearing caps, are all BEEFY and obviously over engineered, the powdered metal rods are the weak link. Detonation at 6psi and you get a peek-a'boo and you can see inside the engine block. Perfect tuning will allow 11-12ish psi on a turbo before you start breaking rods. I think its less about the pressure they hold under boost or on the ignition side of the stroke, i honestly think its the rods pulling apart as the piston comes to TDC on the exhaust stroke. Having to rapidly slow the piston down and bring it back down in the stroke is weakening the rods, then the cylinder pressures at higher boost levels breaks them. Whole lotta guys windowed their blocks at that 12psi range. Only one or two ever got to 14psi.

Funny story, back in the 2nd gen Tacoma days with the 2.4 2RZ and 2.7 3RZ, these engines were bulletproof, forged crank, forged rods, heavy cast pistons, these engines handled 14-16 psi without even breaking a sweat and MANY times had guys pushing 20+ with thicker multi layer head gaskets and studs and an otherwise completely stock engine. I had a basically stock 3RZ with sheet metal intake, multi layer head gasket, studs, and ran 16psi on low boost and got 24psi on the dyno before i roasted the spec stage 3 clutch. My low boost was about 330whp and while tuning at 24psi i had just broke 400whp and the clutch let go and wouldnt hold anymore. I had big Venom injectors, big Venom twin turbo supra fuel pump, rising rate fuel pressure regulator, and had a modified AEM stand alone from a Supra running everything. Guy named Marshall who was big big into tuning Supras was doing the tuning for me. The engine would have likely been at 500 to the crank on basically stock engine with studs and head gasket.

You get 10psi of boost on the 4.0 v6 1GR-FE and you're gonna be around that 340whp range and your rods are on BORROWED TIME. One hiccup with detonation on a low humidity cool day on an uphill climb at low throttle percentage, get a lean spot in the tune, little detonation and BOOM.

If it was pre engineered for a blower then it would have the blower on it.

I mean, within limits. Obviously you can’t go throw 30psi at it and expect it to hold together. But it’s not like the early 3rd gen 4Runners or 1st gen Tacomas (circa 1996ish) where when the ECU figured out the engine was in boost it went haywire and pulled timing like crazy. Or like the 2UZ where the thin connecting rods snapped under boost, hence why TRD discontinued the supercharger for it.

I’d look into a ProCharger… you can add a blow off/waste gate to this… simple install and reliable… even comes with a tune. I’m a big fan of centrifical s/c’s ran them back in the day on FoxBody’s
