hybrid platinum with full time 4wd vs limited gas with full time 4wd

 

Love the look of the all black Sport Premium 4wd. Not a fan of the black fenders on the Off-road. Looks too much like my truck.

They definitely have something for everyone.

 

Did Toyota remove A-TRAC on Limited? LC has full time 4wd, central and rear lock, with A-TRAC, and it’s $3750 cheaper than Limited. I hope those luxury upgrades r worth it.

 

“Something for everyone” yet I honestly want none of that even if it was 20 or even 30k dollars cheaper I still have zero desire to buy

if I was forced to buy a brand new vehicle tomorrow I would buy domestic for the first time in my life

 

It’s definitely worth verifying what each trim level has and does not have. The center locker on full time transfer cases is no longer standard. You have to go to higher trim packages if you want the same transfer case that currently comes on 5th gen Limited. Who knows if a-trac is the same thing.

Tacomas come with different CV axles depending on the trim, and it doesn’t seem like that’s widely known, or explained by Toyota. Mechanically adjusted seats vs power seats is another thing.

It seems like a lot of how toyota is packaging the different trim levels has changed, so you can no longer assume the different trim levels are optioned out the same way as before.

 

Total pain the ass but you have to use the Spec compare tool on Toyota's website.
But you can only compare 3 models at a time. And there are so many trims, two diff engines, +2WD vs 4WD

On the Tacoma it was mentioned in videos that A-Trac now works behind the scenes in all 4WD trims. And it's accomplished with a vacuum brake booster on gasser models now because the turbo engine has a vacuum pump running full time, so there's good clamping power even when applying throttle.

LC got neutered with the small rear diff, so it's torque-managed to hell in software and feels sluggish despite its 465 ft-lb of torque on paper. Hopefully the 4R takes after the Tacoma in that department...

 

All these little surprise differences between trims and models. I’ve complained before that the LC250, the 4runner, the tacoma, and the lexus variant was the same vehicle with different clothes. But slowly that’s proving itself to be untrue. The problem is that the differences are more hidden, not marketed, and unexpected (like a smaller diff and protective power management…in the LC, of all the trims)

I was surprised when I found out that a jeep wranglers have very little mechanical similarities across trims. I took it for granted because it seems 5th gen 4runners were basically the same thing across the trim levels minus the rear locker and the transfer cases.

Buying the newer toyotas is really going to take some research in order to know what you’re getting.

 

^And that is before you look at LC250 in foreign markets, like a hybrid diesel with DEF tank stuffed between the frame and front driveshaft.

 

On a recent Tinkerer video, he was surprised at the thinner wall thickness of the steel on a lot lof frame components of the new Tacoma, like suspension mounts. He dragged a rear trailing arm mount over a rock and the metal iseemed to curl over a good amount. I’ve dragged mine a time or two and the only thing I noticed was the metal that got worn away, but there was no bending or curling over of the steel.

Have you heard if there are differences in wall thickness of the steel used for the frame on a tacoma vs 4runner, or 4runner vs LC, or LC vs Lexus? That’s an important difference, but I’m getting the suspicion Toyota wouldn’t publish any of those differences, if they exist.

 

^Toyota hasn't stated anything. From outward appearance, the 4Runner, LC, and GX550 can be expected to have the same frame. I say this because parts sharing is very prevalent. For example, the 4Runner LCA is common with the GX550, with a dimple to clear the KDSS sway bar, which isn't offered on the 4Runner.

The Tacoma has a longer frame so the section thicknesses can be different. All the laser-welded doubler reinforcements further make it not apples-to-apples with the SUVs, since the doublers can be at different locations with different thicknesses.

 

They’re all on the tnga f frame/platform including tundra and sequoia obviously this will cause issues from an engineering standpoint but it saves them a shit ton of money

 

It is always good policy to keep domestics on one's radar as long as we don't pay any markups.

The Bronco and Wranglers are looking like a very viable choice as this point until the 6th gen shake down is done.
