That’s impressive. I don’t think I’ve seen a first gen sequoia in quite a while. Most of the ones around here probably rusted away.

I'm not a "no 4-banger, no turbo, no way" guy by any stretch and I would certainly appreciate more low-end torque but what I'm worried about is feeding a few hamsters cocaine and asking them to pull a 5,000 lb sled full time. I want to see a bunch of them do it for a few hundred thousand miles without drama before I sign up.

This is more like giving the hamsters a Red Bull than giving them cocaine. A 2.4 L is a pretty big 4 cylinder. And, an I4 is a stronger design than a V6.

I hear what you are saying. I'm going to be in the "show me" camp for a while to see what reliability and longevity look like in this application. It's more the weight of the vehicle and off-road demands over time that leave me wanting more data.

Not an engineer or anything, but just from a layman’s unscientific seat-o-the-pants common sense point of view, more torque + fewer cylinders = more stress. No? I don’t see how the math works out any other way.

I definitely don't blame people for wanting the engine to prove itself. I guess I'm just more optimistic. That said, I'm not about to run out and buy the first one, lol.

Maybe another way to look at it is fewer cylinders and more main bearings. There will actually be less stress on the main bearings than there was with the v6.

Yeah it would be perfect in a cute Ute rather than a big heavier pig of a 4Runner.

For the most part I really don't have a need nor the desire to roll in to something new just because. I don't like he aesthetics of the 2025 at all. Had they knocked the design out of the park for me I might be tempted, but I don't like it and I'm definitely not feeling the pull to fork out 30 grand just to have something new and shiny. I've only got 26K miles on my 2019 and about 10K in mods in to it with no payment.

I can't argue with keeping the 5th gen. That's the smart move right now, at least until the new drivetrain is proven (or not).

And, I have no arguments about the anesthetics. The pictures are generally not very flattering.

I do wonder what these threads would be like if they had really nailed the design. Maybe if it looked better, people would be more willing to risk it on a new drivetrain. :notsure:

I'm looking forward to seeing some of these things actually get out on the road and see how people really like them. Maybe they'll end up being better than it looks right now.

One of the things I never cared for about my 4th Gen was the larger/taller fender flares and they really doubled down on that whole trend on the 25. That and it's just too over done. It looks like they assigned separate teams to different ends/corners of the car without really sorting out how it all looks put together. Then there's the $$$$

I have mixed feelings about the large unpainted fender flares and cladding on the 4th gen. I can definitely see why some people didn't like the way it looked. But, on the other hand, after 257,000 miles on my 2003, there was hardly a stone chip on it due to all the plastic.:D

And, considering the amount of gravel roads I drove down over all of those years, that's pretty impressive in my book. So, maybe not a big win for aesthetics, but it worked out well for me and my lifestyle.

I would take my 2003 4th Gen back in a heartbeat despite any aesthetic issues for the V8, transfer case and higher quality interior materials. It was a better overall quality build than my 5th Gen IMO.

I still hold a candle for my 2003 also. :D

I'm with you guys that I'm really neither for it or against it. As mentioned above, I'm optimistically in the "show me" stage. As far as looks, I often don't like new designs when they come out and then they tend to grow on me over time. I didn't really like the refreshed 5th, but now happily drive one every day, and hopefully for a couple more decades.

6th gen to me looks like it's aimed at 20-somethings with the design. 5th gen aesthetics cover the ages from 20-70. 6th gen doesn't really look like a vehicle for middle aged people and up.

This is one of my concerns as well. For those of us that make a lot of weekend trips... how's it gonna hold up to doing 80mph for 4-5 hours at a stretch round trip every weekend from May to October?

On the contrary, I feel the new design is quite mature and grown up. It somewhat reminds me of the previous gen Sequoia specially the silhouette.
I am not the fan of the current 5th gen front end. Too many curves and cuts. The OG 10-13 was a looker though.

Not a chance. If I wanted to spend that kind of $$ on a suv, I'd go with a GX550

I guess I've kind of come to terms with the 5th gen front end. Or at least forget about it when I'm driving the thing. I guess this helps alleviate any angst about cutting half of it off eventually for a bumper...
I think nearly all the Japanese car front ends now look like angry Anime cartoon faces. Except Mazda that has a big dumb shit eatin' grin.

I think the limited 6th gen strikes a nicer and more balanced look, because of the painted fender flares and the front end treatment. At least by looking at it in pictures.

It’s the one I’d get if I wanted to get a 6th gen and wanted to spend insane amounts of money.

While not a fan of the change to 4 cylinder since I am old school I look at it this way.

There are a lot more people out there with more money than me so I will let those that “need” the new ride take the gamble and get a new Gen and they will slowly report back here over years to come.

Let someone else put up their cash, they are out there. I am more conservative and stuck with the 5th Gen.

Too poor to buy anything now
I'm not reading 8 pages to catch up but one of my concerns is how that turbo 4 cylinder stands up to pulling a loaded trailer over time.

I’m wondering if that’s some of the intent on their positioning.

If they cost around the same ballpark to crank out (at least the bones), it’s definitely common to pull tricks to push customers up the rung like Ford originally not including Cruise in the base Maverick XL.

What’s the GX550 if not a super fancy trim level here?

While I agree with your equation, the thing is that more stress applies to the pressure in the combustion chamber, piston rings, piston pin, connecting rod and crank pin. It all goes through a single crankshaft on out just like the V6.

Its reasonable to expect that Toyota took this into consideration and designed these components accordingly.
