NEW TO 4 RUNNER

Hello, everybody! I'm from WA, owner of 2016 4runner SR5. I'm concerned about 3 things (please excuse my words, I'm not a native-speaker):
1) fuel tank cap: 4runner doesn't have fuel tank cap lock (from APP "NEXTDOOR", I learned gas siphoned phenomenon took place frequently nowadays), how to lock the fuel tank ? Gas is little money, but if gas is stolen in remote place, that's a great disaster.
2) change of battery: replacement of battery for old cars is easy, just replace the dead one with a new one. But for cars of recent years with more electronic devices, replacement of battery is a little complicated, it is said some cars won't start or some of the electronic devices will be locked, after battery is replaced, people have to go to dealer for solution. Is it true for 4runner?
3) fuel filter: it is a question somebody has asked, but it seems nobody knows. some people think since it is never mentioned, it wouldn't be a problem. But I believe " better safe than sorry " When travelling in remote place, it happens that gas quality is poor and fuel filter is blocked, that would be a trouble.

 

Where are you planning to travel?

2)I have never heard of this before if you get the right replacement battery for your vehicle. The 4Runner uses a 24F size battery.

3)I have never heard of this happening either in the CONUS but I guess it could happen. Could always carry extra gas with you and fill up at a known source of gas before venturing out to your remote location.

Thank U you guys for prompt reply. I went to Toyota dealer this morning and got reply like this: right size battery change does not affect engine normal start and electronic devices proper function. Good! And 2016 4runner has only one fuel filter which stays together with fuel pump in the fuel tank. I was also told by the dealer that the reason why Toyota does not use keyed cap is that keyed cap has the possibility to leak air which might lead to engine works improperly. Anyhow I"ll buy a keyed cap and will use it when and where I feel not safe.

 

When swapping batteries, if you get the new one in quickly (lets say 5-10 minutes), everything will remain the same.

If a battery is unhooked for a longer period (I'm not sure how long), I think the ECU will reset what the transmission has "learned". This isn't a problem. Your ECU will just have to "re-learn" over a period of time. You might see reduced fuel economy for a period. You might also lose some personal settings in the head unit.

At least, that's how it worked in my 2nd gen Tacoma. Can anyone confirm it's the same in the 4runner?

 

Personally I think your over thinking the locking gas cap but I also don't know where you live. I've never heard of anyone locking their gas for a day or a week because they found themselves in a "shady" or that remote a place.

 

Don't forget you have to redo the auto windows up too. Lol

 

I have carista and that is a great obdII app to do those customization

 

I had good luck with it too. Really easy. It was like $20 and you can customize a whole bunch of settings. Door locks, windows, etc.

 

I am using the Stant locking gas cap (model #10504) and it is working fine for my '19 4Runner. No check engine light.
