if they offered a final edition 5th gen with a 6spd manual there would be a line out the door and around the block

So, you're already certain that the new engine won't be reliable?

Meh. I am very happy with the A750 and it's rock solid reliability. I like the way the car care nut described it "there was no effort made to make the transmission smaller or more compact or lighter or more efficient. No, everything was directed at making it stronger".

Sure, if they only offered it at one dealership nationwide.

Remember when Toyota sold a variant of the 4Runner with a 6-speed manual option and then they discontinued it because nobody was buying it? I do.

Yes, but he is equally as certain that a new 8 speed transmission on the 5th gen would have worked flawlessly.

From what I've read on the 4th gen Tacoma threads, the 3rd gen wheels don't fit the 4th gen. I imagine the 5th gen 4R wheels would be the same on the 6th gen...

Why Toyota did this after decades of interchangeable wheels is a mystery.

Do they not fit because of diameter? Or, did they change the lug pattern? Because that would be really stupid, imo!

Overall, in general I am not a fan of a 4x4 that doesn't have a place for a full size spare. Granted, I keep my summer spare in the cargo area because I'm not sure it would fit underneath and I don't really want it down there anyway.

    Center bore is different.

And, only certain model 4th gen Tacos get an actual matching spare tire. A lot of them state "full size spare" on the window sticker, but it's basically a similarly sized 'temporary' spare tire.

I suppose if you’re young and have the $$$ it’s an option but entering my 50s I’m not looking for another car payment. My 2020 will be paid off in a year. Those $$$ will be going into trips and retirement. Of course this is all under the assumption my 5th outlives me.

If you're only 50, and hoping your current vehicle will outlive you, you better take up smoking, and drinking heavily.

So it sounds like no one here but Thatbassguy wants a 6th gen.
I will be looking for a low mileage 5th gen to buy before any of these overpriced new Toyota’s.

I've been following the 4th gen Taco forum for a while, as, like it or not, the 6th gen 4R will have a lot in common with the newest Tacoma, including the power train.

The general consensus is the 4th gen engine is more responsive, the ride is better, mostly due to the coil spring rear vs leaf springs (which are still on some base models), the seats more comfortable, and the tech is better. The smaller gas tank is a common complaint.

These are some of the issues that have sprung up more than once:

    1. Front shock top hat cap breaking or coming off.
    2. Whistling noise after removing air dam. Some trucks have plastic plugs in 4 holes in the LCA, others don't. It seems the lack of these plugs causes the whistling when the air dam is removed.
    3. Seat height adjustment won't stay put. Seats are sinking over time and have to be readjusted.
    4. Thump / bottom out when hitting speed bump.
    5. Truck bed misalignment
    6. Cracked evaporator core leaking onto driver's right foot
    7. Transmission failing and has to be replaced
    8. Stuck in trailer mode. This one's a doozy. 175 posts later, I couldn't figure out what one's supposed to do...
    9. Pro/Trailhunter/Off Road rear quarter panel flares outward in front of the rear fender flare, so driving on gravel roads pretty much directs rock bits directly into that area, pitting the paint on quarter panel and dings up the fender flare.
    10. Rear window (fixed glass) shattered when closing the rear door.
    11. Aftermarket 2.5" lift was contributing factor to CV axle separation

I haven't seen any positive feedback on the Pro suspension seats, only complaints.

There's 2 particular threads that led to a buyback by Toyota - one for a failed transmission, the other for the world's worst paint job. Interesting read. Somewhere in there someone said they know a US Toyota engineer who feels the delay of the 6th gen 4R is affected by Toyota trying to iron out these issues...

Just because I'm arguing with people's reasons for not wanting them doesn't mean that I want one.

You forgot the truck that blew all the oil and seized the engine and the guy is having a terrible time lemon lawing it.
Great job by Toyota working out the kinks before bringing these to market.

There's still a lot of 3rd gen Tacoma owners who swear they'll never go 4th gen, but the sales figures for the 4th gen keep going up, even though a lot of dealer lots around the country have a lot on hand.

Another thing that might affect Tacoma sales is if tariffs on Mexico get implemented - that will get passed on to the end buyer, cost wise. That wouldn't affect 4Rs from Japan, though.

    Geez..

I suppose one could hope that the 4Runner will be a little better, being made in Japan. But, I'm not about to be a guinea pig.

    Damn.

I wouldn't mind more power. But, I'm not trading it for problems!

Plus, I haven't even seen one yet. I really don't know if I like them. I am hoping they will look better in person. But, so far I am really not sure what to think.

I saw a post about this in my local group, somebody bought 4th gen Taco wheels to put on their 5th gen 4Runner and they wouldn't fit. Turns out the inner hub diameter is smaller on the newer vehicles. The bolt pattern is the same, but the wheels won't sit flush with the hub.

It sounds like the wheel studs are a different diameter too. Pretty annoying for people that already have extra/winter sets of Toyota wheels.

This would make sense to resolve the issues before anymore units are sent out. Also, folks tend to forget that fixes on new designs happen all the time. The 3rd gen Taco had transmission issues that require software updates in '16 and '17. The 3vz-fe had a big fat head gasket failure on 2nd gens. (Although some of the members here might not have even been born yet for that one) I vaguely recall a big propeller shaft campaign on the 4th gens. Toyota works through this stuff.

I've only seen a few of the new Tacomas in person, and I know the 6th gen 4R looks a lot like it. Not a fan of the body style personally.

You joke, but we are still driving our 98 Camry that my parents bought new and gave to us when I started commuting to work.

Aside from some cracked interior pieces from my wife refusing to use a sunshade, the interior looks like the day they got it, and the damn thing runs pretty much brand new with 250k miles on the odometer. The only time the engine was ever opened was for a valve cover seal replacement, otherwise original everything including seat fabric that looks like no one ever sat in it.

Unless something unexpected happens we expect to keep that car for another ten years at least.

And that's why some of us would rather stick with what worked for Toyota back when they built Toyotas to Lexus standards.
