i have about 1000 miles on my truck and have been having intermittent squeaky brakes.

Maybe twice a week I'll be rolling through a parking lot slowing down or in stop and go traffic and all of the sudden the brakes squeak terribly loud. And I can make it happen on-demand.

If I ride the brake it will squeak indefinitely. And then after a few minutes, it goes away. Not to be heard for a few days or a week.

Anyone know what could be causing it? When it does happen, it is LOUD.

I went to the dealer today when it started squeaking but by the time I got there it stopped. So I didn't go in. Ha I Figured they would just say they couldn't find anything wrong.

I wonder if it's a moisture thing. It was foggy today. Taking a warm (garaged) truck out in to the cool foggy weather... maybe some condensation? I'll start to pay more attention to when this occurs.

I'm not overly concerned. Mostly just curious.

I'm thinking it's condensation on the calipers or pads. Dependent on humidity and temp... when going from warmer to colder air. And then it stops after a few minutes or as surface temps equalize. Just a guess at this point.

It’s funny I have squeaky rear brakes as well on my 2017 and I was planning on scheduling an appointment to have them checked out. I currently have 31k on my truck and it started about 15 to 20k ago...but the performance hasn’t changed. Now it happens quite often but not consistently during certain conditions.

Mine does this only on first braking in the morning, after it's been sitting for 15 hours or so. Then goes away … not even 3k miles on my 4Runner and I'm light on the brakes. Surface rust is my guess.

I noticed the same, although I have not measured the number of hours. It seems that the first time I drive it ('19 Limited), usually in the morning to go to work, it will occur with each brake application for about the first 300-500 yds or so. This is usually in low speed conditions e.g. navigating parking garage and closely spaced traffic lights. I have about 3,800 miles and it has done it from day one. Taking for service on Saturday, will see what they say. I have had many Toyota's and this is the first vehicle that made this sound.

I have had brakes squeak over the years long ago. the caliper brake pads backing plate makes this noise.
what I do when doing the brake job , I put a small amount of anti seize on the backing plate of both pads.just a small paint like amount that is all required..
make sure the pads move easy in the caliper . I installing new pads had to file down the backing plate because the metal stamping machine was not properly setup .. pads can bind if not fabricated properly .. some had metal burrs sticking the pads.
you have 1000 miles on it well I never had this problem with my 2016 runner. but I did check out the brakes when new .. I also removed the rotors so I put anti seize on the hub .. reason I do this is when I need the rotors replaced it is a b*tch to remove them, because they are rusted/locked in place on the hub..

I've noticed this too. In some cases I can see it being a condensation thing, but other times it does not make sense. Semi-related: Is there a way to check the breaks without taking the tires off? Can't seem to find a spot for my digital caliper.

Replaced 17” OEM WHEELS AND TIRES with 20” that came with my 2015 Limited. Tire size 275/55/R20 Nittos.
Just took delivery of a 2020 TRD and am having the same problem w squeaking breaks after car sitting overnight. It does clear up after a few stops. Not really concerned as it’s been cold and rainy and I believe it’s from the moisture as it does not do it when weather is clear. Am a bit annoyed after paying in the $43,000 range. My 2015 never had a problem. I will be speaking to a tech at the dealer to see if this is a common occurrence. Hoping they’ll give me an honest answer.

Does anyone know the typical mileage or thickness when these pads should be changed ?

7k on my 2020 ORP and I've had this issue from day 1. My dealership can't find any problems with the brakes but it's definitely annoying as hell!

2020 SR5 Premium. ~1,000 miles. Mine does this too. Usually squeaks in the morning for the first 100 yards or so, then stops. My guess is it's the pads/rotors that they are using. Mine only happens initially when it's cold.

many that do not slam the brakes all day long the pads will last 75K miles..
some had to change the pads 30K miles. brake slammers will also need rotors and pads .
a few did do the pad changes over 100K miles because of operating in a back country area..
if you live in Washington DC then need pad changes 25K miles..
rotate tires then inspect the pad wear.. all should be worn the same amount ..if the pads are down to 1/8 inch or so then change them..if one pad is not the same wear as others , then this is a failure.

If I leave my Runner outside overnight when it's below around 50 deg and the humidity is up, the first few stops are sqeaky as hell. then it gets back to normal. our other cars don't do this...just figured its a quirk for the 4Runner.

Mine too...dealership found nothing, of course. I took them all apart myself, scuffed pads with scotch brite and rotor edges, cleaned everything. It lasted a day and started again, very annoying so it must be new compound in pads and/or rotors. Next time I am going to try MOC brand brake quiet that soaks into pads if I can find some...

Did you lube the metal plates between the caliper and pad?
