Too much for 74k miles?

    Hi all,

I know you probably get a lot of these threads but...I'm new to the 4Runner world. I've been shopping for a recent model 4Runner for while in my area (temporarily living in Florida) and the pickings in my budget are slim - I was aiming for about 30-33k OTD.

I see a lot 2019-2020 TRDs for about $31-35k, but they always end up being almost $40k OTD and IMO not worth it for a 5-6 year old car with 80-100k miles (this is Florida where dealer fees range from $995-$2000+)

The only one I have really found in my budget is a 2021 SR5 with roughly 75k miles, at a Genesis dealer. The dealer charges no fees so it's $34k OTD. I test drove it and it was super clean, felt new to me. Excellent maintenance records - it was bought and maintained at the Toyota dealership across the street. Locally owned and trade-in. The Genesis dealer gives a 60-day, unlimited mileage warranty.

Personally I thought it was the best deal I was gonna get, but then I came on here and every thread I see makes this sound like a ripoff for 75kish miles and I should just buy new (which would be $45k-$50k OTD for an SR5 and I'd have to go out of state. Not really in my budget).

Is this a a bit of a ripoff? Or a decent deal considering the lack of fees and dealer upsells?

And would it be necessary to do a PPI?

Any thoughts appreciated! I guess I just wanted a quick gut check before dropping that much cash on a used vehicle.

Thank you for the link! I will try Cars.com to see if there were some options I didn't see.

There are certainly some cheaper options, but most are either RWD or have accidents on the report, etc. And once you throw in the outrageous fees in Florida (most dealers charge $1500+) it ends up being the same price or more.

I think this is an OK deal. You've stated it has good maintenance records and 75K is nothing for mileage. YES, YES, YES! No matter what, ALWAYS GET A PPI!! I really don't understand why this is such a hard concept for people to grasp. It's a small amount of money to give you peace of mind on a large purchase. If the PPI checks out, I would be inclined to go for this deal. Ultimately it sounds like it checks all of your boxes, and it's close to your budget. Good luck!

Thanks! yeah, it feels like a good deal considering the market, and the dealer seems to be one of the better ones in the area.

I will ask about arranging a PPI. I don't have a local mechanic as I am relatively new to the area, and this dealer is 90 minutes away, so it might be a bit hard to arrange. Their 60-day warranty (they claim it is is GOLD CERTIFIED, but that's the dealer cert, not a Genesis or Toyota cert) does give a little peace of mind in case I find something.

Just really read that carefully. What does "Gold Certified" by an independent dealer really mean? They could put a turd in a box and call it a "Gold Certified Warranty", but in the end it's still a turd.

Agree with the pre-purchase inspection. A dealer who won't allow this is not one you want to deal with. Also, drive it on the freeway to check for vibrations at 58-65mph.

Oh I know. I don't put too much stock in them calling it certified, and I will examine the paperwork for the 60-day warranty very closely.

Thanks for the second opinions, all.

My favorite acronym to poke fun at is SAFER. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simplified_Aid_For_EVA_Rescue

The E is an acronym inside that acronym!

I prefer an alternative I read somewhere a long time ago: the Orbital Human Safety Harness (for) Interspace Travel.

Dont rule out Carmax - $199 dealer fee and you can move a car around from another dealer if you need to.
I just picked up mine a little over a week ago. 2019 NightShade Limited 4wd with 77k miles on it for 35k listed price.
I had it moved from Orlando to Greenville for $199. It was worth it IMO because any 4 Runners I found I thought I might like to look at were selling too fast.
I found this Grey Metallic Nightshade in 4WD and had to jump on it. You can reserve a car online with Carmax so it's locked in until you test drive it.

I know they have their own service center and offer a warranty. I think mine was 4 months or 4k miles, something like that. And a 10 day return policy.
Sales people get a fixed commission so theres no pressure either.

No.. I dont work for or promote Carmax for any reason other than the process is pretty painless IMO. Prices are not negotiable because they price on a national average since cars can get moved from any dealer to another.

If you like it and it was clean go for it. The price of these rigs are crazy right now. I put my 24 trdpro up for sale for 54500 got tons of hits then dealers started calling wanting it even if I didnt buy from them. I ended up just trading it in for 53k to make the process much easier than selling on the street. I paid 56k for it so I got one year of driving put 30k on it, may or may not have hit a small tree sliding down a a shelf road trailing resulting in the dreaded front bumper pop at the corner and some deep scratches. Dealer didnt bat an eye scooped it up without even trest driving it. Now I have the Land Cruiser w/465ft lbs of torque and cant beleive the get up and go this 4 cylinder has.

Why look for vibrations in that range? Does it mean there is a deeper issue?

Picked up a used Barcelona Red '23 ORP back in August. KDSS, moonroof, premium plus package, all weather mats. Original buyer got screwed and paid another $4,100 for window tint, ceramic paint protection, PPF for partial hood/fenders, etc. Total $54,700. With 4K miles on the clock and 10 months old, paid $47K.

Sounds like a solid deal. the one I mentioned in this thread was a beautiful Barcelona Red.

I ended up passing on this deal. It seemed like the best option in my current area, but coordinating a PPI and making a deal was tough since I live 90 minutes away and work long hours during the week.

Looking back at the pictures I had taken, I also noticed some odd white coloring underneath the front wheel area. It didn’t look like corrosion—probably sand, since this is Florida—but I’m not a mechanic, and I wanted an expert opinion. And they showed me the work order they did when it came in and they'd done some work on something "oil-related"

The dealer was willing to hold it a bit longer with a deposit, but as of this morning, someone else was waiting for it. I figured it might be better to save up a bit longer and and look for something with either less miles or a decent CPO instead. If I'm spending to $35k or more, some kind of Toyota warranty is worth it.

The pricing for when new 5th gen were still arriving is certainly valuable data point but now all bets are off what pricing will look like.

Cheapest new I can find in the entire country is $44k + taxes/fees in Texas. I'm hoping to wait a couple more months and snag a slightly older one for maybe $37k, $40k all in if I can make the numbers work.

44K OTD in CA means the dealer price was 40K. You are a boss.

No doubt, impressive to get a 24 for 40k if it was 4wd, I want to learn the technique on bargaining.

2wd SR5 Black Out Edition. How did I line up my ducks for that deal? I checked my Credit Report which is pretty darn good, emailed copy of Driver License for myself and my spouse
along with a copy of my current Insurance so they had whatever they needed to run the deal. I got their quote, (can't remember window sticker right now) and told them I would go $44k after a little back and forth. I told the Internet guys that when I come in to do the deal I would give them 1 hour to do the deal because I have a tendency towards being ADD.
I wasn't a dick about it.....I was in the 4Runner getting oriented to all the bells and whistles in 1 hour 5 minutes. I finance thru Toyota Financial. I came in with $25,000 cash

By the way, I saw a placard at the dealership for Toyota Auto Insurance. Switch my wife's 2018 Tesla Model 3 and the new 4Runner over and saved $1,000 a year from my old Insurance Company.
