Brake Rotors and pads

Going to need to change the rotors and pads on her soon. Nice pulsation in my seat when braking. Any particular brands for each that come highly recommended or just go OEM? TIA

 

There are multiple different rotor and caliper combinations your vehicle could have. From the picture it looks like a 2005+ limited?
This should have the larger rotor and caliper. There are two size rotors and three different calipers that you could have. It seems the Sport and Limited usually all got the 338mm big rotors.

The 319mm rotors should have a 13WG or 13WL marking on the calipers while the 338mm rotors have a 13WH marking on the calipers. Here's the rotor diameter as indicated by the markings on the calipers:
13WH- 13.3"/338mm rotor diameter
13WL- 12.6"/319mm rotor diameter
13WG- 12.6"/319mm rotor diameter

I also used these rotors on both my 4R and my Tundra and really like them for the price and performance. I got right at 150,000 miles on the stock 4R rotors but they were pretty shot. I put these on at 150,000 and still have them on today at 246,000. The pads are almost done up front and out back and i was honestly thinking about swapping the pads and rotors again around 250,000 just as preventative maintenance. When you order rotors you need to specify which size, otherwise you might not get what you need.

Its really funny that the larger rotors and calipers still take the same brake pads, i personally used these

I use Bosch just because I can Amazon them.

I've used Napa Adaptive One once on the Tundra and they were crap pulsing within 5k miles. Changed the rotors to the Bosch and was good to go until I sold.

 

I used Powestop Z23 front and back rotor and pad kits. Been happy with them and had no issues going on 8+ months.

 

My opinion the Japanese rotors that come on new 4runners from Japan probably have the best steel. For aftermarket one can read reviews - same goes for pads seeking consistent pad composition.

 

That kit from ebay looks like it has the smaller front rotor.

 

Which is why i specifically said to tell them which rotor you have so they can get you the right one. If you specify to them that you have the larger rotor they will send the larger rotor, which they have listed under the GX460 listings and current model 4R listings. Rather than make it difficult and tell the OP to order Lexus front rotors and Toyota rear rotors i simply suggested he figure out what he had before he goes and ordered anything. That is a common mistake that VERY FEW people understand until they find themselves trying to swap rotors onto a Limited, Urban Runner, or Sport that got the big rotors. There is very minimal amount of info on the innernets about it and the parts houses never get it right and of course the standard searches online dont tell you either.

 

Thanks for the info. Yes I have an 06 limited V8. From what I’ve read it should have the bigger rotors, but I haven’t necessarily verified that yet.

 

FWIW, this is from 2022, the last time I did the brakes on my ‘07 Sport. It also has the larger (338mm) front rotor.

Bought OEM brakes front and rear (list below) from Toyota’s online parts site. I've had the PowerStop Z36 kit for several years and many, many miles but couldn't pass on a full OEM set for less than the PowerStop kit.

Those might have been Black Friday discount prices, can’t remember. In any case, IMO OEM is a great choice. I recently returned from a 3400 mile road trip which included ~1000 miles of towing in mountainous terrain. Brakes were great.

 

Thanks. Definitely must’ve been a sale of some sort cause it’s about double that straight off the site. I’m sure it could be cheaper going through a dealer though as I’ve seen other parts be cheaper from a dealer than it shows in the main parts site.

Thanks again! Just a PSA for anyone thinking about getting new brakes it definitely was helpful! Along with free shipping by this dealer and their dealer discount, Toyota currently has $50 off $200 or more. Total for new rotors, pads, shim kits was $382 which is about $15-$60 less than the Powerstop kit I was looking at depending on where you get it from!

Stick with Toyota oem parts…my opinion

 

They don’t. My new TRD pads warped my new OEM Made in Japan rotors within a year (flat edge ruler showed uneven surface and 1mm run off). Replaced them with EBC GD2 and zero issues since. Performancebrakes.com also have well made rotors with guarantee against uneven wear and warping.
