Subaru is great except for their god forsaken engine designs. Their flat fours can live inside their warranty period easily but past 150k miles that cylinder scuffing starts causing some serious blow by. Especially on turbo applications.

The chart is no surprise though as I assume this is reliability within their warranty period. Not necessarily long term reliability (10+ years)

My brother picked up an Outback recently and I have to say it's a really nice car. But that engine/transmission.... I could never own one.

 

Is it CVT? Those transmissions take some getting used to ime.

 

Yes the Outback has a CVT transmission.

 

The boxer motor is the reason I refuse to buy the "GR86" or any of its predecessors.

 

I can see it, but of course remember that this is a survey of the people who *would* subscribe to Consumer Reports and covers the past 12 months of issues but including the past couple years and not just the powertrain. (I'd absolutely consider an early 5th-gen RAV4 powertrain "reliable" but there was the whole roof leak and hybrid connector corrosion issue that ding it)

But the sample size seems to be really showing here, no MB, RAM? But I guess it makes sense Infiniti and Mitsubishi wouldn't really be represented considering the recent value of the former and focus on low-end of the latter.

I'm not really keen on Subaru for fit-finish, electrical concerns with a splash of cam carrier leaks but the latter two are likely more in the mid-10's models. I haven't heard many Lineartronic CVT horror stories nor consistent engine issues beyond the Forester a couple generations ago. But I can see it serving folks reasonably well despite it.

 

Would never buy ever again a Subie - head gasket issues and they don't stand behind their products.

Very true about CR - however - Yoda is starting to drop the ball - engine recalls, TSBs on tranny's....glad I bought a 5th gen as I was going to wait for the 6th gen but

 

Not much difference in drivability between a CVT and 8-speed transmission. Those of us that opted out of a manual trans are basically driving a CVT and extolling the virtues of more, not better, gearing.

 

Which is really a shame since the chassis is great.

Once the GR86/BRZ's are old and worthless I'd love to buy one for the shell and swap in an aluminum LS with a CD009 transmission.
Since the frame is so wide to accommodate the boxer engine there is plenty of room under the hood for some 'Murican horsepuppies.

 

Reminds me my wife's expression when she drove the 2021 Subaru Ascent. LoL

Which owns much more than just Subaru. I believe FHI also owns stock in Toyota.

 

In the US they have had some interesting relationships. I know they share some parts, if you ever compare the lock chime on both it sounds like they share some electronics. But other than the FRS/GR86 seems like they keep their models almost completely separate drivetrain wise.

At one point Subaru produced Camrys in the SIA plant in Indiana.

 

What kind of list doesn’t have Mercedes-Benz? This is a BS list in my opinion. Missing Porsche, Lincoln and a bunch of other brands.

 

Also no Ram. They sell a half million trucks a year but aren’t on the list. What a joke.

Still have my 2013 Outback with around 196k miles. Started giving me oil leak and other issues recently. For 190k plus miles that's not bad at all.

 

CR is a joke. When i sold treadmills back in the day they would always rate what I would call junk as best, but when they went to buy treadmill for there gym they purchased all high quality treadmills from us.

Toyota and many other brands are still suffering from Covid employee loss. Just because others quality has dropped doesn't mean your product is now better.

They shifted from their old tradition of relying solely on trusted, established technology to embracing new innovations. This change was driven by their desire to appeal to a tech-savvy generation and to boost sales in the EU while complying with strict emissions regulations. It’s understandable that this transition comes with some challenges.

I'm sure just like us when they want to buy something they will do a broader information / reviews check and pick the best.

CR is just like JD Power, another marketing firm posing as an independent ratings service.

That said, Toyota has lost a step of late with its latest BOF platforms.
