My wife and I are upgrading from our 2008 SR5 to a 2022 SR5 this weekend. The new vehicle comes with the stock SR5 wheels, but she’s interested in switching to TRD wheels as she loves the sleek black look.

We’re considering options for tires and could use some advice. While the vehicle will remain stock for now, I may eventually add a leveling kit. Since we live in Kentucky, where snowfall is common, and plan to take it off-roading occasionally, an all-terrain (AT) tire seems ideal.

I’ve noticed that most people run 265/70/17 tires, but I’ve also seen some using 275/70/17 on stock setups without rubbing. I’d love to hear your thoughts or recommendations. We're excited to join the 5th-gen community and start this new adventure!

    Oooh look, another mod.....
    Welcome aboard Walter!

You'll get an onslaught of suggestions as to which is the best tire, stick with what works for your budget and is winter rated. I have the Falken Wildpeaks on mine and stuck with the stock size. I didn't have to go up in size. They look super aggressive, but do rub juuuuuuuust a bit. Only when reversing and turning to the right.

I also like the look of the KO3's. I hear they have great wet traction in snow also. Plus, you can turn them white lettering out. To give it a more retro look.

Post up pictures of your ride when you get a chance.

    Congrats!

Personally I would stick with 265/70s. The 275s all seem to be quite a bit heavier and costlier than 265s, for a DD I don't think the tradeoff is worth it.

A heavy tire really negatively effects the performance of these.

    My thoughts;
Other than the black look I don't see much benefit with TRD Pro wheels as they a same size as SR5 17x7. May be aftermarket wheel may give you both looks and functionality when you are spending money. I don't mind having TRD Pro wheels for free, but if you are spending money to buy TRD Pro wheels things like it not meet tire manufacturers specs to mount common bigger tires like 285/70R17 does not make sense to spend money imo. (TRD Offroad wheel is the only wheel from factory that meets the requirement) Vs if you buy aftermarket wheels everyone seems to be wide to safely mount a bigger tire. (Just a thought)

This would be the toughest choice imo and every lift I tried have pros and cons. Some are amazing offroad but not worth the price tag onroad, some are in the middle but not that comfy as stock. Etc etc.. Better to give plenty time and gather knowledge from members.

If you see snow bottom like pick tires with 3 peak mountain snow flake rating. A/Ts like Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs stand out for snow performance but will get loud with miles. Nowadays with couple Youtube videos I see BFG KO3 having excellent snow performance but the weight of the tire is not my taste. Anyways this topic also have good amount of info if you search around the forum.

Me personally 275/70R17 was something I regret and cost money to sell the tires and buy something else. I bought 275/70R17 BFG KO2. Though they didn't have any rubbing on and offroad, the Load E tire ride comfort was too rough for me. The tire shop put 40psi on them and I tried all the down to 32psi but didn't help. There's Load C in 275/70R17 that are heavier than 285/70R17. IMO postpone this until you get a lift so you can get 285/70R17 with minor plastic trimming in front.

We have Icon Rebounds in 17 x 8.5 with 0 offset and Toyo AT3's in 265/70/17's. I only had to heat and push forward a small portion of the front liners.

I like these OEM 17"x7.5" charcoal TRD offroad wheels from a 2021-22 Trail Special Edition - black metalflake with a clearcoat and very easy to keep clean :bananadance:

Welcome to the forum, Walter. My choice would be to put on the black TRD Pro wheels with Toyo A/T3’s in stock size (265/70r17) and down the road Bilstein 5100 shocks, with the front adjusted a clip or two down raising the front end up.

Don’t see them mentioned often, but my wife’s 21 Trail came with these from the factory.
Firestone Destination XT 265/70 R17 They have really good reviews, and have been great in all seasons here in Indiana.

Welcome from Wisconsin! We ran 275-70-17 Coopers, with a 8.5" zero offset wheel. There was a minor rub, full steer reverse. Inner fender adjustment got rid of the rub. Nimby told me how to adjust the inner fender, thanx Nimby!
