New 4Runner break in/road trip question?

I have about 500 miles on my 4Runner since picking it up. It’s a good mix of city & highway driving. The girlfriend and I are taking an 8 hour (one way) roadtrip to North Carolina next weekend. We were planning on taking her car, but it’s looking like cold and possible snow. That got me thinking about taking the 4Runner. Any harm in taking it on a long road trip during the break in period? I would probably have 850 miles on it by the time we left next weekend. Thanks in advance.

 

To be honest, I'd not use cruise control at the same speed for long periods of time. Like, run it at 65 for ten minutes, then 70 for ten minutes, then 75 for 10 minutes, etc. Or just don't use cruise and vary your speeds some until you hit about 1000 miles. I think this is recommended in the owners manual.

My 4runner was picked up at another dealer 200 miles away when new. I have a suspicion that they simply jumped in the truck and set the cruise at 70 and drove the 200 miles. It's now got a whine or howl sound at about 70 mph.

No way to prove that's what caused the sound, but I won't take that chance again.

 

Hey 4Runningman, Toyota’s are tougher than that, haha. Just to set your mind at ease, whatever is causing that issue it isn’t being driven 200 km at a constant speed during break in. No way, haha.

 

The manual does mention putting 1,000 miles on it of mixed driving you're not going to ruin anything at 850 close enough in my opinion...
Just curious how's it a one way are you moving or something???

 

It’s 8 hours there and 8 hours back home. So it’s quite a drive. Just a few day vacation for us.

Good to know. Yeah I have no idea what is causing the hum sound! But I had a 2018 Tacoma that had a bad howl. Traded it after two months because of the howl... took a big loss. And now the 2018 4runner is making a similar noise. Didn't start until I hit about 1000 miles. Strange.

 

You'll be fine taking the 4Runner on your trip. I bought mine off the lot and drove it 6 hours home. It has zero issues.

The manual says to not stay at a consistent speed too long for the first thousand miles, but have you looked at the RPM difference between 60, 65, and 70? It doesn't change much. I say drive it in a reasonable manner and you'll be fine.
