VOA of good quality oils

I'm not getting a 6th gen, I'm getting the GX550, so we will have one thing in common, a turbo that runs hot.
So I sent a sample of each for VOA. I will share the report here when I get it. Let's take good care of our turbos folks and rack up big miles and smiles.
Premium motor oil is cheap compared to these modern motors

Owner's manual for 2024 Taco specifies the same 0W20 as you are used to for the past 14 years. The NA motors have gone to 0W16.

Eh I share his concern. Toyota execs just toured the engine remanufacturing plant I work at. They want 200 engines a day. We already make 350 a day and we're nearly at max capacity with Ford, GM, Chrysler, Volvo and Subaru. Wild stuff to see Toyota here and hear about contracts being drawn up.

 

Soooo... you're saying that Toyota recently toured your engine remanufacturing plant and want to increase your capacity by 57% compared to the 5 automakers already maxing your capacity? That's a 285% increase over any single automaker, assuming an even spread of engine remanufacturing.

What are these remanufactured engines used for? Warranty replacements?

 

Yes we do OE replacement and aftermarket engines. Mix of short blocks, long blocks, and fully dressed engines.

We told them we can do 100 a day. We're hoping for the contract otherwise one of our competitors will get it.

That doesn't sound good at all for anyone buying a new Toyota. According to those sadistics, they are expecting a 2.5x higher engine failure rate over other manufacturers. Not what they are known for

 

I haven't received the Pennzoil report yet, but I know what it will read. Pennzoil's base oil is pretty amazing, so it doesn't need as much additives. Pennzoil is colorless like water if it wasn't for the additives, that's how pure it is. This gas to liquid thing is pretty fascinating

 

Toyota is not planning for a high warranty rate in the future. They are reacting to the issue with the tundra engine. These numbers come from dealership’s replacement times for affected engines. Not future warranty. The sky is not falling, they are just simply trying to get the customers who have bought a new Tundra taken care of as fast as possible. It will likely be a short contract. Maybe 2-4 years.

 

Compared to others, Toyota will still remain the better one, but compared to Toyota of 30 years ago, that's a different story

 

Does anyone remember how bad of a start the gx460 had? I think the 3.4 will be fine,

I see GX460’s everywhere. I view them as the V8 4runner with Lexus badges and all the amenities you’d want

 

GX motor had some problems in the early years as far as I remember.

 

I was right. GX470 did have a rough start but Lexus sorted things out.

470? Oh you’re going way back. The 460’s are relatively new I’m more familiar with those.

Regardless what’s nice about Toyota is they are taking initiative and taking care of their customers. Unlike Ford’s Bronco which started dropping valves and an investigation was launched before they finally did something about it.

I’m sure the GX550 will be great. They also look sweet!

Are you saying that the Tundra engines are going to be replaced with remanufactured engines instead of new ones? Do the owners of the trucks know this?

 

This is how most manufacturers do it. Especially when you account for closed production lines for older engines. Or there is simply a higher warranty rate than the manufacturer anticipated.

Im sure Toyota wants to keep their stuff in house as much as possible, and they will replace as many as they can with Toyota new engines. But they can only do this so fast… as they’ll need to keep new Tundra’s coming. So a remanufacturer will likely be helping until all affected engines are replaced.

So to answer your question more directly. No, not every one will be remanned.

Personally I trust our engines more than I trust an engine directly from most manufacturers.

We constantly are fead supply of new blocks, heads, cranks to supplement our plant when we’re low on core for whatever reason. We measure, test, and clean before assembly. Very often, we find problems and have to send these “new, ready for assembly” parts back to the manufacturer and tell them they cannot even hold their own specifications.
