My buddy flew into town and got a Grand Wagoneer for a rental.
That thing was so nice. I made him drive me all around town like he was my chauffer.

Was comfy af. Ride was amazing. Interior looks amazing. I was pleasantly shocked Jeep was capable of such a vehicle.

I agree, especially from the rear it's a very unoffensive look that reminds of a grand-grand-Highlander.

I would have given it a look if it had a gas only option once the engine fiasco is sorted out. But given the GX550 exists and it offers a gas only option, and starts at only 2k more than the Sequoia, the choice is clear at least for me.

Their mistake was thinking people would pay Mercedes money for a Jeep branded SUV that will cost as much as a mercedes to maintain.

Also kind of related, the new Hurricane motors, at least in the Rams, don't have an oil dipstick anymore.

Yah I looked up the price and saw it was around $100k. At that price, pretty much a rich person's vehicle that has a driver.

No dipstick? So now you have to rely on a sensor to check the oil?

Yep. sensor only for oil level. It's bad enough that so many modern vehicles including Toyotas don't have a transmission dipstick anymore.

edit: apparently same for Wagoneers too

They're pretty much giving them away now, one of the car blogs I follow did a story on how some dealers have these sitting on their lots with 30k plus discounts.

That;s still about 30k too much for me to take a gamble with a newer Stellantis product.

The only products they make I would trust are the JL wranglers with the NA 3.6 V6, the 3.6 300, and....that's about it.

It would be a dream come true to see prices across the entire industry get slashed. But yah, it's a pipe dream.

Here some Grand Wagoneers for sale near me. Insane prices.

Yeah. I really love Jeeps, but just could not see myself buying any Stellantis product. I also think the wagoneers had a beautiful interior, but is very awkward looking, I would just buy a Denali with that kind of money.

I rarely see a wagoneer let alone a grand wagoneer or new style Sequoia on the roads. Is anyone buying them? I probably see more cyber trucks than either of them.

Dumpster fire. That shelf will probably break the first type you put a heavy suitcase or cooler on it. Imagine trying to load a piece of furniture or something in there. They completely killed the utility part of SUV.

There are a few new Sequoias in my area but not many. Random observation, the handful I've seen in my area have all been driven by Indian families. We have many well-to-do Indian families in this area, lots of doctors and business owners. Seen two Wagoneers in my area.

In my area a 100 or 200 series Land Cruiser is 9/10 driven by people of Indian extraction who bought them new. I am not surprised they are a large contingent of the Sequoia buyers.

Not sure why you guys expect to see a ton of Sequoia's around all the sudden.

They've always been a low volume vehicle for Toyota.

The last year of the previous gen (2022) sold 5,000 total units in the US. lol

New gen sales have quadrupled that figure for both 2023 and 2024.

Toyota sold less Sequoia as they went up market, in 2021-2022 the last of the units around me were all 60-70k units. You may recall there were some "minor" hiccups with automotive stuff and the economy in general around 2020-2022 but perhaps your preferred news sources didn't cover it.

In the early 2000s they were selling a lot of them.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Sequoia#Sales

    Calendar year US Canada
    2000 9,925[27] n/a
    2001 68,574[27] n/a
    2002 70,187[28] n/a
    2003 67,067[28] n/a
    2004 58,114[29] 562[30]
    2005 45,904[29] 477[30]

Around my area first gen models are still everywhere.

2009 and onward sales slumped to around 12,000 per year.

They haven't been selling a lot of them for a long time.

2023 and 2024 they sold 20,000 per year.

Sounds like people like the newer one better despite the higher price tag.

they should sell more since each time they introduced a new gen(2000-2001, 2006-2007) they were selling over far more than 20k a year. Soccer moms love new looking things but get tired of it after a while in this case 16 years on the 2nd gen.

Oh and don't forget about the recall that covers all 23-24 Sequoias, that's gonna do wonders for next year's sales I'm sure.

yeah, if only 20k or so a year of soccer moms put down the money for the first new Sequoia in 16 years, it's bad.

Meanwhile, Chevy sold 110k Tahoes last year. Why does Toyota even bother with this segment?

And you're right, now that I think about it I rarely see second gens either. The first gen is relatively common though.

Saw one in person and sat in it at the LA Auto Show. Seems tight in there now vs the 5th gen. The LC had more interior space and just an overall better interior.

As long as they turn a profit and don’t cannibalize other sales or production capacity (opportunity cost) to a degree deemed unacceptable, I don’t see much trouble staying in segments that aren’t high volume sellers especially since my impression was that the new Sequoia was pretty much made from whatever Toyota North America found in the couch cushions.

Honda’s Ridgeline isn’t a hot seller in the pickup market but it’s around strategically for those who own both an Honda and a pickup to consider and it does have its niche in the market.

If you haven't been in any of their vehicles you might be surprised, all of Ram / Dodge higher end stuff is like that since 2013. The 2013 Ram 1500-3500 interior update put them years ahead of the game. Honestly this interior update put them ahead of everyone till about 2020 when Ford finally got a nicer dash. It took GM till 2023 to get an interior as nice as the 2013 Ram.
This same interior the trucks got spilled over to the Jeep line and they got a "nice" interior like 2016ish but still not quite as nice and finished as the Laramie and Longhorn and Limited trucks. You gotta get a super high trim Jeep to get the same caliber the Laramie truck had in the 2013 update.
The 2018+ Ram 1500 interior update with the big screen pretty much set the bar on how nice an interior should be. All the Laramie, Longhorn, Limited have practically the same interior, all soft touch stuff, nice display, ect ect.
The current model Durango has the same caliber of interior as the 2013+ Ram 1500-3500
The current model Jeep Grand Cherokee has the same caliber of interior as the 2018+ Ram 1500 and 2019+ 2500-3500
The current model Wagoneer has the same caliber of interior as the 2013+ Ram 1500-3500
The current model Jeep Grand Wagoneer has the same caliber of interior as the 2019+ Ram 1500-3500

The current model Jeep Grand Wagoneer is a $95,000 to $110,000 vehicle, they are priced to compete with the Escalade and Denali lines. My personal opinion is that they are nice, plush, big, but far too expensive for my tastes.

The 2014 Ram 3500 Laramie that stickered for $63,000 i bought new for $53,000 and now stickers at $98,000 today.
The 2017 Ram 2500 Limited that stickered for $73,000 i bought new for $62,500 and now stickers for $93,000 today.
The 2008 Tacoma TRD Sport double cab that stickered for $30,500 i bought new for $28,000 and now stickers for $53,500 today.
Prices are getting out of hand.

    Speaking of bigger vehicles ...

WA State, Jan 1, manufacturers will be restricted from selling gas- or diesel-powered vehicles over 8,500 pounds unless they first meet the ZEV sales targets.

Applies to vehicles with more than 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight, impacting most RVs, medium- to heavy-duty trucks and interstate tractor-trailers.

Manufacturers will be restricted from selling gas- or diesel-powered vehicles over 8,500 pounds unless they first meet the ZEV sales targets.

If you buy new out of State, WA will would allow that vehicle to be registered as a used vehicle after it has crossed the 7,500-mile threshold.

Looks like Montana is about to sell a whole lot more registrations. All it takes is the yearly fee for renting a post office box and some paper work.
