I wonder what imported vehicle buyers are going to do if and when the supposed tariffs start becoming enforced. Vehicles like the Mexico Tacomas are already over-priced as it is. And what about the 4RUNNERS.

You can bet Toyota isn’t just going to eat the cost of those tariffs. They will be passed on to Tacoma and 4RUNNER buyers.

And what about vehicles that arrive in the country or are already setting on dealer’s lots before the tariffs kick in? Are they going to be “grandfathered in” and have tariffs added to them as well? (They shouldn’t be, but what to you wanna bet they will be?)

Who is going to be able to afford these over-priced vehicles with tariff costs being passed on to the American consumer on top of that?

They can’t impose tariffs on vehicles already on the ground. Until tariffs are signed into law, these are just empty promises, threats, or negotiation tactics. The EU has been charging a 10% tariff on American cars for years, and nothing has changed. Overpriced vehicles? Think again! Car prices in the USA are among the lowest globally. If prices go up, it’s time to focus on increasing your income.

How much have 4Runner prices increased since 2019? People still pay over MSRP for them some way or other.

At this point the US made Ranger is a better truck than the 4th gen taco anyway. Toyota is the only midsize maker that does not make the trucks in the US.

the 2.3 EcoBoost has been a solid motor with very little issues, I would give it a serious look.

Plenty of speculation, I’ve stocked up on some near-future consumables and bumped up a couple purchases but as far as vehicles are concerned, there’s nothing to stop dealers from taking advantage with their own markup if a solid chunk of vehicles - even competitors - are tariffed.

There’s a lot of bluster, some potentially “illegal” or contradicting existing law so ultimately we will have to see what happens as many interests would not want to set off a trade war.

Pretty sure i read the tariffs are on TRUCKS. TRUCKS coming into the US.
I am sure there will be some sort of a "ping" on the small cars and 4R and other things shipped in from Japan but i was pretty confident the whole tariff thing was on the trucks. This was to keep people like Toyota and GM and Ford from making their best selling models out of the country. This was an incentive to get them to make plants in the US or face a hefty fee for producing them elsewhere.

The middle working class will get by just fine with 28k Camry made in Kentucky or a 29k Rav4 made in Canada, no tariff in sight.

If people struggling to pay bills are over-extending themselves to buy 45-70k trucks and SUVs to commute and drive the kids to school, that's up to them to make it work.

The Fed has cut the interbank rate a couple of times but mortgage rates have actually gone up since. They are tied more to 10-year treasury yields.

The threat of tariffs is the means to get Mexico to step-up with regards to border......which they will. The president of Mexico is already kissing the ring.

Not if demand shoots up farther past supply and the dealer marks up US-made models to match. The factories here will have the exact same capacity they had prior to the election and take the same amount of inputs per vehicle, which might also be imported.

Thankfully 4Runner and Tacoma prices have stayed so steady last 4 years thanks to lack of tariffs and dealers have been so cool about not charging markups. Whew.

Sellers can ask whatever price they wish. If the sellers can’t afford to accept an offer their investment sits idle waiting for a buyer that can pay or they lower the profitability of imported cars.
Buyers can offer whatever price they want. If no one will accept the offer the buyer will have to increase the offer or buy something else, the intent being buy American. Neither side is obligated to accommodate the other.

Maybe the big 3 can start building quality stuff that people want to buy. Seems like the issue would solve itself.

That’s the biggest goal of these tariffs, get Americans to buy American again, and stop the illegal stuff from coming in.

I'm not sure how that works if American cars aren't necessarily made in America.
