Well, I'll be dipped...

Apologies for the click bait title. I couldn't resist.

TLDR: I wanted to do a thing but couldn't because I hallucinate. I went to do another thing and realized I could expertly do the first thing I wanted to do. Win-win. All the things were done.

This may have been covered many times before, but a quick and lazy search didn't show anything.

This weekend I was installing a new headunit I had gotten from Trail Grid Pro. Without looking at the interior of my Runner I ordered their HDMI/USB outlet deal. In my defense, I don't drive the thing very much and the mental image I had of the interior wasn't even close.

Anyway, the thing arrived, and I was all pleased with myself that I was going to add this OEM look thing. Got inside the truck and looked down. My self-worth immediately hit the crapper. Hmmm. Not going in the center console. There are a few blanks on the other side of the steering wheel, which would be super-inconvenient. I was more worried about the other crap I had to do for the install (cameras, BT mic, etc). I would cross the outlet-bridge when I came to it.

I've gotten my wiring up to the passenger front. In Toyota's wisdom, the side of the dash that faces the door panel does not remove. You know, like most vehicles I've worked on do? I'll just pull the glovebox. No big deal, and it might make it much easier to run the wiring to the headunit.

The glovebox is right in my teeth as I'm taking out bolts and it was in that moment I notice something. The glove box has blanks for a Toyota-sized switch or something, AND a plug for a cigarette-light style plug. Well, I know what I can use one of them for.

So now I have an HDMI port and USB port in my glovebox. I used the one in the glovebox for the fruits and robots implementation. The headunit has wireless versions of both, so I don't think that plug will get used much. Actually, not sure the other will either, but I like to be prepared to watch the latest Hollywood feature while rolling down the highway approaching triple-digit speeds. And I made the one in the center console a charging port. The TPG version fits perfectly and looks factory.

Back to being pleased with myself.

Your post was too long, so I didn't read it, but I wanted to congratulate you and say, you must be very proud.

 

Well then. I only ever had one sticker. It was "Going to Town Rig" that was placed on my beater commuter car. I do, however, have a collection of t-shirts from both channels that were bought in an effort to win one of the many car giveaways. Speaking of which, I should probably get something for the "Yenko" Nova giveaway.
