You have the choice to use your 2 free oil changes whenever you want. I did the first one at I think 800 miles and the second at 5000 miles. And then I was done with my dealer, never visited them again lol

Environmental regulations. They started counting oil changes toward emissions, calling it total CO2-equivalent life-cycle emissions.

They changed recommended oil interval for the same reason they put useless start and stop tech in most new cars - to get marginally better score toward the target goal. Get read of EPA regulations and the manual will go back to 5K or less recommendations.

I linked before to Toyota manuals from various other countries that still show 5K change interval. These don't have EPA-like regulations, so Toyota is still recommending shorter change intervals there.

Took my '24 4Runner in this morning for it's first service and requested an oil change and tire rotation and got some 'tude from the service guy, saying it wasn't necessary and needed to be done every 10K miles. I told him I was paying for this service and wanted it done since I would be traveling in December. Went back and forth a bit and I asked the guy, "Are we gonna have a problem this morning?" He walked over to the car porter and gave him instructions, then came back with a better attitude. I told him that once those free services are finished, they're going to recommend 5K oil changes anyway so let's get with the program.

If this is what I'm going to get from Toyota, my local mechanic is going to be seeing my vehicle for the in-between services. I don't need 'tude on a Monday morning. Shit can quickly get ugly.

I took mine in for my 5k service on Friday and almost got the oil change as well but I'm just going to ride it out a little longer and schedule my 10k service around 8k and then do oil changes every 5 after that.

It is funny though that the 5k mark on the vehicle still says "oil maintenance required".

Or even better do it yourself if you can ....

Good point on the filter.... Which is very important to be changed especially the first oil change.....
Always check the dipstick before you take your car... Do not trust anyone but yourself...

one thing about the 4Runner oil change, it needs time and patience to do it right.
not over torquing the canister, not stripping the skid bolts, not overfilling, using the right oil, filter, etc...

Save yourself some money and headaches and never go to the dealer for anything but warranty work.

Duly noted. $101 for an oil change and tire rotation that my regular mechanic could have done for $75-80 and is right around the corner from my house so I can literally walk for 60 seconds to get there.

That sounds much easier and less stress. Mine is a block from where I work, so same story - drop it off and walk, and walk over to pick it up when done. To be honest, though, I've removed the skid plate prior to the service, just because...I figure they would appreciate it, and it's much easier to check under there afterwards.
