Thank you. What's funny is last night I went to town reading the owner's manual and came across this. (I just picked up the truck Tuesday night) Ideally I was hoping to display all 5 like in the picture from the owners manual but honestly as long as I can see the spare when I rotate it in or swap it that would be fine. Thanks.

You can have full time monitoring of the air pressure in your spare tire by installing a TPMS sensor the spare tire wheel. Your dealer (I used my independent shop) will need to program the computer to read the sensor in that wheel. I did this on my '21 TRD Pro. Works great.

If you install a TPMS sensor in your spare tire, your TRD Pro has the capability of reading that spare tire sensor all the time. The dash display as programmed from the factory will only display the 4 tires on the ground and not the spare. The capability to read the pressure of the spare is there; it just needs to be activated by a dealer or independent shop with the necessary computer as my indy did.

almost everyone at the dealership today told me it couldn’t be done but they also know almost nothing about the 4R and a few didn’t even know the rear window rolled down which I was shocked (But that’s a story for a different thread).
After “arguing” with 5 techs I asked them to bring whoever had the most knowledge on 4Runners. They got me someone who definitely knew more than everyone else. He didn’t know that the spare tire could be added on the dashboard if it wasn’t there to begin with but after I explained him what to do he said that it shouldn’t be a problem since they have the tool to access the car settings. He was able to do it without issue.
They charged me $75 and they learned something new.

Can you give me the dealership and the tech's name? I'll be in Arizona in about a month and would much rather just go to the same guy who knows it can be done and how to do it rather than try to do the jobs of the techs around here. Thanks.

Big two Toyota of Chandler, AZ

I ve talked to so many techs that I don’t remember their names.
The sale associate who set up my appointment (Jose) is absolutely terrible and I would stay as far as possible from him.
On the picture below there’s the name of the tech who actually did the work so I would ask for him while making the appointment as he should know what to do.
Like I said previously, I absolutely did everything for them and even provided them with the ID# for the sensor in the spare (they should be able to tell but you never know).

I see that you have an ORP. I don’t know if it’s possible to reprogram it for sure but they should be able to tell once they connect the computer to the 4R. I knew that it was possible for the TRD pro based on this forum and a friend who had brought it to a Toyota dealer to do the same thing before me.

Awesome, thank you very much. I'll reach out to them and see if it's possible to do on my ORP.

You don't need the dealer for this. Buy the TPMS sensor and have it installed in the spare. Your independent mechanic can program the system to read the 5th sensor. My mechanic used his Snap On diagnostic tool to program my truck to read the sensor in the spare. I bought this Toyota TPMS sensor on eBay:
    Part Number 42607-48010

    Works great.

Thanks. I already have the TPMS sensor in the spare and it's ready to go. The problem is getting someone who's never done it before on board with idea it's possible. I'd rather just save myself the grief and go to someone who's already done it and knows it is possible instead of constantly being told it will only read 4 at a time. I'll be in the Phoenix area in Feburary anyway so it makes is super easy.

My mechanic didn't know my truck had that capability either. But (unlike the dealer and their bureaucracy) he was willing to plug in his programmer and find the spot in the menu where the fifth sensor reader can be turned on. I watched him do it; took two minutes. It's in the same menu where they would go to get the vehicle to recognize a new TPMS sensor.

Nice, good to know. If didn't already have plans to be in Phoenix anyway I'd go this route and find someone local. But I've already called and request an appoitment with the tech shown on the WO above so it will be painless.

Sorry for the late follow up, but can confirm 100% that the ORP can be programmed to do 5 wheel display.

Doubtful, the tech at the dealership has to go in and activate the 5th senor reading with their scan tool. There's no way for you to do it in the infotainment/dash. The computer can read 5 and it's setup by default like that on the Limiteds but everyone else needs to activate it in order to get the reading.

    Excellent info, guys!
It sounds like the spare has to be rotated into the mix of 4 tires so it's on the ground to be recognized, is that correct? If so, can it be done with the tire just sitting in the upright position on the ground leaning against the rear bumper?
Also, will Carista allow the spare tire sensor to be added, or can it only be done with the dealer's more advanced computer scan tool?

Bumping this old thread... Just found out my extra 5th wheel doesn't have a TPMS sensor and I'll have to buy one. Which is the official part number I should go with? I found this info in another thread on this forum:
"42607-48010 - Old style "big" sensor with metal valve stem
42607-53020 - New style "small" sensor with metal valve stem
42607-02050 - New style "small" sensor with rubber valve stem"

All of my stems are rubber (unless they are metal under the rubber that I can't see?). I'm assuming the 42607-02050 is the correct part number.

Also, is $75 the going rate to have this programmed at the dealer? I would like to get the monitoring on my truck for the 5th wheel.

The metal is on the outside so you can see it if you have it. When I did this for my 2020, the top part number was for the OEM off road wheels, and the bottom part number was for the Pro wheels. Not sure about the middle part number. If you have the OEM wheels typical for your 2024, you can plug your VIN into one of the dealer online parts sites and it will tell you the part number you need. I recently paid $90 to have it programmed at a dealer.

Thanks... It appear 75-90 is the rate based on previous searches. I do think it's worth doing for that price to have all 5 wheels show up.
