Now that the 5th Gen is out of production and new inventory is running out, I read about skyrocketing values in the used T4R market. Is this true? If so, I wonder if values are going to keep going up for a while before the 6th Gen comes out and their prices stabilize? Curious what you all are seeing/hearing? Thanks!

My completely unprofessional opinion is that value will hold steady or depreciation will continue slowly for now and when 6th gens show up the continued rate will depend on their pricing.

Some will point to the possibility of X or Y issue or Toyota being washed up but I'm betting the general buying public won't have much concern other than how much markup dealers try to pull and how long the waiting list is.

I think that the value of the 2024's will depend on the popularity of the 2025's. It could go up or down.

You can count on used values to remain at the very top tier of all vehicles overall, but looking at Gen3 Tacoma residuals in 2024 might be a good point of reference for what Gen5 4R’s will do in 2025.

Gen3 Taco values went up when Gen4 deliveries were initially delayed due to scarcity, and seem to be stabilizing now, with discounts being offered on the new ones.

most people absolutely do not want the new gen 4 Tacoma because it’s overpriced they have transmission and build quality issues don’t have a bump stop anymore and they’re way overpriced

I paid 42-43K for my SR5P (without sunroof) in January '24. I have about 12,600 mostly highway miles on it now. I just got an online buy offer from Carmax for 44K. They do not even know that I put TRD Pro wheels and better tires on the vehicle.

Any thoughts on how used Gen 5 values are unfolding, particulary 2024s?

    Bruh… it doesn’t skyrocket. It’s not a Porsche carrera GT. ;)

bought my ‘23 ORP for $46k in December 2023. Traded in September 2024 w/ 4000miles on odo for $46k.

If you have a short term mindset with the car. Stop adding upgrades to it. Upgrades will not increase the value of the car.

The price of my 4Runner doubles in value, every single time I slide into the drivers seat and drive it. When I get, the value plummets once again.

Store it for about 2 years and see. You'll either make a fortune of lose your ass on it.

Sold for 18.5k. It’s nice that these things have good resale value. But this example at 14 years old and 222,000 miles is a car well past it’s mid-life, for half-price of new. It’s not magically reliable just because it’s a toyota…it will continually need something fixed for the rest of it’s life. So you don’t even get the benefit if hassle-free ownership for a few year for all that money. That’s assuming the rust work they did on it wasn’t a cover up job.

Geez… used cars in general have been such a horrible value for at least the last 10-15 years. Especially considering how long most people need to work to save 18k. I know I can’t save an extra 18k any easier now than I could 10 years ago.

Saw something in a video somewhere that said these used prices have been getting propped up by the likes of Carmax and other dealers that can give out credit freely. See a car you like? Just get whatever because they finance it for you. Seems convenient…and then they get to repo the car when the customer defaults, and they get to resell it again. Or if you can make payments, when it turns into a unreliable turd and you still owe half the purchase price to carmax, bring it to them and they’ll roll over the debt so you can get into another car for another year or two. Rinse and repeat. It’s a great way to get debt slaves…I mean”customers” for life.

(Pardon the “Old man yelling at clouds” rant lol))

just look around online, you can see that prices are crazy . I just bought a 2018, so I'm a little sensitive on the subject lol! search 4Runners on Carmax to get a good range all on one page. 4Runners historically hold value but it seems to apply to other vehicles as well.

I am patiently waiting for the media craze for the 6th to start so I can snag a 3-4 year old one from a soccer mom who trades up for the newest model for a long travel build. Come on Toyota, get those new shiny toys going dang it.

I just got an unsolicited email from Carmax with an updated buy offer. Going up.
Increased $3000 from a few weeks ago to $46,600.
This is for a 2024 SR5P with no moonroof and no third row seat. 13,500 miles.

I think once the 6th gen’s arrive there will be an initial flurry of 5th gen owners that trade in for the latest and greatest gotta have it thing. If that floods the market then prices will drop. I hope I can pick up a barely used 24 towards the end of next year.

I did the same. I was going to mention to the guy that for that price, you can get a BRAND new 2024 Limited or you can get a BRAND new 2024 SR5P for about $46k

That’s a hilarious post. Worth to follow. 11,000 miles and a few dings from highway travel. :D Maybe he throws in a small handbag with $15k cash in the trunk.
