A lot of people will have opinions on this. My first oil change on my new 2022 was at 1000 miles (i did it) and then 5000 going fwd. i dont agree going to 10000 before changing. Hell changing at 3000 would be better than 10000

i agree. Id also recommend learning how to change your own oil. Too many horror stories with dealership oil changes

The filter is catching any larger metal pieces. Anything smaller isn’t going to harm an engine. It’s completely normal. The majority of people do not do an early oil change and their engines aren’t seizing.

Your 4runner or any other vehicle absolutely do not require a ridiculous oil change at some early interval. Not one manufacturer recommends this and your Toyota engine will go at least 500k with 10k oci with synthetic.

was your 2016 new when you bought it and if yes, when did you do your first oil change. Be honest now….

also i wasnt talking about changing your oil every 3000. I was only referencing the 1st oil change.

When you bought it used, did you change out the oil and font/rear diffs when you got it home for peace of mind and start things “new”?

I'm creeping up to 3800 miles or so. Thanks for the heads-up that Toyota DOES NOT do the oil change at 5K. I'm going to have them change mine since I tow (only once since purchased in August.) NO big deal if I have to pay so long as they do everything else they're supposed to. Just checked my oil levels the other day and all is well.

Should do it at 5K regardless of towing. 2010, 2011 owners manuals call for 5K change interval. The engine has not changed.

That's the plan. I noticed in the 5K service they do mention getting an oil change if towing.

I said I would pay for the oil change. But then they agreed to make it one of my free changes.

I paid dealer to change oil & filter at 1,500 miles.
I gave them a wide mouth clear quart container and asked for first catch oil out drain plug and to save the filter element. Oil was black. Filter had shinny flecks in it.
I let it sit on garage shelf for a few months, then poured into collection jug for disposal. I was shocked at the black grit in the bottom of the container.
Glad I changed it when I did.

Despite their protests and confusion, I made them do it at 3K. They just used up one of the two oil changes included in the free two year maintenance thing. After the next free one, I’ll switch to doing it myself like I do with all my cars.

If you’re paying them to do it, make sure they are actually changing your filter. Because it’s kind of a pain to remove, I’ve heard of some dealer techs skipping it.

    Agreed..

    I do mine around 5-6K

The thing is the manual states 5K for short trips and towing. and to think about it 90% of people would fall here...
Unless you drive 200miles on highway daily...

Most experts that work on these engines like the car care nut and others have stated the same.

And yet, people still argue the 10K change...

I think fuel dilution is the main culprit here. If nothing seeps to oil, then 10K would be ok....but that is not the case with any engine.

I am even considering of changing the oil/filter at 6K and oil only at 3K in between due to that.

it is your money, do as you wish....

It’s the MINIMUM needed to keep warranty. Personally, I changed at break in at 1000 and then every 5000. If you don’t plan to keep your 4R long or is a lease then stick with minimum. Even Car Care Nut who’s a master certified Toyota/lexus mechanic recommends 5000 intervals. Oil changes are cheap insurance and probably the number one thing to ensure it will run well a long time.

Toyota said a lot of people chose to do different intervals. I paid this one but the Toyota care will cover the next one.

Do you have any examples of engines that actually failed due to 10K oil changes?

The Toyota (doesn't really) care can be risky depending on the dealer service department. I skipped all those personally.

    The 2012 and forward call for 10K. 2010, 2011 call for 5K.

No. Drain and fill. Toilets get flushed, not transmissions.

Nawh. Thats only if the fluid hasnt been flushed in the recommended 100-150k miles. Flush early and often and there is no issue.

Not on 1GR-FE, plenty of 2AR-FE and 2GR-FE. Manifests as a cold-start "death rattle" caused by a stuck pin in the VVTi cam gear from degraded oil. This was more or less fixed by 2013.

1GR-FE can go 98k without oil changes before dying from oil sludging. There's thread on TW about a Tundra that did that.

I don't think it's doing VW owners any favors. Just ask my neighbors.
