Add Auto-Stop-Start to 5th Gen?

Hello friends.

Recently I read that the 6th Gen 4Runner will have auto stop-start. Is there anyway to add this modern eco-friendly feature to my 5th Gen? I’ve tried turning the motor off with the start-stop button at stop lights, but it’s such a chore to shift into park or neutral to restart the motor and then back into drive.

Any thoughts?

 

I wouldn't want to put a regular starter through that.

I turn that crap off anytime I drive a vehicle with it.

I think there was a study shown that it doesn't do much of anything unless you have long, constant idle times.

 

Correct. It doesn't do much except put additional wear on your engine and wear out your starter incredibly fast.

5th Gen is old tech. If you want new tech, buy another new car.

 

Don't bother.

Fuel savings are minimal (takes several seconds on average before you save) and for a vehicle not designed for that functionality, it's just extra work for the starter and battery. Vehicles with stop/start often (but implementations vary) have other means to mitigate the engine being off ranging from smarter HVAC design, monitoring brake pedal pressure, waiting for engine to reach temp before enabling itself, monitoring battery voltage and voltage drop (and disabling if battery is below certain threshold), etc. It's a lot of different things cooperating that you can't retrofit a vehicle with.

Stop/start really helps with emissions with a number of vehicles in close quarters like a city intersection and with fuel savings as a teeny bonus.

If the system is designed well, I find it mostly unobtrusive. (rental Soul sucked, but a rental Corolla Cross did well - a hybrid would be even better)

But mimicking it in a vehicle not designed for it is a penny-wise, pound-foolish exercise.

 

Like the idle times waiting in the drive-thru at In-n-Out Burger?

I think it would also be useful when I’m driving through the ocean of Priuses in the Trader Joe’s parking lot, with their drivers all giving me the side eye because of my high profile gas guzzler. But if I could have auto stop start then I could be all virtue-signally too!

 

Can’t imagine anyone wanting that on their vehicle.

 

I thought it would be obvious that this was a gag, but I guess I failed to read the room properly.

When I was shopping for a car it came down to the 4Runner and the Rubicon. The lack of an auto stop start is what tipped the scale in the 4Runner’s favor.

 

Dude it was hilarious. But text doesn't translate well and you did a good job selling it.

I particularly enjoyed the mother earth comment.

 

Unlike the 4Runner, the Rubicon is a lot more customizable through Tazer. You can disable auto start-stop, recalibrate speedometer for larger tires, enable paddle shifters... all with less effort than disabling the sodding seatbelt chime on the 4Runner.

I won’t buy a cat if it has that. The savings are complete BS. The battery and starter costs twice as much in those cars.

 

I won't buy one either. When does the vast majority of bearing wear occur on an engine? STARTING!

 

I had it in the Ranger and god damn I hated it…

 

Auto start/stop is the devil! Rented a few cars with it and it drove me crazy! If I wasn't traveling alone, the passenger was in charge of turning it off when the car was started.

I have it in my Audi. It's the smoothest I've felt and pretty well implemented, but I bought a module that remembers the state it was left in, so it's off permanently now. Serenity now!

 

Most people who have vehicles with this find a way to turn it off

 

If this is plea for help, we are there for you. Just let us know. Otherwise...

a) You are crazy, it is worst design for EPA testing feature that does nothing in real world.

b) It isn't easy, as restart in start-and-stop isn't full start cycle but 'resume'. You'd have to retrofit entire new ignition system, new ECU, and a new starter.

Well I did have another question in mind. I know Raptor lights are widely considered déclassé and verboten, (did you see I worked French and German into the same sentence? So international!), but I had this idea about chase lights mounted in the fake vent in the hood bulge. Like K.I.T.T. In Knightrider.

I drove a Honda Pilot once and the start-stop feature made me want to drive it straight into a light pole at 45mph so it would never start again.

 

This I could go for.
